Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/28/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Chase (0.7), Mom (R) (0.4), Mr. Mayor (0.6) and Law and Order: SVU (R) (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • There was no week four rebound for the ABC game shows, as Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.8), The Chase (0.6) and The Hustler (0.5) were in line with last week's prelims (Chase actually down a notch).
  • Week two of Walker (0.3), like All American on Monday, dropped a tenth from its premiere.
  • As some shows went into repeats, most other big four originals were even including Fox's Hell's Kitchen (0.7), Call Me Kat (0.6) and Last Man Standing (0.4). The Unicorn fell to 0.3 airing after 90 minutes of repeats (0.5/0.4/0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.9), B Positive (0.7), Law and Order: SVU (0.7) and Call Me Kat (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The CW improbably picked up its second 0.4 of the week with the premiere of new drama Walker on Thursday. This may well be the biggest CW series premiere in Plus in over three years, since Black Lightning got a 0.8 after The Flash in early 2018. It got there on the back of a much older-skewing audience than the typical CW fare; its 2.431 million total viewers were the most on the network in almost three years. It led into the return of Legacies (0.2) at 9/8c.
  • On ABC, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.8) took a hard crash against full competition in week three, and The Chase (0.7) and The Hustler (0.5) went down with it.
  • The CBS comedies returned with Young Sheldon (0.8), B Positive (0.6) and Mom (0.6) up a notch from their fall finales, while The Unicorn (0.4) stayed low at 9:30.
  • NBC (0.5/0.4/0.6/0.3) and Fox (0.7/0.5/0.4) were both even to narrowly down.

FINALS UPDATE: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (1.2), The Chase (0.9), Young Sheldon (R) (0.6), Mom (R) (0.4) and Call Me Kat (0.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's game show lineup stayed on top but declined narrowly in week two, with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (1.1) matching last week's prelim (later adjusted up to a 1.2 final) while The Chase (0.8) and The Hustler (0.6) were each down a tenth.
  • The most severe decliner was Fox's Call Me Kat, dropping to 0.5 after posting a 0.6 prelim/0.7 final a week ago. Its surrounding programs Hell's Kitchen (0.7) and Last Man Standing (0.5) both matched last week's prelims.
  • And on NBC, week two of Mr. Mayor (0.5) dropped a tenth vs. last week's 8:00 premiere, while Superstore (0.5) returned in the 8:30 half-hour to lead into Law and Order: SVU (0.6).

FINALS UPDATE: Grey's Anatomy (1.2) and Thursday Night Football (3.6, +1.3) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's Station 19 (0.8), Grey's Anatomy (1.1) and A Million Little Things (0.5) were all down a tenth as most scripted options took the night off.
  • NBC had specials on Broadway (0.5) and the TIME Person of the Year (0.3). Fox easily beat the combined competition with Thursday Night Football (2.4).

FINALS UPDATE: Station 19 (1.2) and Thursday Night Football (3.5, +1.4) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC had a strong return from its Thursday drama staples Station 19 (1.1) and two hours of Grey's Anatomy (1.4/1.2). Both shows were off only a bit from their COVID-fueled heights from the spring, and above their pre-COVID winter levels. Grey's averaged a 1.1 in A18-34 in the 9/8c hour, tying last season's high.
  • On CBS, there was some consolation as Young Sheldon (0.8) ticked up from last week's premiere, but things quickly dropped from there. Newbie B Positive (0.5) declined even as its lead-in was up, and sophomore The Unicorn (0.4) had a slow start at 9:30, following a steady Mom (0.6).
  • Following an original (0.5) and repeat (0.3) of Superstore, NBC brought back Law and Order: SVU (0.6) at 9/8c, which came in toward the low end of its ratings in the 10/9c hour last year.

FINALS UPDATE: The Vice President and the People (3.0, +0.4), Emergency Call (R) (0.7), Big Brother (1.0), Decision 2020: Trump Town Hall (2.2, +0.5) and NLCS (1.5, +0.8) adjusted up while Dateline (R) (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • On a night of dueling presidential town halls, two hours of Joe Biden on ABC had a big edge on Donald Trump's 8/7c hour on NBC in the young adult demos (2.6 to 1.7 in A18-49, 1.9 to 1.1 in A18-34), but the older-skewing Trump event narrowed the gap noticeably in total viewers (12.229m to 10.386m). The Trump event was also simulcast on MSNBC and CNBC.
  • ABC aired a repeat of Emergency Call (0.6) at 10/9c, while NBC followed its event with two episodes of Connecting... (0.5/0.2).
  • Fox was on the map with the NLCS (0.7/0.7/0.8), and the CW's Supernatural (0.3) was down a notch from last week's big premiere.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 10/8/20

FINALS UPDATE: Match Game (0.4), Big Brother (1.0) and Thursday Night Football (4.5, +1.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC got almost no interest in new socially distant comedy Connecting... (0.3), and even less for a Seth Meyers special at 8:30 (0.2).
  • Against the return of Thursday Night Football (2.6/3.2/3.1) to Fox, ABC's game show trio (0.7/0.5/0.3) was down a tenth.
  • And the CW had a strong return for Supernatural (0.4) as it began its final run of episodes, matching its fall premiere from a year ago. But it was no help to the season three premiere of usual summer staple The Outpost (0.1).
