FINALS UPDATE: Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- After last week's surge, MacGyver (0.8) and a double-pump of Hawaii Five-0 (1.0/0.9) were back down in their fall finales.
- They stayed just barely ahead of NBC's steady Blindspot (0.7) and Dateline (0.9), and everything on ABC (0.5/0.5/0.5) and Fox (0.8/0.4) also matched last week. The CW went with a Hollywood Christmas Parade special (0.3).
FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (0.9) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC's Once Upon a Time (0.5) and Agents of SHIELD (0.5) were finally together on the same night, with the latter dropping two tenths after last week's OK premiere.
- Everything else on broadcast was original as well, and it was a big bounce-back night for CBS with MacGyver (0.9), Hawaii Five-0 (1.1) and Blue Bloods (1.0) all on the rise. Fox was up as well, with Hell's Kitchen (0.8) and The Exorcist (0.4) inching off of last week's lows. And the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.2) and Jane the Virgin (0.3) made a one-off return to the scene after taking the last couple Fridays off.
FINALS UPDATE: Blue Bloods (0.8) and
The Exorcist (0.3) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Marvel's Agents of SHIELD (0.7/0.6) joined the Friday mix for ABC with a two-hour premiere, about in line with the ratings it was doing throughout the second half of last season.
- CBS had a little slippage with procedurals MacGyver (0.8) and Hawaii Five-0 (0.9), but Blindspot (0.7) was on the rebound for NBC. Hell's Kitchen (0.7) fell to a season low on Fox, leading into another 0.4 for The Exorcist.
WHAT MATTERS:- Once Upon a Time aired two original hours, with its usual 0.5 at 8/7c and its first 0.4 at 9/8c, as the network prepares to launch Agents of SHIELD after Thanksgiving. However, 20/20 (0.7) did better than usual at 10/9c. NBC's Blindspot (0.6) was also down to a new low.
- CBS gave back a bit of its surge from a week ago, with Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) and Blue Bloods (0.9) each down a notch while MacGyver held onto the 0.9.
WHAT MATTERS:- The CBS Friday lineup flexed a little muscle, as MacGyver (0.9), Hawaii Five-0 (1.1) and Blue Bloods (1.0) were all on the upswing to high-end results.
- Blindspot remained the best of the rest in the scripted world, posting a 0.7 for the third straight week. Meanwhile, the finale of Inhumans remained at 0.5, leading out of another 0.5 from Once Upon a Time. The Exorcist (0.4) couldn't hold onto last week's uptick and was back to its usual rating. And Jane the Virgin continued to oscillate around the 0.250 mark, back up to a 0.3 in the rounded numbers this week.
WHAT MATTERS:- All the Friday originals were back in place, and without a whole lot of movement. NBC showed some promise as Blindspot (0.7) matched last week's premiere and Dateline (1.0) was up, tying its season high and topping the night outright.
- Dateline's 1.0 was on top because Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) inched down from its usual level. Back at 8/7c, MacGyver (0.8) was also down a notch, while Blue Bloods hung at 0.9.
- On Fox, The Exorcist was back up to 0.5 for the first time since premiere week, leading out of a steady Hell's Kitchen (0.8).
- And it was status quo on ABC, with 0.5's across the board for Once Upon a Time, Inhumans and 20/20. The CW's Jane the Virgin couldn't hang onto last week's 0.3 and re-joined Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at 0.2.
WHAT MATTERS:- It was a devastating Friday night for ABC's genre dramas, as Once Upon a Time (0.5) and Inhumans (0.4) both tanked by two tenths.
- The CBS dramas were much steadier, with MacGyver (0.8), Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) and Blue Bloods (0.9) all matching last week. Fox was also even with Hell's Kitchen (0.8) and The Exorcist (0.4), but NBC's Dateline (0.7) had a rough night, dropping two tenths below all of its first three results of the season.
- And on the CW, Jane the Virgin (0.2) wasn't able to hold onto 0.3 for a second week on Friday. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend stayed at 0.2.
WHAT MATTERS:- The CW's premiere week ended with dramedies Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.2) and Jane the Virgin (0.3) reuniting on Friday, after occupying Monday together two years ago. The 0.2 is a familiar number for Crazy, which had it for all 13 episodes last year, while Jane was preliminarily able to hold onto 0.3 in a Friday move after actually hitting 0.2 a few times on Monday last spring.
- On ABC, Once Upon a Time held onto last week's 0.7 premiere, but Inhumans (0.6) and 20/20 (0.6) were both down a tenth.
- CBS' Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) and Blue Bloods (0.9) were both down a notch in the prelims, leading out of another 0.8 from MacGyver.
- And Fox's Hell's Kitchen (0.8) will hope for a third straight uptick in finals, while The Exorcist (0.4) couldn't even muster up a 0.5 in the prelims this time. NBC's Dateline (0.8/0.9) was down a tenth from last week in both hours with a lower lead-in from a repeat of Law and Order True Crime (0.4).
FINALS UPDATE: Hawaii Five-0 (1.1),
Dateline (1.0) and
Hell's Kitchen (0.9) adjusted up while
The Exorcist (0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Rebooted Once Upon a Time (0.7) took over its new role at the start of the ABC lineup in soft fashion, tying its lowest rating from last spring and down by almost half from last year's 1.3 Sunday premiere. Week two of Inhumans (0.7) settled into the 9/8c hour, dropping two tenths from last week's premiere.
