Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 8/29/17

FINALS UPDATE: Lethal Weapon (R) (0.5) adjusted up while NCIS (R) (0.6), America's Got Talent (2.6) and Hollywood Game Night (1.0) adjusted down.

Cablemetrics: Game of Thrones, Ballers, The Sinner, Halt and Catch Fire

These numbers are current through Monday, August 28.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Game of Thrones packed on nearly a point for its season finale, ending its penultimate run with its third new series high of the season at 5.70. This was the year it officially became a worthy peer to The Walking Dead; though it still trails a bit in season average, its finale outrated the last Dead episode by 0.28 points. Since Dead will probably have aired at least another 1.5 seasons by the next time we see Thrones, you have to like Thrones' chances to outrate it when they are next compared.

FINALS UPDATE: Bachelor in Paradise (1.7) adjusted up while To Tell the Truth (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The two-hour reality shows returned to normalcy after last week's presidential interruption. We'll see if local preemptions in Houston bring any of these down, but at least in the prelims it was an up night for almost everything. ABC's Bachelor in Paradise (1.7/1.6) surged back to tie or beat its premiere rating, and To Tell the Truth (0.8) preliminarily upticked from its first original in this slot four weeks ago.
  • On NBC, American Ninja Warrior (1.5) and Midnight, Texas (0.9) were (at least preliminarily) up by multiple ticks from last week, and Fox's So You Think You Can Dance (0.8) also picked up a tenth.

FINALS UPDATE: NFL Preseason Football (1.9) adjusted up while America's Funniest Home Videos (R) (0.9), Celebrity Family Feud (1.1), Steve Harvey's Funderdome (0.7), The $100,000 Pyramid (0.6), Candy Crush (0.4) and Dateline (R) (0.8) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Celebrity Family Feud (1.2) was back with its first new episode in three weeks, and it had a nice uptick to top the show's last few originals. Steve Harvey's Funderdome (0.8) and The $100,000 Pyramid (0.7) were both even, and CBS was also close to steady with Big Brother (1.8) and Candy Crush (0.5).
    • All the preseason NFL on Sunday was nationally broadcast, with Fox's late afternoon game overrunning into the early part of primetime (1.5) and apparently boosting the comedy repeats (0.9/0.9/0.8/0.8/0.8). NBC had a fully primetime game (1.7/1.7/1.5).

FINALS UPDATE: NFL Preseason Football (1.4) adjusted up while What Would You Do? (R) (0.6), 20/20 (0.7), MasterChef (R) (0.5), Masters of Illusion (R) (0.2), Masters of Illusion (R) (0.2) and Penn and Teller: Fool Us (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Preliminary ratings are inflated due to NFL preseason preemptions. CBS had a nationally broadcast game. The most significant preemption on another network was Fox in Detroit.

(0.3) and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.3) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Preliminary ratings are inflated due to NFL preseason preemptions. Major market preemptions include CBS in Miami/Jacksonville, NBC in Philadelphia and the CW in Charlotte.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • NBC's Marlon (1.2/1.0) held up well in week two, shedding a tenth for the 9:00 episode and staying even at 9:30. Its lead-in America's Got Talent (2.0) was preliminarily down a tenth from last week, staying ahead of Big Brother (1.7) in what could be that show's lowest rating on a main night since the opening week.
    • Meanwhile, Fox's MasterChef (1.0/1.1) expanded to two hours for the first time this season, tying its season high in the 9:00 hour. It'll be in double-pump mode for the rest of the summer.

FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

Cablemetrics: The Last Ship, Survivor's Remorse, The Sinner, Game of Thrones

These numbers are current through Monday, August 21.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • TNT veteran The Last Ship (0.34/0.30) was back on the Sunday scene, about two months later than it usually premieres due to production delays. This was only a slight Plus decline from its last premiere (a 0.41/0.39 doubleheader in June 2016). While that may seem acceptable, it is worth noting that Last Ship took a big post-premiere surge last year, to 0.57 in week two and settling around 0.5 for most of the season. So the show will have a high bar to clear if it wants to stay close to these trends going forward.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 8/21/17

FINALS UPDATE: Bachelor in Paradise (1.3) and American Ninja Warrior (1.3) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Monday primetime got a shake-up thanks to a presidential address in the 9:00 half-hour on the East Coast, breaking up the Bachelor in Paradise (1.4 from 8:00-9:00; 1.3 from 9:30-10:00 and 1.0 for the 10:00 half-hour), American Ninja Warrior (1.4 from 8:00-9:00; 1.3 from 9:30-10:00 and 1.1 for the 10:00 half-hour) and So You Think You Can Dance (0.7 from 8:00-9:00; 0.6 from 9:30-10:00 and 0.8 for the 10:00 half-hour) telecasts into two chunks.
    • ABC preempted BiP lead-out To Tell the Truth in favor of a Black-ish repeat (0.6), while NBC aired Midnight, Texas (0.6) in its entirety starting at 10:30 ET.

