FINALS UPDATE: NASCAR (0.7) adjusted up while
The Wall (0.2) adjusted down.
FINALS UPDATE: NASCAR Overrun (1.0) and
Bob's Burgers (R)
(0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- The season finale of American Idol (1.0) matched last week, leading out of an at-home edition of America's Funniest Home Videos (0.7). A Taylor Swift concert special at 10/9c (0.5) lagged behind recent episodes of The Rookie.
- It was also finale night for Fox's cartoons (0.6/0.4/0.5/0.5), which were mostly up a tenth from last week and may have gotten a little indirect help from the return of NASCAR in the late afternoon on the net.
- On CBS, Mission Impossible (0.5/0.4/0.4) was the lowest-rated of CBS' three movie nights thus far. NBC got no interest in the Beverly Hills Dog Show (0.3), surrounded by Little Big Shots (0.3) at 7/6c and The Wall (0.3) at 10/9c. And CW finale night saw Supergirl edge back up to 0.2, leading out of Batwoman (0.2).
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS: New Orleans (0.6) adjusted up while
The Rookie (R)
(0.3) and
Supergirl (R)
(0.0) adjusted down.
FINALS UPDATE: Little Big Shots (0.3),
The Simpsons (R)
(0.2) and
Bob's Burgers (R)
(0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- In the usual Academy of Country Music Awards slot, CBS went with a more socially distant two-hour ACM special (1.0) which was close to 40% below last year's ACM Awards ratings. At 10/9c, the network replayed the Wednesday Garth Brooks/Trisha Yearwood special (0.7) and got nearly the same demo as the original run.
- The CBS competition may have slightly dented ABC's American Idol (1.2), but the net still won each hour head-to-head, including a steady return for The Rookie (0.8) at 10/9c. NBC (0.4/0.5/0.4/0.4) was low but mostly even with last week, the exception being Good Girls which dropped a tenth.
FINALS UPDATE: The iHeart Living Room Concert for America (1.5, +0.2) adjusted up while
The Simpsons (R)
(0.4) and
Family Guy (R)
(0.5) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Fox jumped into contention on Sunday with benefit special The iHeart Living Room Concert for America (1.3/1.4), narrowly topping American Idol (1.3) head-to-head in the 9:00 hour.
- On CBS, 60 Minutes (1.0) was down a bit leading into the return of God Friended Me (0.6) at 8/7c, but the NCIS spin-offs (0.7) stayed strong in the second half of the night.
- NBC dramas Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (0.4) and Good Girls (0.5) were even, but their unscripted lead-ins Little Big Shots (0.4) and The Wall (0.5) lost some juice earlier in the night.
FINALS UPDATE: The Neighborhood (R)
(0.6) and
Little Big Shots (0.8) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC had an all-unscripted start to its spring Mondays as the season premiere of The Voice (1.5/1.6) was down in Plus from the 2.1 premiere last spring, and a bit below the 1.7 fall premiere. It led into a preview of Little Big Shots (0.9) now hosted by Melissa McCarthy, which will return to its longtime Sunday 8/7c timeslot later this week.
- ABC's The Bachelor (1.9) tied its season high and was up from the year-ago Voice premiere night, but The Good Doctor (0.8) fell at 10/9c. Fox's 9-1-1: Lone Star (0.9) is eyeing a new series low, while the CW's All American (0.3) preliminarily continued its recent 0.3 streak.
Little Big Shots
Sundays, 7/6c, NBC
FINALS UPDATE: The Four (0.8) adjusted down.
FINALS UPDATE: Young Sheldon (R)
(0.9) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- CBS' Big Brother (1.3) rebounded significantly from the July 4th low, but was down a notch from last Thursday and posted another sharp year-to-year decline. (The show got a 1.9 on this night a year ago.)
- Fox's repeat week continued with an encore of The Four (0.5), and that may have helped some of the unscripted competition a bit as Little Big Shots (0.8) and The Gong Show (0.6) both inched up. Later in the night, NBC was even with Marlon (0.6/0.6) as was ABC with Match Game (0.7) and Take Two (0.4).
FINALS UPDATE: Big Brother (1.4) adjusted up while
Take Two (0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Full table will be posted next week.
WHAT MATTERS:- It was a rough start for ABC's summer Thursday lineup. 10/9c drama Take Two (0.5) skewed old and could only tie the premieres of last summer's drama failures Still Star-Crossed and Somewhere Between. And sophomore reality series The Gong Show (0.5), now at 8/7c, was massively below last year's 0.9 premiere (though it did fall as low as 0.5 for its finale last summer).
- The bright spot in the bunch was returning game show Match Game (0.7), which was actually up from the last three times we saw it in the winter (two of which were against the Olympics).
