Spotted Ratings, Monday 9/17/18

FINALS UPDATE: Primetime Emmy Awards (2.4, +0.3) adjusted up while Castaways (0.5), Castaways (0.4, -0.2) and The Good Doctor (R) (0.3, -0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • It was NBC's turn with the Primetime Emmy Awards, which meant the show couldn't air in its usual Sunday slot thanks to the NFL, though it did air much closer to the start of the season compared with the last several late-August ceremonies on NBC. The preliminary hours (2.2/2.3/1.9) were virtually identical to last year's 2.2/2.3/2.0 on CBS, which later adjusted up to a 2.5.
  • With the Monday reality staples wrapped for the summer, there was not much audience elsewhere on broadcast. Two hours of Castaways on ABC (0.6) were preliminarily close to a special on the Manson cult on Fox (0.6/0.7). CBS dramas Salvation (0.4) and Elementary (0.5) wrapped for the season.

FINALS UPDATE: Bachelor in Paradise (1.1, -0.3), The Good Doctor (R) (0.4, -0.2), Penn and Teller: Fool Us (R) (0.2), Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.2) and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC (Los Angeles/Oakland) and CW (New York) preliminary ratings are pending Monday Night Football preemptions.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 8/13/18

FINALS UPDATE: Mom (R) (0.7) adjusted up while The Proposal (0.5), Penn and Teller: Fool Us (0.4), Whose Line Is It Anyway? (0.3) and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • In its first Monday episode of the season, ABC's Bachelor in Paradise (1.3/1.2) perked up a little bit from its season premiere last Tuesday (1.1). That would be down from last year's season premiere on a Monday (1.6) but right in line with the 1.3 in Monday of week two last year.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 8/6/18

FINALS UPDATE: Elementary (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The three-hour season finale of The Bachelorette (1.8/1.8/1.7) got its usual hefty spike but was still roughly three tenths behind last year's finale. That's just a bit larger year-to-year decline than the season as a whole (which should finish about -9%, or up a touch in Plus).
  • Fox went with a two-hour edition of So You Think You Can Dance (0.6) while NBC was even to narrowly down with American Ninja Warrior (1.0/1.1) and Dateline (0.7).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 7/16/18

FINALS UPDATE: Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.3) adjusted up while The Proposal (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's The Bachelorette (1.5/1.6) began its late-season ascendancy, picking up at least a tenth from last week and possibly tying its season high. The Proposal (0.8) was also up a notch at 10/9c.
  • On NBC, American Ninja Warrior (1.0/1.1) continued to look a bit better in the earlier timeslot, even to slightly up vs. last week, while Dateline (0.9) had a strong outing at 10/9c.
  • CBS got no help from a TKO: Total Knock Out repeat (0.5) at 8/7c, as Salvation stayed at 0.3 (this time in the 9/8c hour) and Elementary at 0.4. And So You Think You Can Dance (0.6) was down a tick for Fox.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 7/9/18

FINALS UPDATE: Finals are listed below.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Big four ratings are uncertain till finals due to a news interruption for a Supreme Court announcement across much of the 9:00 half-hour.
  • NBC completed its Sunday/Monday shakeup with American Ninja Warrior (with a 0.9 in the 8:00 hour and a 1.0/0.8 from 9:30 to 10:30) returning to the first two hours of the night and Dateline (0.6) replacing Running Wild.
    • ABC's The Bachelorette (1.4 in the 8:00 hour, 1.4 at 9:30 and 1.0 at 10:00) looks to have gotten back to normal after last week's holiday hiccup, and Fox's So You Think You Can Dance (0.7) was also up.
    • CBS joined an NCIS: New Orleans repeat (0.4) in progress after the announcement and aired a Salvation original (0.3) at 10/9c.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 7/2/18

