Spotted Ratings, Sunday 7/15/18

WHAT MATTERS:
  • CBS' Big Brother (1.4) was up for the second straight Sunday, expanding its lead on Celebrity Family Feud (1.0) which (at least preliminarily) fell to a new season low. ABC's The $100,000 Pyramid (0.9) was even while To Tell the Truth (0.8) was up a tick (though it had a 0.8 in prelims last week before adjusting down).

Spotted Ratings, Sunday 7/8/18

FINALS UPDATE: The Simpsons (R) (0.5) adjusted up while To Tell the Truth (0.7) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's game shows were close to their last originals from two weeks ago, with Celebrity Family Feud (1.1) down a notch and The $100,000 Pyramid (0.9) and To Tell the Truth (0.8) both even.
  • But CBS' Big Brother (1.3) came out on top in the first head-to-head with the Feud, ticking up from its Sunday premiere last week. (Feud looks better on a year-to-year basis, as it lost this matchup 1.8 to 1.3 a year-ago.)
  • And on NBC, Running Wild (0.3) got a severe downgrade to the Sunday 7/6 hour and lost half of its usual Monday audience. Shades of Blue posted another 0.5 at 10/9c.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 7/2/18

WHAT MATTERS:
  • With the 4th of July approaching, ABC stayed original and took a bit of a hit with The Bachelorette (1.2) and The Proposal (0.7). But fellow reality staples American Ninja Warrior (0.7) and So You Think You Can Dance (0.6) went into repeat mode.
  • Several lower-rated shows remained in originals: NBC's Running Wild (0.6), CBS' drama duo of Salvation (0.4, matching last week's premiere) and Elementary (down to 0.4 for the first time since Memorial Day), along with the CW's Penn and Teller: Fool Us and Whose Line Is It Anyway? (both steady at 0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: Mom (R) (0.6) and Man with a Plan (R) (0.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Full table will be posted next week. Sophomore CBS drama Salvation made the move to Monday, and the CW's Penn and Teller: Fool Us also returned.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 6/18/18

FINALS UPDATE: Whose Line Is It Anyway? (R) (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC gave The Bachelorette lead-in (1.4) to new unscripted series The Proposal (0.8). While an improvement on recent scripted series that have aired here, it barely managed half of its lead-in's rating.
  • On NBC, American Ninja Warrior (1.0) finally made the move to Monday, now at 9/8c leading out of Running Wild (0.7). ANW found itself below anything it had done on Wednesday earlier in the summer, and heavily below the year-ago 1.5.
  • The CW's Supergirl finished its season with an uptick to 0.5, and Fox's So You Think You Can Dance (0.8) was also on the upswing.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 5/21/18

FINALS UPDATE: Supergirl (0.4) and iZombie (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Spring reality staples Dancing with the Stars (1.1) and American Idol (1.6) were together for the first time, ending their seasons with one-hour and two-hour finales. DWTS was up a touch from the last couple weeks, while Idol bounced back markedly from last Sunday but still fell a bit below the live shows from previous weeks.
  • The ABC shows combined for a nightly win over NBC, which had its last Monday of The Voice (1.5) and another installment of Running Wild (0.7). Both networks easily beat out Fox's Miss USA competition (0.6), which was down two tenths from last year when it aired on a Sunday.
  • On CBS, the last two Monday originals standing were the only two that got renewed: Man with a Plan (1.0) and Elementary (0.5). Sandwiched by The Big Bang Theory repeats (1.1/1.0), MWAP was in the ones for the second week in a row. The CW's Supergirl (0.5) and iZombie (0.3) were both even and will continue airing into the summer.

FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (R) (1.1) and Man with a Plan (1.0) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Recently axed Lucifer (0.8) became the second show in as many days to end its season on an uptick in the midst of a huge online fan campaign. It was the show's first trip back to 0.8 since late March. Lead-out The Resident (0.9) also ended its season well.
  • CBS plugged in a repeat of The Big Bang Theory (1.0) at 8/7c, keeping Man with a Plan at 0.9 while Superior Donuts (0.9) joined in on the post-cancellation upswing trend in a big way. (It was the first 0.9 for Donuts since early March.) Elementary had 0.6 for the third week in a row at 10/9c.
  • Reality staples The Voice (1.6) and Dancing with the Stars (1.1/1.0) were even to slightly up, while the 10/9c lead-outs Running Wild (0.8) and The Crossing (0.5) were slightly down and even. The CW stayed on the high end of its spring levels with Supergirl (0.5) and freshly renewed iZombie (0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: Dancing with the Stars (1.0), Man with a Plan (0.9), The Voice (1.5) and Supergirl (0.5) adjusted up while The Resident (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Guest spots from Chris Rock and Adam Sandler brought the still not-yet-renewed Kevin Can Wait back up to 1.0 for its second season finale. But the momentum did not extend later in the night, as Man with a Plan (0.8) and Superior Donuts (0.7) stayed even. (Both will be original again next week following a The Big Bang Theory repeat.) Elementary (0.6) was also steady.
  • NBC had the return of Running Wild with Bear Grylls (0.9), which is back on a regularly-scheduled basis for the first time in two years. It matched last week's Good Girls finale, but The Voice (1.4/1.5) gave back all of its uptick from last week.
  • Fox's Lucifer (0.7) and The Resident (0.9) were both on the rebound after last week's lows. On ABC, the second week of Dancing with the Stars (0.9/1.0) was down a tenth or two from last week's premiere, while The Crossing (0.5) matched last week. And the CW's iZombie (0.3) is hoping for an uptick as a final decision on its fate awaits.