- Week two for the NBC lineup saw Little Big Shots (0.7) and the 9/8c edition of Marlon (0.6) each lose a tenth, but Marlon stayed at 0.6 at 9:30. The Four (0.7) was even for Fox.
FINALS UPDATE: The Big Bang Theory (R)
(1.0) adjusted up.
WHAT MATTERS:- NBC's Little Big Shots (0.8) and Marlon (0.7/0.6) returned for a five-week run together on Thursday. LBS returned at the same 0.8 with which it limped through most of April, and Marlon was far behind its reasonably successful first season in the late summer of last year (when it had mostly low-1's leading out of low-2's from America's Got Talent).
- The only other broadcast original was The Four (0.7) which matched last week's premiere in rounded numbers. But the preliminary hours (0.6/0.7) were both down a tenth, so it's definitely a weaker 0.7.
FINALS UPDATE: Superstore (R)
(0.5) adjusted up while
This Is Us (R)
(0.4),
Arrow (R)
(0.1) and
Legends of Tomorrow (R)
(0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- With sports competition out of the way, it was a bounce-back Wednesday for Fox's MasterChef (1.1) and The F Word (0.8). However, that still leaves F Word at two tenths behind its premiere rating, and noticeably weaker than the MasterChef lead-in.
- On NBC, Little Big Shots posted another 1.1 to end its three-week summer run, making way for spin-off Forever Young next week. The Carmichael Show was also even with a 0.8.
- The other three networks stayed in full repeat mode, including the Wednesday 9:30 debut of American Housewife (0.7) which matched its Modern Family lead-in (0.7). An encore of Steve Harvey's Funderdome (0.6) filled in at 10/9c, and the alphabet will add an original hour here with To Tell the Truth starting next Wednesday.
FINALS UPDATE: NBA Finals (7.2) and
The Carmichael Show (0.8) adjusted up while
Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night (1.1),
NBA Countdown (1.7) and
The F Word (0.7) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- ABC looks to be headed for another stellar ratings result with Game 3 of the NBA Finals (5.9). Last year, Game 3 averaged a 5.2 prelim and adjusted up to a 6.1 final. The game result was not so welcome for ABC; a 3-0 Warriors lead means the series could still end as early as this Friday.
- The NBA bomb dropped right into week two of the Fox vs. NBC summer programming battle, and led to a bunch of drops. Fox's MasterChef (0.9) and The F Word (0.8) were each down two tenths from last week. NBC's Little Big Shots (1.1) was the most resilient of the bunch, but its lead-out The Carmichael Show (0.7) was down two tenths from last week's 9:00 episode. Superstore repeats (0.5) took over at 9:30 after Carmichael.
FINALS UPDATE: Modern Family (R)
(0.7) and
MasterChef (1.1) adjusted up while
Little Big Shots (1.1),
The Carmichael Show (0.7),
This Is Us (R)
(0.5),
The F Word (1.0),
Arrow (R)
(0.2) and
Legends of Tomorrow (R)
(0.2) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:- Wednesday provided the first big head-to-head battle of summer programming, as Fox's MasterChef returned (1.0) with about a league average decline from last year's 1.2 premiere. It led into a nice start for the latest newbie from Gordon Ramsay, The F Word (1.1).
- On NBC, Little Big Shots (1.2) kicked off a three-week summer run at close to its typical Sunday spring level, and was reunited with its spring 2016 lead-out, comedy The Carmichael Show (0.9/0.8). After some really ugly results late last season, Carmichael was able to get back to around the same kind of level it was doing early in season two. This Is Us encores took over in the Wednesday 10/9c hour (0.6).
FINALS UPDATE: NCIS: Los Angeles (1.2) adjusted up while
The Simpsons (R)
(0.4) adjusted down.
WHAT MATTERS:
- ABC featured the two-hour Not-So-Final Battle on Once Upon a Time (0.9), leading out of a retrospective special (0.8) at 7/6c. It was three tenths behind the year-ago finale but up a tenth from last week's musical. Then came another episode of Match Game (0.6) in the 10/9c hour, which fell to tie the low point from its 9/8c run.
- With its fate still inexplicably up in the air, Chicago Justice (1.1) aired another episode at 9/8c and was on the upswing. Its lead-in Little Big Shots (1.3) and lead-out Shades of Blue (0.9) were also up, with Shades a particular highlight in hitting its best rating since week two of the season.
- Fox's comedies took the night off in favor of Miss USA (0.6/0.9). It took a brutal year-to-year drop in its second year on Fox, after averaging a 1.2 in June a year ago.
- And CBS had its own upticks in the first half of the night with 60 Minutes (1.0) and NCIS: Los Angeles (1.1), while Madam Secretary (0.7) and Elementary (0.6) were even.
