WHAT MATTERS:
- Two years after its last premiere, Adult Swim cartoon Rick and Morty (1.48) returned with a breakout performance on Sunday, exploding to 44% above its 2015 premiere and 32% above its series high (which was a 1.12 in the second episode of last season). 1.48 is great, but like all things Adult Swim, it is far more impressive in the even younger adult demos; it averaged a 1.94 in A18-34, which is well within megahit territory by broadcast standards.
These numbers are current through Monday, November 21.
WHAT MATTERS:
- News events caused USA Network to bump its Ryan Philippe drama Shooter to the fall, and it opened last Tuesday with a 0.50 demo rating. This is a better raw rating than the last two dramas to launch after the WWE SmackDown franchise: Colony in January (0.44) and Queen of the South in June (0.45). However, SmackDown (which recently relocated to Tuesday) was also a lot stronger itself... it averaged a 0.96 leading into Shooter after getting roughly a 0.7 for those other two launches. So it may be a little premature to say that Shooter did way better. However, it did seem like a pretty good demographic fit with the wrestling, skewing sharply male at 59%.
These numbers are current through Thursday, January 7.
WHAT MATTERS:
- MTV became the latest network to seek out its own Game of Thrones-esque franchise by premiering The Shannara Chronicles (0.48), an adaptation of a Terry Brooks novel, to relatively middling results. It led out of Teen Wolf (0.46) and had what seems like a pretty similar rating. But when breaking it down by gender, it's clear that this show brought a different audience to the table. It dropped from Teen Wolf's females 18-49 rating (from 0.57 to 0.45) and bled even more steeply in the usual MTV target of F12-34 (retaining less than half at 0.49 vs. 1.00). But it built noticeably in M18-49 (0.36 -> 0.51) and older demos.
- As for Teen Wolf, it didn't air during the winter last year, so its y2y comparisons will be vs. summer 2015. Its 0.46 was down 25% from the June 29 premiere.

WHAT MATTERS:
- The Voice got a fairly typical 10%ish week-to-week bump for its performance finale. This result was a few ticks below the fall performance finale (4.2 on 12/17/12) but about in line with last spring's final ep (3.8 on 5/7/12). Week two of The Winner Is preview became the latest week two grower among the summer entries, up by a tick.
- Last week's second ep grower Mistresses, however, gave back the growth in week three and returned to its premiere level.
- The Stanley Cup Finals moved to cabler NBCSN for Games 2 and 3. Monday's Game 3 had 4.00m viewers and a 1.6 demo rating. Haven't seen a Game 2 demo yet but the viewership was almost identical (3.96m).
- TNT had a second straight night of distressing post-premiere drops as Major Crimes (0.7) and King & Maxwell (0.4) each shed a couple ticks, and MTV's Teen Wolf (0.7) also took a dive.
WHAT MATTERS:
- NBC introduced its final new The Voice lead-out of the season, singing game show The Winner Is, which rated just a bit below recent Revolution episodes. It gets another try next week and then looks to fend for itself on Thursdays later in the summer.
- ABC's Mistresses began its effort to come back from last week's disappointing premiere by surprisingly growing a couple ticks in week two, to a level ABC could potentially live with... if it stays here.
- And here are some notables from a very eventful Monday in cable:
