Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/28/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Chase (0.7), Mom (R) (0.4), Mr. Mayor (0.6) and Law and Order: SVU (R) (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • There was no week four rebound for the ABC game shows, as Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.8), The Chase (0.6) and The Hustler (0.5) were in line with last week's prelims (Chase actually down a notch).
  • Week two of Walker (0.3), like All American on Monday, dropped a tenth from its premiere.
  • As some shows went into repeats, most other big four originals were even including Fox's Hell's Kitchen (0.7), Call Me Kat (0.6) and Last Man Standing (0.4). The Unicorn fell to 0.3 airing after 90 minutes of repeats (0.5/0.4/0.3).

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 1/27/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Goldbergs (0.6), The Conners (0.6), The Price Is Right Special (0.8) and The Masked Dancer (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The broadcast upswing on Monday/Tuesday came to a crashing halt on Wednesday, with The Goldbergs (0.5), American Housewife (0.4) and The Conners (0.5) all plummeting to what would be new series lows, and Call Your Mother (0.4) and For Life (0.3) tying their lows.
  • Fox also took a hit with The Masked Dancer (0.5), though Name That Tune managed to hold onto 0.6 and actually build on its lead-in. NBC was on top with One Chicago (0.9/0.9/0.9), all down a tenth if they don't adjust up, while The Price Is Right (0.7) returned to lead into SEAL Team (0.5) and S.W.A.T. (0.4).

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/26/21

FINALS UPDATE: To Tell the Truth (0.7), NCIS (1.0), FBI: Most Wanted (0.7) and This Is Us (R) (0.3) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC united its Anthony Anderson-fronted shows as a winter run of To Tell the Truth (0.6) led into a Tuesday return for Black-ish (0.6) and the second season premiere of its spin-off Mixed-ish (0.6). Black-ish improved upon its late fall episodes after The Conners, and Mixed-ish also grew from when we last saw it in the spring. Big Sky (0.6) rounded out a consistent night at 10/9c, holding onto the same demo rating it was getting after The Bachelorette.
  • Two nights after its post-AFC Championship exposure, FBI (0.8) aired its first Tuesday episode of the new year, sandwiched by NCIS (0.9) and FBI: Most Wanted (0.6).
  • Fox's The Resident (0.6) pulled farther ahead of its lead-out Prodigal Son (0.4) in week three, while Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist inched back up to 0.5 on another repeat night for This Is Us.

FINALS UPDATE: The Bachelor (1.5), The Neighborhood (1.0), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.8), Ellen's Game of Games (0.7) and The Wall (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The big four networks were even to slightly up from last week, including a new season high from CBS' The Neighborhood (0.9). The Bachelor (1.4) remained on top with The Good Doctor (0.7) growing at 10/9c, and Fox's duo of 9-1-1 (1.2) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (1.0) took no real drop from last week's premieres.
  • Week two of All American (0.3) inched down from last week's breakout opener, but remained ahead of most of its raw numbers from last season.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/21/21

FINALS UPDATE: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.9), B Positive (0.7), Law and Order: SVU (0.7) and Call Me Kat (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CW improbably picked up its second 0.4 of the week with the premiere of new drama Walker on Thursday. This may well be the biggest CW series premiere in Plus in over three years, since Black Lightning got a 0.8 after The Flash in early 2018. It got there on the back of a much older-skewing audience than the typical CW fare; its 2.431 million total viewers were the most on the network in almost three years. It led into the return of Legacies (0.2) at 9/8c.
  • On ABC, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.8) took a hard crash against full competition in week three, and The Chase (0.7) and The Hustler (0.5) went down with it.
  • The CBS comedies returned with Young Sheldon (0.8), B Positive (0.6) and Mom (0.6) up a notch from their fall finales, while The Unicorn (0.4) stayed low at 9:30.
  • NBC (0.5/0.4/0.6/0.3) and Fox (0.7/0.5/0.4) were both even to narrowly down.

FINALS UPDATE: Celebrating America ABC (0.7), Celebrating America CBS (0.5) and The Masked Dancer (0.7) adjusted up while Riverdale (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • On inauguration evening, ABC (0.7/0.6), CBS (0.5/0.4) and NBC (0.8) simulcast the Celebrating America concert from 8:30 to 10:00, with coverage of the inauguration in the 8:00 half-hour. ABC used this to lead into originals of its usual 9:00 comedy hour of The Conners (0.6) and Call Your Mother (0.4).
  • Fox was down a tenth with its regular lineup of The Masked Dancer (0.6) and Name That Tune (0.6), and the CW was back to its regular Wednesday lineup of with Riverdale (0.2) and Nancy Drew (0.1).

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/19/21

FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (0.8) and FBI: Most Wanted (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NCIS (0.8/0.7) returned to CBS with a double-episode winter premiere, with the 8/7c hour ticking up slightly from its last episode in December. FBI: Most Wanted (0.5) returned steady at 10/9c.
  • Fox had week two of The Resident (0.5) and Prodigal Son (0.5), with the former taking a somewhat steep decline vs. last week's 0.65 premiere. With This Is Us in repeats due to COVID-related production delays, its surrounding programs Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.4) and Nurses (0.2) were both on the downswing.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/18/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Bachelor (1.4), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.7) and Ellen's Game of Games (0.7) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Day two for the CW's return to regular programming went way better than day one, with an explosive (by CW standards) 0.4 for the return of third-year drama All American, up a tenth from last season's already way up premiere. This was also the first time it hit a 0.3 in A18-34 since that premiere.
  • Fox dramas 9-1-1 (1.2) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (0.9) also returned, with the mothership down 20%ish from last year's premiere but in line with its spring 2020 raw numbers, while Lone Star put up the same 0.9 from the last three weeks of its winter 2020 run.
  • ABC had a The Bachelor bounce-back (1.3), up at least a tick following last week's struggles against football, while The Good Doctor remained at 0.6. The CBS comedies (0.8/0.6) and Bull (0.5) along with everything on NBC (0.6/0.5/0.5) matched their last final ratings.

FINALS UPDATE: The Rookie (0.5), 60 Minutes (1.2) and NFL Playoffs (9.9, +1.8) adjusted up while The Great North (2.1, -0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox had a huge NFL playoff game in primetime (8.1), leading into another preview of The Great North (2.6 for the 10:00 half-hour) and an original Family Guy (1.1 for the 10:30 half-hour).
  • ABC had a rough time against the bigger competition with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (0.4) moving to 8/7c and Card Sharks (0.3) returning at 9/8c, while The Rookie (0.4) managed to build on its lead-in. CBS' NCIS spin-offs (0.6/0.5) held up a little better thanks to some indirect help from the late afternoon game on CBS, which led into 60 Minutes (1.1).
  • And the CW's Batwoman (0.1) quietly became the first of the network's regular scripted stable to return after sitting out in the fall due to production delays. If it doesn't adjust up, it would be just the second 0.1 ever for Batwoman (it got there against the Grammys around this time last year).

FINALS UPDATE: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (1.2), The Chase (0.9), Young Sheldon (R) (0.6), Mom (R) (0.4) and Call Me Kat (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's game show lineup stayed on top but declined narrowly in week two, with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (1.1) matching last week's prelim (later adjusted up to a 1.2 final) while The Chase (0.8) and The Hustler (0.6) were each down a tenth.
  • The most severe decliner was Fox's Call Me Kat, dropping to 0.5 after posting a 0.6 prelim/0.7 final a week ago. Its surrounding programs Hell's Kitchen (0.7) and Last Man Standing (0.5) both matched last week's prelims.
  • And on NBC, week two of Mr. Mayor (0.5) dropped a tenth vs. last week's 8:00 premiere, while Superstore (0.5) returned in the 8:30 half-hour to lead into Law and Order: SVU (0.6).

Thursday, January 14, 2021

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 1/13/21

FINALS UPDATE: American Housewife (0.6) and Chicago PD (1.0) adjusted up while Riverdale (R) (0.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC added new comedy Call Your Mother (0.5) to its comedy lineup after The Conners (0.6), where it looked maybe a little better than Black-ish (which was usually two tenths below The Conners in the fall). The night started with a steady The Goldbergs (0.7) and slightly down American Housewife (0.5).
  • NBC was on top with the returns of Chicago Med (1.0), Chicago Fire (1.0) and Chicago PD (0.9), with PD ticking up from its fall finale almost two months ago. The Fox reality duo of The Masked Dancer (0.7) and Name That Tune (0.7) matched last week, while CBS' SEAL Team (0.5) and S.W.A.T. (0.4) returned following a The Price is Right special (0.7).

Wednesday, January 13, 2021

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/12/21

FINALS UPDATE: Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.5) and This Is Us (1.0) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox dramas The Resident (0.6) and Prodigal Son (0.5) returned from roughly nine-month hiatuses with Resident tying its low from last season, while Prodigal Son is eyeing a new series low (though it had much better lead-ins throughout season one).
  • On NBC, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.4) and This Is Us (0.9) each dropped a tenth from their winter premieres, leaving TIU down by three tenths from what it was doing just in November and down roughly 40% from what it was doing at this time last year.
  • And the CW, filling six more Tuesdays before it finally gets The Flash back, brought back Two Sentence Horror Stories (0.1/0.1) and premiered Canadian import Trickster (0.1).

FINALS UPDATE: The Bachelor (1.2), The Good Doctor (0.6) and Ellen's Game of Games (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Opposite the college football national championship on ESPN, ABC's The Bachelor (1.1) took a hit in week two, and The Good Doctor (0.5) returned with its first 2021 episode on a new series low.
  • NBC also looked weaker, with Ellen's Game of Games (0.5) down two tenths from its 8:00 episode last week. The Wall held its 0.5 in a move to 9/8c, and Weakest Link (0.5) returned with typical numbers at 10/9c.

FINALS UPDATE: NFL Playoffs Overrun (7.5, +1.5), 60 Minutes (2.1, +0.2), NFL Playoffs (7.3, +1.1) and Family Guy (R) (0.4) adjusted up while Mr. Mayor (R) (0.5, -1.0) and NFL Playoffs Pregame (1.3, -2.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Returning to originals after its marathon was preempted on Wednesday, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (0.5) was even while its lead-out The Rookie (0.4) ticked down from last week's premiere. A repeat of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.6) took over in the 8/7c hour and outrated last week's Supermarket Sweep.
  • CBS' 60 Minutes (1.9) and the NCIS spin-offs (0.7/0.5) got a boost from a late afternoon NFL playoff lead-in, while NBC (6.8/6.5/5.5) dominated primetime with its own NFL game.

FINALS UPDATE: MacGyver (0.6), Mr. Mayor (R) (0.4), WWE SmackDown! (0.6) and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.1) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Some of the Friday originals had a high-end return to the new year, with CBS' Magnum P.I. (0.6) and Blue Bloods (0.6) each setting new season highs following a steady MacGyver (0.5). But the night still belonged to ABC led by Shark Tank (0.8), which tied its own season high.

Friday, January 8, 2021

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/7/21

FINALS UPDATE: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (1.2), The Chase (0.9), Mr. Mayor (0.6), Hell's Kitchen (0.8), Call Me Kat (0.7) and Last Man Standing (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC won a Thursday night full of premieres with its game show lineup of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (1.1), The Chase (0.9) and The Hustler (0.7). The first two hours started well despite coming nowhere close to last year's Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time ratings, while Hustler improved on its post-Bachelor preview from Monday.
  • On Fox, Hell's Kitchen (0.7) was back with its first original episode in almost two years, and was off just a couple tenths from the fall 2018 season premiere. Sitcoms Call Me Kat (0.6) and Last Man Standing (0.5) made the move to their regular timeslot, with Kat shedding most of its Sunday preview audience.
  •  And NBC was somewhat in the mix with the two-episode premiere of Mr. Mayor (0.6/0.5), rating at or narrowly above typical Superstore levels, plus Law and Order: SVU (0.6) returning from more than a month off.