WHAT MATTERS:
  • With the 4th of July approaching, ABC stayed original and took a bit of a hit with The Bachelorette (1.2) and The Proposal (0.7). But fellow reality staples American Ninja Warrior (0.7) and So You Think You Can Dance (0.6) went into repeat mode.
  • Several lower-rated shows remained in originals: NBC's Running Wild (0.6), CBS' drama duo of Salvation (0.4, matching last week's premiere) and Elementary (down to 0.4 for the first time since Memorial Day), along with the CW's Penn and Teller: Fool Us and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (both steady at 0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: Mom (R) (0.6) and Man with a Plan (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 9/20/17

FINALS UPDATE: Big Brother (2.2) and America's Got Talent (3.0) adjusted up while Salvation (0.5) and The Good Place (1.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • As the summer ended for many a reality staple, NBC's comedy The Good Place (1.4) kicked off its second season in the 10/9c hour, leading out of a huge finale from America's Got Talent (2.7/3.0). Good Place dropped heavily from 1.7 to 1.2 at the half, and the 10:30 raw number represented a pretty typical Thursday delivery for the show last season. Talent will either match or beat its 2.8 finale from a year ago.
  • On CBS, Big Brother (2.2/2.1) was very impressive as well, topping its year-ago finale (which was on premiere Wednesday). If it can eke out a 2.2 after finals, it would be a new multi-season high for the series. It led into the finale of Salvation (0.6) in the 10/9c hour, which would actually be its highest rating in a couple months if it holds on.
  • MasterChef (1.0/1.2) was the one lost in the shuffle, actually declining by a couple tenths week-to-week (and three tenths year-to-year) in both hours.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 9/13/17

FINALS UPDATE: American Housewife (R) (0.7) and America's Got Talent (2.1) adjusted up while Midnight, Texas (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The schizophrenic Midnight, Texas (0.7) aired its penultimate episode on a special night. At least in the prelims, it was actually up from the Monday edition, despite a weaker lead-in from Marlon (1.2/1.0).
  • Among the Wednesday reality staples, MasterChef (1.2/1.4) posted what would be a new season high in each hour, while America's Got Talent (2.0) and Big Brother (1.8) were both barely down.

FINALS UPDATE: American Housewife (R) (0.6), America's Got Talent (1.9), Marlon (1.1), Marlon (0.9) and Law and Order: SVU (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

FINALS UPDATE: Big Brother (1.8) adjusted up while Speechless (R) (0.4), Salvation (0.4), Marlon (1.1), Law and Order: SVU (R) (0.6), Arrow (R) (0.1) and Supernatural (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC's Marlon (1.2/1.0) held up well in week two, shedding a tenth for the 9:00 episode and staying even at 9:30. Its lead-in America's Got Talent (2.0) was preliminarily down a tenth from last week, staying ahead of Big Brother (1.7) in what could be that show's lowest rating on a main night since the opening week.
  • Meanwhile, Fox's MasterChef (1.0/1.1) expanded to two hours for the first time this season, tying its season high in the 9:00 hour. It'll be in double-pump mode for the rest of the summer.

FINALS UPDATE: MasterChef (1.0) adjusted up while Salvation (0.4) and The F Word (0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC's America's Got Talent (2.1) joined the Wednesday fray, winning its first original head-to-head against Big Brother (1.9) on CBS. Talent was a bit below its first Wednesday original last summer, a 2.4 on July 13, but matched the 2.1 for its first Wednesday original after the Olympics.
    • Talent led into the double-episode premiere of late-summer sitcom Marlon (1.3/1.0). Two years ago, similarly scheduled sitcom Mr. Robinson averaged a 1.2/1.0 with a 1.5 lead-in, while The Carmichael Show had a 1.1/0.9 leading out of a 1.6 from Talent.
  • ABC's comedies sat out in favor of the CMA Music Festival (1.0/1.5/1.2) (labelled 'CMA Fest' for short this year). It appears the show will be even or slightly up from the 1.2 it has posted in the last couple years.
  • And after Big Brother, CBS went with a double-pump of Salvation (0.5/0.4) for the second time in three weeks.
