FINALS UPDATE: Man with a Plan (R) (0.6) and Stanley Cup Finals (1.7) adjusted up while The Crossing (0.4) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • With an American Idol taking up its usual spot on the last Monday of the regular season, The Bachelorette was left with Memorial Day for its season premiere (1.4). It was significantly below last year's 1.8 premiere, but the more appropriate comparison is to last year's Memorial Day episode (1.5) which makes it look much more reasonable.
  • NBC had game one of the Stanley Cup Finals (1.6/1.6/1.5). It was very close to last year's 1.7 opener, despite facing huge competition from Game 7 of the NBA's Western Conference Finals on TNT.
  • Elsewhere, quite a few dramas from regular season Mondays continued into the summer. That included a mostly ignored one-time return for Lucifer (0.5/0.5), unloading two leftover episodes that would've been incorporated into a season four. ABC's The Crossing (0.5), CBS' Elementary (down a tenth to 0.4) and the CW's Supergirl (0.4) and season finale of iZombie (0.2) were also back.

FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (R) (1.1) and Man with a Plan (1.0) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Recently axed Lucifer (0.8) became the second show in as many days to end its season on an uptick in the midst of a huge online fan campaign. It was the show's first trip back to 0.8 since late March. Lead-out The Resident (0.9) also ended its season well.
  • CBS plugged in a repeat of The Big Bang Theory (1.0) at 8/7c, keeping Man with a Plan at 0.9 while Superior Donuts (0.9) joined in on the post-cancellation upswing trend in a big way. (It was the first 0.9 for Donuts since early March.) Elementary had 0.6 for the third week in a row at 10/9c.
  • Reality staples The Voice (1.6) and Dancing with the Stars (1.1/1.0) were even to slightly up, while the 10/9c lead-outs Running Wild (0.8) and The Crossing (0.5) were slightly down and even. The CW stayed on the high end of its spring levels with Supergirl (0.5) and freshly renewed iZombie (0.3).

FINALS UPDATE: Dancing with the Stars (1.0), Man with a Plan (0.9), The Voice (1.5) and Supergirl (0.5) adjusted up while The Resident (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Guest spots from Chris Rock and Adam Sandler brought the still not-yet-renewed Kevin Can Wait back up to 1.0 for its second season finale. But the momentum did not extend later in the night, as Man with a Plan (0.8) and Superior Donuts (0.7) stayed even. (Both will be original again next week following a The Big Bang Theory repeat.) Elementary (0.6) was also steady.
  • NBC had the return of Running Wild with Bear Grylls (0.9), which is back on a regularly-scheduled basis for the first time in two years. It matched last week's Good Girls finale, but The Voice (1.4/1.5) gave back all of its uptick from last week.
  • Fox's Lucifer (0.7) and The Resident (0.9) were both on the rebound after last week's lows. On ABC, the second week of Dancing with the Stars (0.9/1.0) was down a tenth or two from last week's premiere, while The Crossing (0.5) matched last week. And the CW's iZombie (0.3) is hoping for an uptick as a final decision on its fate awaits.

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (1.7) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Dancing with the Stars (1.2/1.1) made a much later than usual appearance on the spring scene, opening up a four-week May sweeps event. Based on the premiere ratings, that reduction was warranted; it was barely over half of last spring's 2.1 premiere. Maybe that comparison is a bit unfair since that premiere was late March rather than the end of April, but it's still way down in Plus from the 1.6ish it was doing at this time a year ago.
    • It also dealt a seeming death blow to genre lead-out The Crossing (0.5), which had been holding up OK after Idol but collapsed by two precious tenths this week.
  • DWTS' arrival was seemingly a good thing for The Voice (1.6), which was up at least a tenth from last week, while the Good Girls season finale (0.9) preliminarily matched last week.
  • But it was a mostly down night for the scripted options elsewhere. CBS' Kevin Can Wait (0.8) and Superior Donuts (0.7) are eyeing new lows, sandwiching an even Man with a Plan (0.8). Elementary (0.6) took over for a mostly-summer run in the 10/9c hour and was a notch below Scorpion's season low.
  • Fox's Lucifer (0.6) and The Resident (0.8) were also down a tenth, though CW's Supergirl (0.5) bucked the trend and eked out an uptick.