Thursday, January 7, 2021

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 1/6/21

FINALS UPDATE: NBC News Special (1.1) adjusted up while ABC News Special (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The three-hour networks gave (most of) their primetime to coverage of the Capitol riots, with NBC (1.2/1.0/0.8) leading ABC (0.9/0.7/0.6) and the two hours on CBS (0.3/0.3).
  • Meanwhile, Fox went forward with its planned timeslot premieres of The Masked Dancer (0.7) and game show Name That Tune (0.7). Masked was of course nothing near the usual The Masked Singer ratings in the hour, but the lineup still basically doubled last year's early-winter options (Flirty Dancing (0.4) and Almost Family (0.3)).

Wednesday, January 6, 2021

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/5/21

FINALS UPDATE: FBI (R) (0.6) and Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Sophomore dramedy Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.5) made the move to Tuesday at 8/7c, where it ticked up a bit from its spring 2020 results. It was no help to its new lead-out This Is Us (1.0), which dropped by two tenths from its fall finale. Airing after TIU for the first time, Nurses (0.3) managed to drop below its first two episodes in December.
  • NBC could not pull into the nightly lead against a bunch of repeat/filler competition, as ABC got there with the broadcast premiere of The Lion King (0.7) and a half-hour of Senate election coverage (0.4). Fox had a two-hour Gordon Ramsay special (0.4).

Tuesday, January 5, 2021

Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/4/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Bachelor (1.3), The Neighborhood (0.8), Ellen's Game of Games (0.7), Ellen's Game of Games (0.6) and The Masked Dancer (R) (0.3) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC dominated the first Monday of 2021 with the season premiere of The Bachelor (1.3/1.2), but the show was down about a third from the premiere of last year's record-setting season. And a preview of Thursday reality effort The Hustler (0.5) did not show a lot of promise at 10/9c.
  • Ellen's Game of Games (0.6/0.5) moved to Monday and was about in line with a couple originals it aired early in the fall, and down massively from its winter 2020 premiere (1.0/1.1). It led into The Wall (0.5) at 10/9c.
  • CBS also returned to originals with The Neighborhood (0.7), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.6), All Rise (0.5) and Bull (0.5), most of which posted typical fall numbers and up a touch from their last episodes in December.

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 1/3/21

FINALS UPDATE: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (0.5), NFL Overrun (3.4, +1.1), 60 Minutes (1.2, +0.3), NCIS: Los Angeles (0.6), NCIS: New Orleans (0.5), Sunday Night Football (4.6, +0.8), NFL Overrun (Fox) (6.0, +2.7), The OT (2.6, +0.7), Call Me Kat (1.4), The Great North (0.7) and The Simpsons (0.6) adjusted up while The Outpost (0.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week 17 of the NFL season means national late-afternoon games on both networks, and Fox used its opportunity to preview Thursday-bound sitcom Call Me Kat (1.3), which held on rather well considering the Fox NFL games ended early and the network had just a preliminary 1.9 at 7:30. The network then fell off quickly with the premiere of animated newbie The Great North (0.6) at 8:30, The Simpsons (0.5) at 9:00, and finally a 9:30 preview of the final season of Last Man Standing (0.5).
  • ABC opened season three of The Rookie (0.5), down a couple tenths from its last season premiere in fall 2019, but it grew from its Who Wants to Be a Millionaire lead-in (0.4). Millionaire and Supermarket Sweep (0.5) pretty much stayed at their diminished December levels.
  • CBS gave its NFL lead-in to 60 Minutes (0.9 from 8:00-9:00) and the NCIS spin-offs (0.5/0.4 from 9:00-11:00), which could adjust up a touch since they started about 15 minutes earlier than the listed times.