Spotted Ratings, Thursday 5/25/17

FINALS UPDATE: Running Wild (1.0) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • On the first day of summer, Fox was the only network starting a new original lineup with game shows Beat Shazam (1.2) and Love Connection (1.1). This is a strong start by summer standards, but especially when compared with the summer newbies Fox was premiering a year ago: American Grit (0.8), Houdini and Doyle (0.7) and Coupled (0.5).
  • After two years of low-rated Red Nose Day specials (0.8 in 2015 and 0.6 in 2016), NBC has shrunk the official event (0.7) for the second year in a row, now occupying just the 10/9c hour. To try to drum up interest in the concept, it was tied to special episodes of the network's regular series: American Ninja Warrior (1.1) at 8/7c and Running Wild (0.9) at 9/8c. That was certainly a positive for the nightly average as a whole.
  • CBS had Thursday's only other original episode, and it was a rough night for The Amazing Race (0.6).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 5/22/17

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (2.0) adjusted up while Jane the Virgin (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's summer tentpole The Bachelorette (1.8/1.7) made its usual return on the last Monday of the regular season and took a slightly less than league average drop from last year's 2.0 premiere. It led out of a promising final Monday of the season from Dancing with the Stars (1.8), which was preliminarily just a tenth below the year-ago performance finale.
  • NBC's The Voice (1.9) also looked strong on performance finale night; like DWTS, it was just a tenth below what it did on the final Monday last spring. It led into a special edition of Running Wild (0.9), which fell behind recent The Wall outings in the hour.
  • CBS was the last of the big three networks to go with a two-hour Princess Diana special this month (0.7/0.8), and it mustered up roughly the same kind of upper-0 demo we saw from NBC's Dateline (0.8) on May 5 and ABC's last 100 days special (0.9) on May 7. It led into a Carpool Karaoke special (0.7) at 10/9c.
  • Fox's Gotham (1.0) was up a notch, while Lucifer (0.8) continued to look a little soft at 9/8c.
  • And the CW wrapped up its Monday dramas with the finales of Supergirl (0.6) and Jane the Virgin (0.4). If these actually hold in finals, it would continue Jane's bizarre oscillation between 0.2 and 0.4 in the last month.

FINALS UPDATE: Fresh Off the Boat (R) (0.7) and Big Brother (1.8) adjusted up while Blindspot (1.5) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC opened the 2016-17 season for broadcast drama with the season two premiere of Blindspot (1.6) at 10/9c. It beat the show's last eight post-Voice results, though those episodes generally had much smaller lead-ins than this one, and Blindspot took a fairly sizable drop from 1.8 to 1.4 at the half. It won't get any easier for Blindspot as it heads for 8/7c starting next week.
    • As for that lead-in, it was the two-hour finale of America's Got Talent (2.4/3.1), which will probably about tie its performance finale from Tuesday, and absolutely demolish the 2.1 season finale from a year ago.
  • Fox had its last highlight of the summer with the season finale of MasterChef (1.3/1.5), which eked out a new season high in the 9/8c hour against the big competition.
  • CBS' Big Brother (1.7) edged down a bit at 8/7c, leading into repeats of Criminal Minds (0.7) and (finally in its actual fall timeslot) Code Black (0.6).
  • ABC had one last sextet of comedy repeats (0.7/0.8/0.9/0.8/0.8/0.6). Penn and Teller: Fool Us stayed at 0.4 but the original (0.3) and repeat (0.3) of Whose Line Is It Anyway? had a soft night.

FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (R) (1.2) and So You Think You Can Dance (0.7) adjusted up while Dancing with the Stars (2.1) and The $100,000 Pyramid (1.0) and The Big Bang Theory (R) (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Numbers and analysis coming shortly. ABC opened a new season of Dancing with the Stars on Monday, but be wary of preliminary numbers due to Monday Night Football preemptions. Elsewhere, NBC's American Ninja Warrior and Fox's So You Think You Can Dance wrapped their seasons.

Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 9/7/16

FINALS UPDATE: America's Got Talent (2.0) and Big Brother (1.9) adjusted up. Please note that the final for the "Commander-in-Chief Forum" is the combined rating of the NBC/MSNBC simulcast, a trick we'll soon be seeing regularly with Thursday Night Football.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC expanded on its usual Wednesday dominance with a one-hour 'Commander-in-Chief Forum' (1.8) at 8/7c, featuring both major presidential candidates. It led into America's Got Talent (1.9) and a special Running Wild (1.2).
  • CBS' Big Brother (1.8) inched down in the prelims but narrowly boosted the first hour of the double-length American Gothic finale (0.6/0.5).
  • Another two hours of Fox's MasterChef went 1.3/1.4 for the third consecutive Wednesday, while most of ABC's comedy repeats (0.9/0.9/1.0/0.8/0.8/0.7) were up a tenth from last week.
  • The CW's Penn and Teller: Fool Us was back down to its usual 0.4, while Whose Line Is It Anyway? and the 9:30 repeat had 0.4 yet again.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 9/5/16

FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (R) (1.0) and The Odd Couple (R) (0.8) and American Ninja Warrior (1.6) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • It was a rather soft end to Labor Day Weekend for the usual Monday suspects. NBC's American Ninja Warrior (1.4/1.7) and Running Wild (1.0) had particular crashes, dropping all the way to low-end levels after two very strong weeks since the Olympics.
  • ABC's Bachelor in Paradise (1.5/1.4) and Mistresses (0.5) each had slight downticks in their final Monday airings of the season. Both shows will conclude their seasons tonight.
  • And it was a bad night for So You Think You Can Dance (0.6/0.5) even by its low standards.
  • CBS' comedy repeats (1.0/0.8/0.9/0.7) improved only slightly with The Big Bang Theory's return to the lineup at 8:00 and 9:00. The CW offered two more doses of Supergirl (0.3/0.3).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 8/29/16

FINALS UPDATE: Scorpion (R) (0.6) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • A pretty steady Monday night in the prelims:
    • NBC: American Ninja Warrior (1.9) & Running Wild (1.4)
    • ABC: Bachelor in Paradise (1.6) & Mistresses (0.6)
    • CBS: repeats of comedies (0.8/0.7/0.8/0.7) and Scorpion (0.7)
    • Fox: So You Think You Can Dance (0.7)
    • CW: Supergirl repeats (0.3/0.3)

Spotted Ratings, Monday 8/22/16

FINALS UPDATE: American Ninja Warrior (2.0) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Life after the Olympics began on NBC with a very stout return from American Ninja Warrior (1.8/2.1), which has at least tied and maybe beaten its previous season high. It was also at least three tenths above its final pre-Olympics episode. Running Wild (1.3) also looked solid at 10/9c, improving by two tenths on its Monday rating before the Olympics.
  • The end of the Olympics was also good news for ABC, where Bachelor in Paradise (1.6) surged to its own new season high in the first two hours. It had about the same Plus as last season's 1.8 high (which happened to occur on this evening a year ago). At 10/9c, Mistresses (0.6) got a minor rebound but was still thoroughly unimpressive.
  • Fox was the loser among the original networks with So You Think You Can Dance (0.7/0.6), back from two weeks off and at best tying its pre-Olympics level.
  • CBS had more comedy repeats (0.8/0.8/0.8/0.8) and Scorpion (0.6), and the CW had more Supergirl (0.3/0.2).

Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 8/9/16

FINALS UPDATE: Summer Olympics (10.0) adjusted up and MADtv (0.2) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • With a lot of swimming and the women's gymnastics team finals, the opening Tuesday has been the high point of the last two Summer Olympics. And it could happen again this year, as the Games surged to a 9.9 rating in Tuesday's prelims and could break double digits after finals. The 9.9 would still be down a little over 20% from this night in 2012.
  • The Games also had less broadcast competition, as ABC's Bachelor in Paradise dipped to 1.1 on its second night, while the return of post-show After Paradise (0.5) and 10/9c comedy repeats (0.3/0.3) were weak options later in the night.
  • On CBS, Zoo (0.6) got its first dose of Olympic competition and fell to a new low, surrounded by NCIS franchise repeats (0.7/0.5). The CW's MADtv clung to another 0.3, now leading out of a The Flash repeat (0.3). And Fox began its late-summer Tuesday repeat lineup of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (0.4), New Girl (0.3) and Lucifer (0.3).

Spotted Ratings, Monday 8/1/16

FINALS UPDATE: Supergirl (R) (0.3) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC dominated the final pre-Olympics Monday with a vintage spike for the two-hour finale of The Bachelorette (2.5) and 'After the Final Rose' (2.3) at 10/9c. Both of these matched last year's final telecasts, capping off a season that has been very close to dead even in raw numbers pretty much all summer.
  • A steady American Ninja Warrior (1.6) led into the return of Running Wild with Bear Grylls (1.1) at 10/9c, just a tenth below its mid-July opener last year, while Fox stayed in the reality cellar with another 0.7 from So You Think You Can Dance.
  • It was actually a pretty interesting night in repeat land, as CBS installed its two-hour Monday comedy block (0.8/0.7/0.7/0.6) with Scorpion (0.6) at 10/9c. Meanwhile, the CW began an over two-month run of Monday Supergirl double-pumps (0.4/0.5). Those ratings would be great if they hold in finals, but apparently the network was preempted.
