It's time for a journey through the CW Friday schedule in 2018-19...

The War of 18-49, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Spotted Ratings, Friday 4/5/19

FINALS UPDATE: Blindspot (0.4), The Blacklist (0.5), Dateline (0.5) and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.1) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The CBS dramas returned from basketball hiatus with Hawaii Five-0 (0.8) and Blue Bloods (0.8) both on the rise. Quite a few other shows were up as well, including the ABC comedies (0.6/0.5) and Fox's The Cool Kids (0.7), along with NBC's Blindspot (0.5) and Dateline (0.6).

• And the CW bade farewell to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with the series finale managing a 0.2 in the 8:00 hour (the show's first 0.2 since January). A 9/8c CEG special fell to 0.1.

FINALS UPDATE: Hell's Kitchen (0.9) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:

• The scripted programming on CBS and Fox was back to original after at least a week off. On Fox, comedies Last Man Standing (1.1) and The Cool Kids (0.9) were both down a tenth from three weeks ago. CBS' MacGyver (0.8) was up a tenth and Hawaii Five-0 (0.8) down a tenth to join Blue Bloods (0.8) for a very consistent night.

• NBC was also back from a single week off with downticks for Blindspot (0.5) and The Blacklist (0.5). ABC's Speechless (0.5) also fell a notch (vs. last week), while the CW's Dynasty (0.2) preliminarily got a post-renewal uptick.

WHAT MATTERS:

• With the usually dominant Fox comedies in repeats (0.7/0.6), ABC's comedies were on the high end with Fresh Off the Boat (0.7) and Speechless (0.6) both tying season highs. That led to a strong night for 20/20 (0.7/0.8) as well.

• CBS had matching 0.8's for MacGyver and Hawaii Five-0, marking an uptick for Mac and a downtick for Five-0. (Blue Bloods (0.6) was in repeats.) NBC was even with Blindspot (0.6), The Blacklist (0.6) and Dateline (0.6), while the CW got back up to 0.2 with the return of Dynasty (0.2), and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (0.2) followed suit.

WHAT MATTERS:

• Like on Thursday, the winter bounce seemed to come a week late for much of Friday. Fox comedies Last Man Standing (1.2) and The Cool Kids (1.0) both surged by two tenths from last week, while Hell's Kitchen (0.8) was up a notch. CBS dramas MacGyver (0.8) and Hawaii Five-0 (0.9) also grew by a tenth.

• And in its first episode of the winter, NBC's Blindspot rose to 0.6 for the first time all season, joined by another 0.6 at 9/8c from The Blacklist.

• The exception to the upward momentum was ABC, where Fresh Off the Boat (0.7) and Speechless (0.5) matched last week, while another two-hour 20/20 (0.6) couldn't hold onto last week's big surge. And the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was back from a month off with a return to 0.1.

WHAT MATTERS:

• It was a relatively big night for the ABC comedies, as Fresh Off the Boat (0.7) and Speechless (0.6) are each eyeing new season highs. That didn't help Child Support (0.4) a bit at 9/8c, though 20/20 (0.5) did inch up at 10/9c.

• Fox's Last Man Standing (1.1) and The Cool Kids (0.9) gave back last week's gains (plus dropped another tenth in LMS' case), but CBS was on the uptick with Hawaii Five-0 (0.8) and Blue Bloods (0.9).

WHAT MATTERS:

• Fox Friday became even more dominant, as Last Man Standing (1.3), The Cool Kids (1.0) and Hell's Kitchen (0.8) were all up from last week. Meanwhile, CBS was down with MacGyver (0.7) and especially Hawaii Five-0 (0.7), which tied its season low, while Blue Bloods (0.8) was steady.

• ABC's comedies (0.6/0.5) were even but Child Support fell back to 0.4. NBC is eyeing an 8/7c uptick for Blindspot (0.5), as is the CW with Dynasty (0.2).

WHAT MATTERS:

• 403 days after its first season finale, NBC drama Midnight, Texas (0.4) returned for season two, and it was a couple tenths below its previous low point. (Season one ranged from 0.6 to 0.9.) If there's any silver lining, it's that it appeared to skew younger than its Blindspot (0.4) lead-in, dropping a lot in total viewers but actually growing from 0.2 to 0.3 in adults 18-34. But it derailed its lead-out Dateline (0.5) at 10/9c.

• Against a marathon Game 3 of the World Series (3.4ish prelim), the CBS dramas (0.6/0.7/0.7) were all down a tenth. ABC's comedies sat out in favor of Peanuts specials (0.9), which helped lift Child Support (0.5) by a tenth.

WHAT MATTERS:

• With a World Series preemption coming next week, Last Man Standing (1.2) and The Cool Kids (0.9) each took a bit of a dip in their fourth weeks, hitting new season lows. The competing comedies on ABC made up a teeny bit of ground, as Fresh Off the Boat (0.6) and Speechless (0.5) were both on the uptick.

• Things got uglier for season four of Blindspot, which fell to its first 0.4 in week two, while Midnight, Texas is poised to take over for the 9/8c hour of Dateline (0.6) next week. And on CBS, MacGyver (0.7) inched back behind the net's other two dramas (0.8/0.8).

WHAT MATTERS:

• It was a very encouraging third week for the new dominant show on Friday, Fox's Last Man Standing (1.4), which grew by a tenth following last week's big drop. But the gap widened with its newbie lead-out The Cool Kids (1.0), as that lost a tenth. Hell's Kitchen remained at 0.8.

• NBC brought back veteran drama Blindspot (0.5) in the 8/7c hour, where it was two tenths below last season's premiere and in line with its late spring results from last season. Expanding to two hours for a couple weeks, Dateline (0.7/0.8) fared a little better.

• ABC's disappointing new TGIF didn't get any better in week two, with Fresh Off the Boat dropping to join Speechless at 0.5, while Child Support stayed at 0.4. A Melania Trump interview on 20/20 (0.5) brought that show up a touch. On CBS, MacGyver rose to match fellow dramas Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods at 0.8.

• And Surrender Friday was back on the CW with sophomore Dynasty getting back to a 0.2 at 8/7c, but the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend opened with the show's first-ever 0.1.
