Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 9/19/12

WHAT MATTERS:
  • CBS opened its 2012-13 season with the 90-minute 25th season premiere of Survivor, which finished up a tick from the most recent premiere (spring 2012) but down 6% from the year-ago fall premiere. Pretty much as expected. Then came the Big Brother finale, which was down 14% from last year's similarly post-Survivor finale. That's actually an above-average year-to-year result in what was a generally -20%ish BB season. (It was also the best Wednesday number all season.)
  • Fox got the best of the second Wednesday of reality war as The X Factor joined The Voice in having a surprisingly positive week two. (Though it didn't grow quite as much as The Voice, only two ticks after finals.) In the preliminaries, X and Survivor actually tied in the 8:00 hour (2.9 at 8:00, 3.2 at 8:30), but X pulled way ahead in the 9:00 half-hour (3.9 to 3.3) and then benefited from having a high-rated 9:30 half-hour (4.1).
  • Elsewhere, the tune-up for the fall continues as Modern Family had its best repeat of the summer and NBC got pretty good repeat results from The Voice, Law and Order: SVU and Revolution.

The X factor is not having positive week two, it's only having less disastrous week than first one was. The show is 20% down from (already underwhelming) Season 1, if trend continues it will average around 3.0 for the season. Supposed to be hit, but could be on-the-bubble show already in Season 2.
Similar, The Voice is having OK week after having bad first week.

Sure, but I was referring to positive more relative to week one than to the preseason expectations. Relative to my own preseason expectations, I'd say The Voice is not that far off. X still certainly well below.

I get it now, you meant more like week to week.
Then for me it's like X-Factor week 1 grade 'F', week 2 'D'. And The Voice week 1 'D-', now 'C'. I think we can agree on it.

I went way ahead to season predictions. Which so far I have The Voice at 4.0 average best case. Sure renewal, but 2013-2014 could be shaky. Not kidding, reason: if they stick with 2 cycles a year, by spring 2014 show will accumulate 4 more seasons, it'll have wear and tear of a 6 years veteran.

TXF at 3.0, renewal after budget cuts, might be in real trouble during 2013-14.

I have to wonder what's going on right now at FOX TV HQ. They poured a hell of a lot of money into this show, and it's only doing about half as well as they must have thought. Mondays look shot. Tuesdays like they will be a struggle. Fridays are a dumping ground. Sundays are solid, but weakening. No real successful dramas to speak of. This can't last.