- Week two of the CBS lineup saw MacGyver (0.8) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) hold even while Blue Bloods (1.0) was down a tenth. And The Exorcist held on at 0.5, leading out of a 0.8 from Hell's Kitchen (tying last week's prelim but needing an uptick to match last week's final).
Here are a few quick thoughts on what Premiere Friday says about the
renewal/cancellation landscape. These are based on prelims and I
probably will not get around to updating this page with the finals.
FINALS UPDATE: Hell's Kitchen (0.9) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- Life after Last Man Standing and Shark Tank began on ABC Friday with the two-hour premiere of Marvel's Inhumans (0.9/0.8) and 20/20 (0.6). For now, Inhumans was not that much weaker than what those shows did on the year-ago Premiere Friday, but this type of show does not have a sterling history of post-premiere holds.
- On CBS, the drama trio of MacGyver (0.8), Hawaii Five-0 (1.0) and Blue Bloods (1.1) returned intact from last season. MacGyver was only able to tie its weak finale low from last season, while Hawaii Five-0 also matched its finale and Blue Bloods was up a tenth.
- Fox also brought back its fall 2016 lineup of Hell's Kitchen (0.8) and The Exorcist (0.5). Exorcist did not live up to Fox's faith in it, opening on a new series low and just half of the year-ago series premiere. It was also a soft showing for Kitchen, which had never gone fractional in its 2016-17 season.
- We'll see Blindspot on NBC in a few weeks, but for now the network simply went with a repeat of Law and Order True Crime (0.5) and two hours of Dateline (0.8/0.9).
FINALS UPDATE: Caught on Camera (0.8) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS: - A mostly up week for ABC's comedy fall finales continued as Last Man Standing (1.2) and Dr. Ken (0.9) headed into the holidays on an up note. It was also a nice night for 20/20 (1.0), which grew out of a repeat Shark Tank (0.8).
- CBS was also mostly-but-not-entirely original, with Blue Bloods in repeat mode (0.9) while MacGyver (1.0) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.1) were original.
- NBC got a surprising Friday Christmas gift as Caught on Camera (0.9) was way above average, leading into Dateline (1.0).
- Fox finished out the season/series of The Exorcist with a fifth consecutive 0.6, leading out of yet another 1.0 for Hell's Kitchen.
- And the CDub stayed in holiday special mode with the Hollywood Christmas Parade (0.3), matching last year.
WHAT MATTERS:- The return of the CBS dramas put the eye back on top on Friday, despite small declines for MacGyver (1.0) and Hawaii Five-0 (1.2). Blue Bloods was steady at 1.2 in the 10/9c hour.
- On ABC, it was yet another 1.1 leading off from the durable Last Man Standing, but the rest of the night struggled as Dr. Ken (0.8) stayed on the low end, while Shark Tank (1.0) had a really weak night and 20/20 (0.8) fell back to its usual self.
- Fox's Hell's Kitchen (1.0) and The Exorcist (0.6) both came back after two weeks off, and both were even.
- The CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was back to a preliminary 0.2 (after hitting a prelim 0.3 last week and later adjusting down). It led out of 0.4 from The Vampire Diaries.
- And NBC had Caught on Camera (0.6) and Dateline (1.1), each down a tenth.
FINALS UPDATE: The Exorcist (0.6) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS' veterans Hawaii Five-0 (1.3) and Blue Bloods (1.2) each gave back part of their spikes, while MacGyver clung to 1.1 for the fifth time in the last six episodes. CBS Friday has aired in its entirety every single week of the season to date, but the streak will end with Black Friday next week.
- On ABC, Last Man Standing was preliminarily back down to its usual 1.1, while Dr. Ken held the 0.9 and Shark Tank stayed at 1.2. 20/20 (0.7) gave back all of its big post-election bounce from last week.
- In the Fox prelims, The Exorcist (0.7) took a tenth away from lead-in Hell's Kitchen (1.0).
- NBC's lineup of Caught on Camera (0.7) and Dateline (1.0/1.1) was up a bit.
- And The Vampire Diaries edged down to 0.3 for the CW, leading into another 0.2 from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
FINALS UPDATE: Last Man Standing (1.2) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:
- It was a big week for CBS' Friday veteran crime dramas, with Hawaii Five-0 (1.4) and Blue Bloods (1.3) each up by two tenths to tie their season highs and rank as Friday's top two programs. (Five-0's previous 1.4 came with over a half point more of lead-in support than what MacGyver did last night (1.1).) That means Five-0 has now picked up by 0.4 in two weeks since a 1.0 against the World Series.
- ABC also had some good news as Dr. Ken slid back up to 0.9, and 20/20 (1.1) finally showed some real life at 10/9c. Anchors Last Man Standing (1.1) and Shark Tank (1.2) had their usual numbers.
- It was an eerily steady night elsewhere:
- Fox: Hell's Kitchen (1.1) and The Exorcist (0.6)
- CW: The Vampire Diaries (0.4) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.2)
- NBC with Caught on Camera (0.6) and Dateline (0.9/1.0)
This is the first edition of Renewology's "Swings of the Week," looking at which shows this week had the biggest change in R%. How much did this week's ratings matter? This is our attempt at quantifying it. I will try to put this out every Tuesday going forward, though a lot of times I may not do much in the way of accompanying analysis.