    Spotted Ratings, Sunday 8/20/17

FINALS UPDATE: America's Funniest Home Videos (R) (0.8), Candy Crush (0.4), US Amateur Golf Championship (0.2), Family Guy (R) (0.5) and The Simpsons (R) (0.6) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Numbers coming shortly. Beware some minor NFL preseason preemptions, including Fox in New Orleans and ABC early in primetime in Los Angeles.

    The War of 18-49, Reign

    Another Thursday TVD Lead-Out

Period drama Reign stepped into a Thursday 9/8c timeslot after The Vampire Diaries that had seen yearly turnover. It didn't start nearly as well as previous occupant Beauty and the Beast, which had popped to a 1.2 on a simulcast debate night. Instead, Reign managed just a 0.8 for its 10/17/13 premiere, leading out of a 1.3 from TVD. And it appeared to be in real trouble when it fell right to a 0.6 the next week. However, it hovered around 0.6, mixing in a few 0.7's and a few 0.5's, for most of the rest of the season. Though it got softer at the end of the season, with a mix of 0.4's and 0.5's, it still marked a slight improvement on Beauty and the Beast's Plus from the year before. It got renewed, and became the show to snap the long streak of turnover at 9/8c; both TVD and Reign returned to their timeslots for 2014-15.

Unfortunately, it was the softer late spring version of Reign, rather than the fairly decent fall/winter one, that showed up in season two. This time, it hung around 0.4 for most of the season, with the occasional 0.3 or 0.5, before dropping to a consistent 0.3 in the spring. Some of this can be pinned on the TVD lead-in, as that show really kicked into its decline phase this season as well. But it was still clear that Reign had lost any claim as a schedule staple. Fortunately, it was a CBS Studios production, and that meant the studio wanted to keep it alive for awhile longer.

    Timeslot Downgrades

To the surprise of some, Reign made it back onto the fall schedule for 2015, albeit downgraded to Friday night. After hitting 0.3ish throughout that run, it took three months off and returned to Mondays in the late spring and early summer with more 0.3ish ratings. Season four didn't premiere till February, once again spilled well into June, and was a steady diet of 0.2's.

FINALS UPDATE: MasterChef (1.0) adjusted up while Salvation (0.4) and The F Word (0.5) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • NBC's America's Got Talent (2.1) joined the Wednesday fray, winning its first original head-to-head against Big Brother (1.9) on CBS. Talent was a bit below its first Wednesday original last summer, a 2.4 on July 13, but matched the 2.1 for its first Wednesday original after the Olympics.
      • Talent led into the double-episode premiere of late-summer sitcom Marlon (1.3/1.0). Two years ago, similarly scheduled sitcom Mr. Robinson averaged a 1.2/1.0 with a 1.5 lead-in, while The Carmichael Show had a 1.1/0.9 leading out of a 1.6 from Talent.
    • ABC's comedies sat out in favor of the CMA Music Festival (1.0/1.5/1.2) (labelled 'CMA Fest' for short this year). It appears the show will be even or slightly up from the 1.2 it has posted in the last couple years.
    • And after Big Brother, CBS went with a double-pump of Salvation (0.5/0.4) for the second time in three weeks.

FINALS UPDATE: Somewhere Between (0.3), Hollywood Game Night (1.2), The Flash (R) (0.2) and Legends of Tomorrow (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • After a breakout Monday premiere, ABC's Bachelor in Paradise (1.0/1.1) was much lower as it took up shop on its second night. The competition is admittedly tougher on Tuesday, but this is a really wide gulf; last year the Tuesday ratings were usually within a tenth or two of the Monday ratings. It will be interesting to see which version shows up next week.
    • Meanwhile, the timeslot after America's Got Talent (2.8) went back to Hollywood Game Night (1.3), which easily beat all of its Thursday results from earlier in the summer but was still a good bit lower than what World of Dance has been doing in this slot.

