Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/27/20

FINALS UPDATE: The Neighborhood (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC's The Voice (0.9) became the latest of the music competition franchises to go into clip show mode, and it dragged Songland (0.6) down by multiple tenths along with it. That put Fox's steady 9-1-1 (1.2) back on top, and the 9/8c finale of Prodigal Son (0.7) also matched last week.
  • On ABC, The Baker and the Beauty made it three weeks in a row at 0.5, and The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart (0.6) was also even. And the CW's Roswell, New Mexico finally returned to 0.2 after a month of 0.1's.

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 4/26/20

FINALS UPDATE: NCIS: Los Angeles (0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • American Idol (1.0) returned, live-but-socially-distant, and improved on last week's recap special rating but was down from the show's last true original three weeks ago. It didn't have as much help as usual in the 7/6c hour as ABC tried an encore of the smash The Disney Family Singalong (0.6). The Rookie (0.7) returned from a week off and grew a tenth at 10/9c.
  • CBS said goodbye to God Friended Me with a two-hour finale (0.6/0.5). NBC Sunday got even uglier than usual with Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and Good Girls both crashing to new low 0.3's. The CW's Batwoman (0.2) returned, but Supergirl (0.1) remained in repeats. The Fox cartoons (0.5/0.4/0.5/0.6) all matched last week.

FINALS UPDATE: Magnum P.I. (0.8) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC continued to see year-to-year growth with night two of the NFL Draft (0.8/0.8/0.6), up from last year's 0.5 for night two.
  • On CBS, Blue Bloods (0.8) returned with its first original in three weeks and is eyeing a new season high, while lead-in dramas MacGyver (0.7) and Magnum P.I. (0.7) were even. NBC's The Blacklist (0.6) was steady, while Fox's WWE (0.5) continued its downward slide in recent weeks.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 4/23/20

FINALS UPDATE: Man with a Plan (0.7) and Last Man Standing (0.7) adjusted up while NFL Draft (1.4, -0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A sports-starved populace showed up in force for ABC's coverage of Round One of the NFL Draft (1.8/1.6/1.3), up drastically from last year's round one which had a 1.2 in prelims/finals. There was also coverage on ESPN/NFL Network.
  • NBC threw the finales of its Thursday staples up against the Draft, and the series finale of Will and Grace (0.5) managed to decline week-to-week at 9/8c, with a retrospective special (0.5) matching it at 9:30. W&G was actually the lowest-rated NBC show as the finales of Superstore (0.7), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.6) and Law and Order: SVU (0.7) were all even with their last episodes.
  • CBS' Man with a Plan (0.6) and Broke (0.6) each dipped as their respective lead-ins went back into repeats, though Broke managed to grow on its Mom repeat lead-in (0.5). Fox's Last Man Standing (0.6) and the CW (0.1/0.1) were even.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 4/22/20

FINALS UPDATE: The Masked Singer (2.1) adjusted up while SEAL Team (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox began airing The Masked Singer aftershows to fill out the night, with the regular 8/7c hour averaging a 2.0 (down a tenth vs. the last regular episode two weeks ago) and the 9/8c hour including the aftershow dropping to 1.4.
  • ABC was down in the 8/7c hour with The Goldbergs (0.8) and Schooled (0.6), even at 9/8c with American Housewife (0.6) and Single Parents (0.5), and down again at 10/9c with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (0.5), in its final episode before a move to Thursday at 8/7c.
  • Free from Chicago competition, the CBS dramas SEAL Team (0.8) and S.W.A.T. (0.6) were both on the upswing, but still way behind their Survivor (1.5) lead-in.

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 4/21/20

FINALS UPDATE: New Amsterdam (R) (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox didn't get much of a spike for an episode that unexpectedly turned out to be the series finale of Empire (0.8), but it was still the show's highest rating since October.
  • Its chief original competition was CBS' two hour Grammy Salute to Prince (1.0). Leading out of comedy repeats (0.6/0.4/0.4/0.3), ABC's For Life (0.4) hit its second consecutive new low. And the CW's The Flash (0.4) and Legends of Tomorrow (0.2) returned.

    FINALS UPDATE: No adjustments.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Week two of the new ABC Monday saw The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart (0.6) slide down, but The Baker and the Beauty held onto last week's 0.5 at 10/9c.
    • NBC's The Voice (1.3/1.4) stayed on top but was down multiple tenths from last Monday, while Songland (0.8) matched last week's premiere. Fox was also lower than a week ago with 9-1-1 (1.2) falling to a season low and Prodigal Son (0.7) returning flat at 9/8c.