FINALS UPDATE: The Resident (0.9) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • American Idol (1.3/1.4) drew closer than ever to The Voice (1.5) on Monday, though that was more about The Voice than Idol; preliminarily, it was down a whooping three tenths week-to-week, while Idol was close to even. 10/9c dramas The Crossing (0.7) and Good Girls (0.9) matched last week's finals.
  • CBS' originals took the night off in favor of Sheldon-verse repeats (1.0/1.0/1.0/1.0), which as always meant better ratings than the usual occupants. A Carpool Karaoke special (0.8) also improved the 10/9c hour vs. last week's Scorpion finale. Elsewhere, Fox's The Resident (0.8) along with CW's Supergirl (0.4) and iZombie (0.2) ticked down.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 4/16/18

FINALS UPDATE: American Idol (1.4) and The Voice (1.8) adjusted up while Good Girls (0.9) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox dramas Lucifer (0.7) and The Resident (0.9) were back from multiple weeks off, with the latter impressing once again, while the CW's Supergirl did well to hold onto a 0.5 in its first episode in over two months. Preliminarily, it also brought iZombie (0.3) up a notch with it.
  • The Monday reality staples were both down, but NBC's The Voice (1.8/1.7) pulled a little farther ahead of ABC's American Idol (1.3/1.4). The same was true in the 10/9c drama duel as Good Girls looks to hold onto another 1.0 while The Crossing (0.7) inched down again in week three.
  • CBS' Kevin Can Wait (0.9) and Man with a Plan (0.8) ticked down, while Superior Donuts (0.8) and Living Biblically (0.6) were even. Scorpion (0.7) also matched last week as it wrapped up for the season, with an uncertain future awaiting.

FINALS UPDATE: American Idol (1.7) and The Good Doctor (1.7) adjusted up while Good Girls (0.9) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The Good Doctor finished off a huge season one by upticking to 1.7, matching its lead-in from American Idol (1.7) which was also up from last week. Their gains were NBC's losses, as The Voice (2.0) took a sizable hit and Good Girls (0.9) also dropped a tenth at 10/9c.
  • The other three networks were all virtually even with last week, the one exception being CBS' lead-off comedy Kevin Can Wait (0.9) which went fractional for the first time.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 3/19/18

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week two for the pairing of American Idol (1.6) and The Good Doctor (1.6) saw both shows down two tenths. The pairing fell a bit farther behind NBC as The Voice (2.2/2.3) was down a tenth or two and Good Girls (1.0) looks like a decent bet to match last week after finals.
  • Fox had a nice night as Lucifer (0.8) and The Resident (0.9) picked up a precious tenth, but CBS was on the downswing with its first three comedies (1.0/0.9/0.8) and even with Living Biblically (0.7) and Scorpion (0.8). The CW's iZombie ticked back down to 0.2.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 3/12/18

FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (2.4) and iZombie (0.3) adjusted up while Good Girls (1.0) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • At least for one Monday, there was room for both The Voice (2.3) and American Idol (1.8) to do their respective things, as Voice was nicked only a bit vs. last Monday while Idol shed a half point vs. Sunday's premiere. The 10/9c hour took a major turn in ABC's direction as The Good Doctor (1.8) had an enormous recovery from its 1.3 low two weeks ago. NBC's Good Girls, which actually beat Good Doc head-to-head two weeks ago, dropped another two tenths to 1.1 in week three.
  • CBS was mostly repeats, but originals of Man with a Plan (1.0) and Living Biblically (0.7) both matched last week. (Their repeat lead-ins also matched what Kevin Can Wait and Superior Donuts did in the timeslots last week.) Fox's The Resident (0.8) gave back its uptick from last week.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 3/5/18

