The War of 18-49, Fire Country

The New Friday Standard

Having recently said goodbye to a slew of strong Friday night dramas like MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I., CBS turned to new series Fire Country to keep the momentum on the night going. Alongside the nearly-cancelled S.W.A.T., the new lineup more than delivered, taking the CBS grip on the night to unprecedented heights. Fire Country began with 5.911 million viewers and a 0.40 demo, then got a big demo spike to 0.48 in week two. It jumped around a bit more throughout the fall, hovering around the eventual league average (0.43). Then it flew into decidedly above average territory with a huge January, beginning with a 0.56 (131 Plus) in its winter premiere. The season average was inflated by a football season, but it still averaged 102 Plus in its regular timeslot, becoming one of just a handful of entertainment shows in the entire Plus era to pull that off on Friday.

Fire Country went on to pull the historic feat off two more times, matching the 102 average in the strike-shortened season two and then growing to 104 in season three. Season three had a different shape from the other two, looking stronger than ever in the fall and spring but not getting its usual bounce in the winter.

The Bubble Bursts

Then came season four, in which that league average audience suddenly turned to dust. On premiere night, Fire Country aired at 8/7c to launch spin-off Sheriff Country, and it was still in its usual range with a 0.30 or 100 Plus. But the return to 9/8c saw a devastating drop all the way to 0.19 (63 Plus!), despite having its spin-off as a lead-in, and it never really recovered throughout the fall and winter. While it did finally begin to bounce back in its return from hiatus in April, managing several points in the 80's in the late spring, even that period was much weaker than its previous springs. Whether it was Big Data methodological changes, creative changes in the show, or both, it was a stunning regression for the night, back to where CBS was prior to the rise of Five-0 and Blue Bloods in the mid-2010s. But the network isn't making any changes, and will keep rolling with Fire Country and its spin-off in 2026-27.