    Spotted Ratings, Thursday 4/16/20

FINALS UPDATE: Station 19 (1.2) and Superstore (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • ABC put the power of Disney on display during the pandemic with huge numbers for the Disney Family Singalong (2.6), preliminarily notching the exact same 18-49 rating as another Disney musical event from the fall, The Little Mermaid Live! It was the highest rating for anything since the Academy Awards in early February, narrowly topping events like the top Democratic debate and the season highs for The Bachelor and The Masked Singer.
    • The huge 8/7c hour kept the remains of TGIT, Station 19 (1.3) and How to Get Away with Murder (0.6), at typical levels despite the loss of Grey's Anatomy.
    • On CBS, Young Sheldon (1.0) and Mom (0.8) were back at the top of the hours but down multiple tenths vs. two weeks ago. At the bottom of the hours, Man with a Plan (0.7) and Broke (0.7) were even. Tommy was back down to 0.5 at 10/9c.
    • The CW opened the sophomore season of In the Dark (0.1) at 9/8c, matching its lead-in from Katy Keene (0.1).
    • NBC's Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.6) and Will and Grace (0.6) were even, while Indebted (0.4) was up a tick as Law and Order: SVU (0.7) returned at 10/9c. Fox's Last Man Standing (0.6) declined a tenth.

    Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 4/15/20

FINALS UPDATE: The Goldbergs (0.9), Survivor (1.6) and The Masked Singer (1.8) adjusted up while S.W.A.T. (R) (0.3) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • ABC began Wednesday life after Modern Family with The Goldbergs at 0.8, then dropped another tenth in each half-hour with Schooled (0.7), American Housewife (0.6) and Single Parents (0.5). That set up week two of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (0.6) for a hard fall at 10/9c, though it remained an improvement on previous occupant Stumptown for now.
    • Fox's The Masked Singer was lower than usual in a sing-along special (1.7), but LEGO Masters (1.2) was even anyway to conclude a strong first season. NBC's Chicago trio (1.1/1.2/1.1) was relatively steady in its last episodes of the season. CBS' Survivor (1.5) and the return of Riverdale (0.2) on the CW were even as well.

    Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 4/14/20

FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (1.3) adjusted up while FBI: Most Wanted (0.7), New Amsterdam (0.9) and NBC News Special Report: Coronavirus Pandemic (0.5) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • CBS had the season finale of NCIS (1.2), down a tenth from last week, leading into a double dip of FBI: Most Wanted (0.9/0.8). NBC was not too far behind with a declining Ellen's Game of Games (1.0) leading into a big uptick for a special 9/8c finale for New Amsterdam (1.0). That would tie its season high if it holds in finals.
    • On ABC, The Conners (1.0) was even but the rest of the night (0.6/0.5/0.5/0.5) slid down a tenth. Empire stayed at 0.7 with a repeat of The Masked Singer (0.6) as its lead-in.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/13/20

FINALS UPDATE: The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart (0.7) adjusted up while Songland (0.8) and TMZ Investigates: Tiger King (1.0) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • ABC's Bachelor universe hot streak came to an end with short-order spin-off The Bachelor Presents: Listen to Your Heart (0.7/0.6), which pulled barely a third the average of the most recent Bachelor season. And that provided little help for the launch of new drama The Baker and the Beauty (0.5) at 10/9c.
    • On NBC, The Voice (1.6/1.5) led into the season two premiere of Songland (0.9), which was down just a touch in Plus from its 1.1 launch after America's Got Talent last summer.
    • Fox's 9-1-1 (1.5) had a big night, posting its highest rating since October, and the lead-in was well utilized on a strong TMZ special on the Netflix phenomenon Tiger King (1.1).
    • CBS was even with The Neighborhood (1.0), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.8) and Bull (0.7), while All Rise (0.6) shed a tenth at 9/8c. The CW's Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.2) and Roswell, New Mexico (0.1) also matched last week.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • CBS Friday got a bit weaker with the return of Magnum P.I. (0.7) at 9/8c, matching its last episode from over two months ago but two tenths behind the last couple Hawaii Five-0 episodes. Lead-in MacGyver (0.7) inched down at 8/7c.
    • 8/7 dramas The Blacklist (0.7) and Charmed (0.2) were both on the uptick, while ABC matched last week with Shark Tank (0.8) and 20/20 (0.6).

    Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 4/8/20

FINALS UPDATE: The Masked Singer (2.1) adjusted up while SEAL Team (0.6) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • ABC said farewell to Modern Family in strong fashion, with a retrospective special scoring a robust 1.3 in the 8/7c hour and the one-hour series finale (1.6) up by at least 60% week-to-week. That's a similar finale spike to what The Big Bang Theory saw last season. And the big lead-in helped ABC's latest incarnation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (1.1) to a good start in the 10/9c hour.
    • Modern had plenty of competition, as NBC's Chicago trio (1.2/1.2/1.1) returned and was down a tenth or two vs. two weeks ago. 8/7c reality staples The Masked Singer (2.0) and Survivor (1.5) were also nicked, while LEGO Masters (1.2) preliminarily grew a tick and CBS dramas SEAL Team (0.7) and S.W.A.T. (0.5) were their usual selves.

FINALS UPDATE: Bless This Mess (0.7) adjusted up.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • ABC was back to originals after a week off, with The Conners (1.0) and Bless This Mess (0.6) each dropping a tenth but Mixed-ish (0.6), Black-ish (0.6) and For Life (0.6) all even.
    • NBC's Ellen's Game of Games (1.2) also returned to top the night, down from when it was airing with This Is Us during the viewing inflation but still ahead of everything it did in the early winter. The Resident (0.8) was even in its own return from a week off, and helped Empire (0.7) rebound at 9/8c.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/6/20

FINALS UPDATE: Manifest (0.7) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Back to originals for the first time in three weeks, comedies The Neighborhood (1.0) and Bob Hearts Abishola (0.8) each inched down from their season highs last time, but legal dramas All Rise (0.7) and Bull (0.7) remained on the high end.
    • On NBC, The Voice (1.4/1.5) took a dip, but Manifest (0.8) is at least preliminarily eyeing a finale night uptick at 10/9c. ABC got good mileage out of Celebrity Family Feud repeats (0.9/1.0) but not a lot from a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? behind-the-scenes special (0.5) at 10/9c.

    Spotted Ratings, Sunday 4/5/20

FINALS UPDATE: Little Big Shots (0.3), The Simpsons (R) (0.2) and Bob's Burgers (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • In the usual Academy of Country Music Awards slot, CBS went with a more socially distant two-hour ACM special (1.0) which was close to 40% below last year's ACM Awards ratings. At 10/9c, the network replayed the Wednesday Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood special (0.7) and got nearly the same demo as the original run.
    • The CBS competition may have slightly dented ABC's American Idol (1.2), but the net still won each hour head-to-head, including a steady return for The Rookie (0.8) at 10/9c. NBC (0.4/0.5/0.4/0.4) was low but mostly even with last week, the exception being Good Girls which dropped a tenth.

    Saturday, April 4, 2020

    Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/3/20

FINALS UPDATE: Shark Tank (0.8) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • The series finale of Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) matched last week's season high-tying rating. It was surrounded by even performances from MacGyver (0.8) and Blue Bloods (0.7).
    • Fox's WWE SmackDown! fell to 0.6 for the first time in its Fox run, and the CW's Charmed dropped to 0.1 for the third time this season. The rest of broadcast was roughly even, from ABC with Shark Tank (0.9) and 20/20 (0.7/0.6) to NBC with The Blacklist (0.6) and Dateline (0.6).

    Spotted Ratings, Thursday 4/2/20

FINALS UPDATE: Legacies (R) (0.1) adjusted up while Last Man Standing (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Back with originals for the first time in three weeks, it was a breakout night for the CBS Thursday comedies, with Young Sheldon (1.3) and Mom (1.0) both surging to new season highs. Each show led into a premiere night at the bottom of the hour: veteran Man with a Plan (0.9) returned to the 8:30 timeslot, while newbie Broke (0.9) looked good at 9:30. At 10/9c, Tommy (0.6) hit a new high of its own.
    • ABC was flat with Station 19 (1.1) but up a notch with Grey's Anatomy (1.4), leading into the return of How to Get Away with Murder (0.6) at 10/9c. Murder was a little weaker than what A Million Little Things has been doing here since the viewership inflation began, but it was still the show's best rating since the season premiere.
    • Against the return of CBS comedy, NBC came down from its recent highs, with Superstore (0.7) down two tenths and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.5) along with Law and Order: SVU (0.6) losing one. Fox's Last Man Standing (0.7) was also down a notch.

FINALS UPDATE: Modern Family (1.0) adjusted up while Chicago Med (R) (0.6) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • A two-hour edition of The Masked Singer (2.3/2.5) went even bigger than usual, hitting the show's highest Wednesday ratings since the fall premiere night.
    • ABC was even-ish in the first half of the night with The Goldbergs (0.9), Schooled (0.6) and the penultimate week of Modern Family (0.9), but improved from there with American Housewife (0.7) hitting its best number since its return to Wednesday and a David Blaine special (0.7) outrating usual occupant Stumptown at 10/9c.
    • CBS' Survivor (1.6) led into a Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood special (0.8) which narrowly improved on SEAL Team's usual level.