FINALS UPDATE: Superior Donuts (0.9) and The Voice (2.5) adjusted up.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week two of NBC's Good Girls (1.3) held up pretty well, staying ahead of The Brave's track as that show fell to a 1.1 in week two. (However, the 1.5 -> 1.1 half-hour drop looks pretty severe...) Its lead-in The Voice (2.4/2.5) continued to look healthy, comparing nicely with the 2.7 in week two of last season.
  • A disappointing season of The Bachelor got some consolation at the end, as the three-hour season finale (2.2) took a particularly large jump to well within season high territory. It was still a bigger than league average drop from last season's two-hour finale (2.7), but it was the show's healthiest trend this season.
  • On Fox, there was some interesting separation as Lucifer dipped to a rather underwhelming 0.7 but The Resident (0.9) actually perked up in its second episode back from hiatus.
  • CBS was almost completely even with last week, the only exception being a one-tenth dip for week two of Living Biblically (0.7) which put it at the low end of 9JKL's ratings in the slot. On the CW, iZombie (0.2) shed a tenth in week two.

Spotted Ratings, Monday 2/26/18

FINALS UPDATE: Kevin Can Wait (1.1) and The Voice (2.8) adjusted up while Superior Donuts (0.8) adjusted down.

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Life after the Olympics began on NBC with a strong start for the spring season of The Voice (2.7/2.8), which topped the 2.6 fall premiere and was even to slightly up in Plus vs. last spring's 3.1 premiere. At 10/9c, new drama Good Girls (1.5) was not exactly stellar, but it was a couple tenths above where fall drama The Brave started here, and within a tenth of the Taken premiere on this night a year ago.
  • Coming back from Olympics hiatus, it was a fairly sluggish night for all the usual Monday scripted staples. Kevin Can Wait (1.0) was at a new low leading off for CBS, though Man with a Plan (1.0) and Superior Donuts (0.9) were not hit quite as hard. At 9:30, new comedy Living Biblically basically looked like a typical 9JKL episode, which is not a good place to be on series premiere night. Scorpion was close to normal with a 0.8 at 10/9c.
  • On ABC, The Good Doctor (1.3) took a big hit at 10/9c leading out of The Bachelor (1.7/1.8). The Resident (0.8) also took a sizable drop in its return from hiatus, though it still matched its lead-in from Lucifer (0.8).
  • And the 9/8c slot on the CW went to veteran iZombie (0.3), which was down a tenth from last season's premiere but a tenth better than what Valor has been doing all season in the hour. It led out of Legends of Tomorrow (0.4), which couldn't bounce back from last week's low.

FINALS UPDATE: Man with a Plan (1.1), 9JKL (0.9), Scorpion (0.8) and The Resident (1.1) adjusted up.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • On Super Monday, NBC saw big bounces for its Monday unscripted finales of The Wall (1.5) and Better Late Than Never (1.1), which both hit season highs. However, there was little interest in a Winter Olympics preview special at 10/9c (0.6).
    • It was also a nice night on Fox, as Lucifer (1.0) finally woke up a bit from a recent slump and The Resident (1.0) also upticked to match its timeslot premiere two weeks ago.
    • Top-rated ABC also an uptick with The Bachelor (1.8), while The Good Doctor (1.7) was even after a week off. Supergirl (0.6) stayed at last week's high-end levels on the CW.
    • CBS was the only network without any upward movement, and Scorpion (0.7) got slammed at 10/9c against Good Doc's return. Earlier in the night, Kevin Can Wait (1.2) was steady, Man with a Plan (1.0) narrowly down, Superior Donuts (1.0) even, and the 9JKL finale (0.8) down.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/29/18

FINALS UPDATE: 9JKL (0.9) adjusted up.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Fox's The Resident (0.9) was down another tenth in its third episode, but that kept it ahead of its lead-in Lucifer (0.8) which shed a tenth of its own.
    • On CBS, the lead-off hour of Kevin Can Wait (1.2) and Man with a Plan (1.1) was down a notch, but 9JKL (0.9) and Scorpion (0.9) both picked up a tenth. And it was a high-end night for Supergirl (0.6) on the CW.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/22/18