Cablemetrics: Game of Thrones, Insecure, Claws, The Sinner

These numbers are current through Monday, August 14.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Game of Thrones exploded to another new series high 4.98 on Sunday. As I said on here a few weeks ago, new series highs are nothing new for GoT, but this is the first time in three years that it has hit multiple series highs within the same season. With the finale still ahead, it seems likely that at least one more is coming.

FINALS UPDATE: Bachelor in Paradise (1.6) adjusted up while The Gong Show (0.7) and Midnight, Texas (0.7) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • After months of controversy, ABC's Bachelor in Paradise (1.5) returned to healthy ratings, topping its own 1.4 premiere from a year ago and even outrating some of the mid-section of the recently wrapped The Bachelorette season. It led into a special Monday edition of The Gong Show (0.8) at 10/9c, boosting that series to its best numbers since its first couple weeks.
    • On NBC, American Ninja Warrior (1.4) inched back down and narrowly lost the head-to-head with Paradise, while Midnight, Texas clung to 0.8 again at 10/9c.
    • And Fox improved its overall Monday average by expanding So You Think You Can Dance (0.7) to a second hour.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Several West Coast markets were preempted in the early part of primetime for an NFL preseason game, and CBS' Big Brother (1.9 in the 8:30 half-hour) and Candy Crush (0.6 at 9:30) were delayed by 18 minutes on the East Coast due to golf overrun. Stay tuned for updates!
    • At least in these prelims, ABC's Steve Harvey's Funderdome (0.8) ticked up despite a repeat lead-in from Celebrity Family Feud (0.9), while The $100,000 Pyramid was even at 0.7. Fox had the Teen Choice Awards (0.6/0.5), which were even to narrowly up vs. last year.

FINALS UPDATE: Everything adjusted down. This led to big week-to-week drops from both The Wall (0.7) and The Night Shift (0.5) on NBC. In that light, it was a win for SNL Weekend Update Thursday to muster up a 1.2, making it easily the second-biggest program out of the broadcast offerings.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Preliminary ratings are heavily inflated due to NFL preseason preemptions. Despite this, NBC introduced its summertime Saturday Night Live Weekend Update specials, and ABC wrapped up The Story of Diana. Check back later for updates.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • NBC's The Carmichael Show ended its run with a preliminary 0.8/0.7 for two episodes in the 10:00 hour, leading out of a two-hour America's Got Talent recap special (1.4). Beware because there were some local preemptions for the single NFL preseason game last night. (This problem will be much more pronounced with the Thursday and Friday ratings.)
    • Elsewhere, pending adjustments, ABC's Princess Diana miniseries The Story of Diana opened with a 1.0 rating from 9:00 to 11:00, leading out of what look like inflated comedy repeats (0.8/0.8). Big Brother broke a 2.0 in the prelims, leading into another 0.6 from Salvation. And Fox was on the downswing to season low levels with MasterChef (0.9) and The F Word (0.5).

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • NBC's freshman sensation World of Dance (2.0) wrapped up season one with a big finale spike, posting its best demo rating since the series premiere. It led out of America's Got Talent (2.7), which is an adjustment away from tying last week's season high.

Cablemetrics: The Sinner, The Guest Book, Ray Donovan, Game of Thrones

These numbers are current through Monday, August 7.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • USA's short-order Jessica Biel series The Sinner opened with a 0.42 on Wednesday, building on its lead-in from Suits (0.36). At least on premiere night, that puts it ahead of the rest of the USA pack from last week.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • In typical The Bachelorette fashion, the season finale vaulted to a new season high by a wide margin. The y2y comparisons are not in the table since it was in a different week this year, but it was down four tenths (or essentially even in Plus) vs. last year's 2.5 finale. This marked a departure from the typical Bachelor/ette finale night, which usually has a two-hour finale + After the Final Rose (which got a 2.3 last year).
    • Despite the bigger ABC, NBC's American Ninja Warrior (1.5) inched up to tie its season high, and Midnight, Texas hung onto 0.8 in its third episode.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Back from a week off, ABC's Celebrity Family Feud (1.0) inched down to a new season low, as did its lead-out Steve Harvey's Funderdome (0.7).
    • On CBS, Big Brother (1.9) will once again hope for finals help for its first trip into the twos this season. This time, the half-hours (2.0 -> 1.9) are potentially promising. Candy Crush was mired at 0.5 yet again.

