Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 2/23/21

FINALS UPDATE: FBI (R) (0.5), NCIS (R) (0.5), The Resident (R) (0.3), This Is Us (1.0), To Tell the Truth (0.6) and Young Rock (0.8) adjusted up while Superman and Lois Special (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The two-hour premiere of CW superhero effort Superman and Lois averaged a 0.3 in each hour. The actual program (from 8:00 to 9:30) may well have a 0.4 since the half-hours were 0.4/0.3/0.4, while the sneak peek special at 9:30 averaged a 0.3. It's another strong number by CW standards but it does not seem to have done better than the All American and Walker premieres in January.
  • Despite CBS/Fox repeat competition, it was a tough week two for the new NBC lineup as Young Rock (0.7) and Kenan (0.5) both preliminarily shed three tenths from last week's premieres, and This Is Us (0.9) will need finals help to avoid a new series low.
  • ABC also struggled with declines from To Tell the Truth (0.5) and possibly the Black-ish duo (0.5/0.4), while an extra To Tell the Truth (0.4) filled out at the night at 10/9c.

  • Fox had the delayed premiere of game show Cherries Wild (0.2), which was hopeless alongside Bless the Harts (0.2) in the 7/6c hour. The regular lineup of The Simpsons (0.5), The Great North (0.4), Bob's Burgers (0.5) and Family Guy (0.5) perked up from there but were still on the low end.

FINALS UPDATE: American Idol (1.2), 60 Minutes (0.8) and NASCAR (0.9, +0.2) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A week after its post-Super Bowl airing, The Equalizer (0.9) got off to a good start in its regular Sunday 8/7c slot, building on 60 Minutes (0.7) and outrating all episodes of the NCIS spin-offs on the night this season. • ABC had the return of American Idol (1.1), looking to be down 20%ish from last year's 1.47 premiere. It was also a boon to the surrounding programs, with America's Funniest Home Videos (0.8, tie) and The Rookie (0.6) both at season high levels.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • CBS premiered new drama Clarice (0.5) in the 10/9c hour, where it was actually ahead of the year-ago series premiere of Tommy (0.44). It was also a relatively nice night for the 9/8c comedy hour, with Mom (0.7) hitting a new season high and The Unicorn up to 0.5 for the first time since November. The night began with a steady Young Sheldon (0.8) and B Positive (0.6).
  • The ABC game shows returned with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.7), The Chase (0.6) and The Hustler (0.4) all eyeing potential new series lows in the prelims. The same goes for NBC's Mr. Mayor (0.4) and the CW's Walker (0.2) and Legacies (0.1).
  • Fox's trio of Hell's Kitchen (0.7), Call Me Kat (0.5) and Last Man Standing (0.4) were all even.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 2/10/21

FINALS UPDATE: For Life (0.3) and Chicago PD (0.9) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • CBS reality series Tough As Nails (0.5) returned for season two, with the same rating that was most common during its initial run in summer 2020.
  • On ABC, the 8/7c hour of The Goldbergs (0.6) and American Housewife (0.5) matched last week's finals (with Goldbergs up from last week's prelim 0.5). A repeat of The Conners (0.4) and an original Call Your Mother (0.3) led into the first preliminary 0.2 at 10/9c from For Life.
  • NBC's Chicago trio (0.9/1.0/0.8) fared similar, with Med down a tenth and Fire up a tenth vs. last week's prelims. And Fox's The Masked Dancer (0.6) and Name That Tune (0.5) looked a little better after preliminary 0.5/0.4 last week.

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 2/9/21

FINALS UPDATE: Black-ish (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • This Is Us (1.0) finally returned to originals and preliminarily matched its last rating from four weeks ago. It was no help to lead-in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.4) and lead-out Nurses (0.3), which were both even with last week.
  • The CBS dramas (0.9/0.8/0.6) matched their last prelims from two weeks ago, and the Fox dramas (0.5/0.4) were steady with their prelims from last week. (Most of those shows went on to adjust up in finals.) On ABC, Black-ish (0.4) dropped to join its companion Mixed-ish at 0.4, but Big Sky admirably pulled off another 0.6 at 10/9c.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 2/8/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Bachelor (1.4), The Neighborhood (1.0), Ellen's Game of Games (0.6) and The Wall (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • On Super Monday, CBS' Bob Hearts Abishola (0.8) tied its season high from two weeks ago, while lead-in The Neighborhood (0.9) will need adjustment help to do the same. All Rise (0.5) and Bull (0.5) were also steady.
  • It was an up night for Fox dramas 9-1-1 (1.1) and 9-1-1: Lone Star (0.9), but a down one for ABC's The Bachelor (1.3) and the unscripted options on NBC (0.5/0.4).
  • The CW's All American (0.3) rebounded from last week's 0.2, and Black Lightning (0.2) returned in the 9/8c hour.

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 2/7/21

FINALS UPDATE: The Super Bowl posted a 15-year low in total viewership with 91.629 million and an even worse historical performance in A18-49 (26.48), down 12% from last year. Lead-out The Equalizer (5.08) had a horrible showing in the demo compared to previous Super Bowl lead-outs but was more competitive in total viewers, skewing far older than the usual lead-out. Compared with last year's The Masked Singer, The Equalizer was off a whooping 38% in the demo but just 14% in total viewers.

WHAT MATTERS:

  • Numbers posted for CBS' Super Bowl Sunday. Lead-out The Equalizer started at 10:39 ET, almost exactly the same time as Fox's The Masked Singer a year-ago (10:40), so the prelim for the 10:30 half-hour should at least somewhat point toward the trendline. (Last year, Fox's 10:30 half-hour in the prelims averaged a 9.9, and Masked Singer ended up with an 8.14 in the finals.)

FINALS UPDATE: The Goldbergs (0.6), The Conners (0.6), Call Your Mother (0.4), Chicago Fire (1.0) and Name That Tune (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The ABC comedy lineup stayed low, with anchors The Goldbergs (0.5) and The Conners (0.5) both matching last week's prelims and needing adjustment help to avoid new lows. American Housewife managed to get back to a preliminary 0.5, but Call Your Mother fell to its first 0.3 and For Life (0.3) stayed there.
  • On Fox, Name That Tune (0.4) took an ugly drop after building on The Masked Dancer (0.5) last week.
  • NBC's winning trio roughly matched last week with Chicago Med (1.0) up a tick and Chicago PD (0.8) preliminarily down one. CBS' annual Super Bowl's Greatest Commercials special (0.6) took a major drop from last year's 1.0.

FINALS UPDATE: To Tell the Truth (0.6), Mixed-ish (0.5), FBI: Most Wanted (R) (0.4), The Resident (0.6) and Prodigal Son (0.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's revamped Tuesday couldn't hold onto its premiere ratings in the first two hours, with To Tell the Truth (0.5), Black-ish (0.5) and especially Mixed-ish (0.4) all down from last week's prelims. But Big Sky pulled off another 0.6 at 10/9c, looking all the more promising by comparison and actually winning the night outright in prelims.
  • Despite CBS in repeats (0.4/0.4/0.3), 8/7c dramas The Resident (0.5) and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.4) were down a notch from last week. Airing after yet another This Is Us repeat (0.3), Nurses inched back up to 0.3, and Prodigal Son posted another 0.4.