FINALS UPDATE: The Brave (0.7) adjusted up.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Fox's medical drama The Resident (1.0) had a less-than-promising start in its regular Monday 9/8c timeslot, shedding over 60% of its Sunday preview audience and starting out well below last year's ultimately failed 24: Legacy and APB. It led out of Lucifer (0.9), which was back to normal-ish after some recent stumbles.
    • ABC's Monday lead grew as The Bachelor (1.8/1.7) and The Good Doctor (1.7) were very close to last week.
    • On CBS, the 8/7c hour remained strong with Kevin Can Wait (1.3) and Man with a Plan (1.2) matching last week, but Superior Donuts (1.0) gave up a tenth and 9JKL (0.8) tanked by two. Scorpion (0.8) also dropped a notch.
    • NBC had a similar story with The Wall (1.2) even but Better Late than Never (0.9) and The Brave (0.6) giving back some of their recent surges. And the CW's Supergirl (0.5) was back to normal after last week's 0.6.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 1/1/18

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • 2018 began with a big night for the College Football Playoff on ESPN, but most of the broadcasters brought back their regular lineups anyway. That turned out to be a pretty rough decision across the board. ABC was of course on top with the return of The Bachelor (1.5), but it was down roughly 30% from last year's 2.1 opener.
    • NBC and Fox fought for the rest of the original scraps, with NBC airing The Wall (0.8) and two hours of Better Late than Never (0.7) while Fox hit new lows with dramas Lucifer (0.7) and The Gifted (0.7). CBS eked out second place despite staying in repeat mode thanks to The Big Bang Theory (1.1) and a triple-header of Young Sheldon (1.0/0.9/0.9).

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • Numbers and analysis coming shortly.

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 12/4/17

FINALS UPDATE: The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.0), The Good Doctor (1.6), The Voice (1.8) and The Wall Special (0.9) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • A repeat of The Big Bang Theory (1.2) filled in for Kevin Can Wait and helped keep the original Man with a Plan at 1.1 at 8:30. However, Superior Donuts (0.9) and 9JKL (0.8) each shed a tenth in the 9:00 hour.
    • On Fox, The Gifted (0.8) is clearly limping to the finish late in the fall, losing another tenth after last week's preemption. Lucifer held at 0.9.
    • Pending a Monday Night Football preemption in Pittsburgh, ABC finished up The Good Doctor's fall run (1.7), leading out of the return of The Great Christmas Light Fight (1.1/1.2) in the first two hours. Light Fight had a 1.1 all three weeks last year and should be very close to that even with a finals drop. NBC's The Voice (1.8/1.9) and The Wall (1.0) are also pending an MNF preemption in Cincinnati.

FINALS UPDATE: The Good Doctor (1.8), Kevin Can Wait (1.2) and Man with a Plan (1.0) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • ABC's Dancing with the Stars (1.4/1.5) and The Good Doctor (1.9) along with the early part of the CBS lineup (1.4/1.2/1.0/0.8/0.9) are pending Monday Night Football preemptions.
    • It was a down night for the other half of the big four, with The Voice (1.7) taking a tumble while dramas The Brave, Lucifer and The Gifted all lost a tenth to 0.9. The CW was steady with Supergirl (0.5) and Valor (0.2).

    Spotted Ratings, Monday 11/13/17

FINALS UPDATE: Kevin Can Wait (1.3), The Voice (2.0) and The Gifted (1.0) adjusted up while Dancing with the Stars (1.4) adjusted down.

    WHAT MATTERS:
    • CBS made yet another change on Monday with the return of Man with a Plan (1.0) at 8:30. Despite an impressive lead-in from Kevin Can Wait (1.3), MwaP tied its lowest raw rating from last season, and looked a bit weaker in Plus than the fall episodes last season. With its third different lead-in in as many weeks, Superior Donuts (0.9) shed a tenth, putting it squarely between its premiere rating after 9JKL but a tick below what it did after a repeat of The Big Bang Theory last week.
    •  The Good Doctor (1.9) was back at huge levels after last week's preemption and seemingly helped drag Dancing with the Stars (1.4) upward with it.
    • With the exception of Valor (0.2), which gave back last week's uptick, everything else on broadcast matched last week.