The War of 18-49, Silicon Valley

Three Years With Game of Thrones

Armed with one of TV's biggest draws for young male viewers in Game of Thrones, HBO decided to try to launch a more male-skewing comedy with Mike Judge's Silicon Valley. With a lead-in that big, retention is going to look bad, and it definitely did for Silicon; it opened with a 1.08 demo rating on 4/6/14 while Game of Thrones opened its season at 3.61. The retention got worse from there, as Silicon headed south of 1.0 for the rest of the season.

It's all relative with these things, and in that sense Silicon Valley appeared to make real progress in season two. It posted a season of 7% raw numbers growth, while Thrones was down by 4% in 2016.  That meant it went from 26% of Thrones' average in 2015 to 29% in 2016, but even that small level of improvement was impressive given Thrones' own resiliency. However, season three saw Silicon drop by 7% while Thrones was up by 9%, and its average retention actually fell below the 25% mark.

    Without Game of Thrones

Perhaps due to Thrones' delayed start in 2017, that was the end of the pairing between Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley, and set up season four as an interesting test of how much lead-ins really matter on HBO. Silicon Valley was instead paired with The Leftovers for most of season four, a show that didn't do that badly yet still had less than 10% of Game's 2016 demo audience! Not surprisingly, Silicon Valley took a major hit; after never dropping below 0.80 in three seasons after Thrones, Silicon Valley never went higher than 0.47 in season four, and its full average was down by over half year-to-year.

But what was left was still a pretty acceptable demo rating by cable standards, and it outrated its Leftovers lead-in every week they were together. Even without Thrones, it remained one of the youngest and very most male-skewing shows on television. (67% of its 18-49 audience in season four was male, an even higher percentage than the NFL!) So life after Game of Thrones will continue.

    • Numbers coming soon. The NFL returned to the broadcast stage as the preseason opened with the Hall of Fame Game on NBC.

Schedules Plus: Network Averages on Thursday

This is a compilation of all the broadcast networks' Schedules Plus averages on Thursday, providing a look at how the network race has evolved over time on this night. These averages come directly from the night's Schedules Plus posts, which are linked in the table headers below. As with the individual Schedules Plus, it is important to keep in mind that these are not averages of every single thing that aired on the network, but just the most frequent occupant in each timeslot in each section of the year. See the Schedules Plus primer for more. The 'Avg' column and the charts cover only ratings for the big four networks.

FINALS UPDATE: Law and Order: SVU (R) (0.6) and MasterChef (1.1) adjusted up while Arrow (R) (0.1) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • America's Got Talent (0.9) had the first of two Wednesday recap specials before live Wednesday results shows begin. It had no real effect on The Carmichael Show, which preliminarily ticked back up to its usual 0.7.
    • Despite an uptick from Big Brother (1.9), it was a rough night for the CBS drama Salvation (0.5/0.4) in its first double-pump of the season (it's got another one coming in two weeks).

FINALS UPDATE: NCIS (R) (0.5) and America's Got Talent (2.8) adjusted up while Somewhere Between (0.3) and World of Dance (1.7) adjusted down.

Cablemetrics: Rick and Morty, Game of Thrones, Insecure, Teen Wolf

These numbers are current through Monday, July 31.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Two years after its last premiere, Adult Swim cartoon Rick and Morty (1.48) returned with a breakout performance on Sunday, exploding to 44% above its 2015 premiere and 32% above its series high (which was a 1.12 in the second episode of last season). 1.48 is great, but like all things Adult Swim, it is far more impressive in the even younger adult demos; it averaged a 1.94 in A18-34, which is well within megahit territory by broadcast standards.

FINALS UPDATE: To Tell the Truth (0.7) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • To Tell the Truth (0.8) took up yet another new timeslot, at 10/9c after The Bachelorette (1.5/1.4). The show improved on its recent run of 0.6's on Wednesday after comedy repeats, and was also much higher than ABC's recent scripted offerings in the Monday 10/9c hour.
    • TTTT tied NBC's Midnight, Texas (0.8), which was down just a tenth in its second week. It led out of a steady American Ninja Warrior (1.4).
      • There were a couple other low-key maneuvers on this Monday, including CBS debuting newsmagazine CBSN: On Assignment (0.4) in the 10/9c hour. Also, the CW swapped Hooten and the Lady (0.2) over to the night, while Whose Line Is It Anyway? will make the move to Thursday later in the week.
