The Breakdown: CBS Friday in 2016-17 (MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, Blue Bloods)

It's time for a journey through the CBS Friday schedule in 2016-17...

One of the most eye-popping moments of the 2016-17 season was MacGyver's 1.7 demo on Premiere Friday. Mac didn't end up being quite the Friday revolution that seemed possible on that night, but it still had an absolutely astounding impact on its compatible lead-out, the veteran Hawaii Five-0. And even old reliable Blue Bloods was basically even in raw numbers during this period.

The growth became a little less ridiculous in the winter months, when historically Undercover Boss usually came in and helped provide a winter bounce. Instead of the winter bounce, all three shows averaged a bit below their fall levels here. But they were all still up, and Five-0 was still the standout.

Undercover Boss filled in after MacGyver wrapped in mid-April, and the other two procedurals were much closer to even.

MacGyver: It's a little front-loaded, but even on the 1.7 premiere night I think CBS would've been pretty happy if you said it would settle at 1.1ish. It didn't get that much weaker on a True basis after November sweeps or so. I think this is the biggest Friday newbie in the A18-49+ era? Perhaps I am being a bit kind here because my expectations were low before the season, but this goes down as a big win. Grade: A-.

Hawaii Five-0: I'm a bit hesitant here because the growth can be pinned on MacGyver and it was, like Mac, kinda front-loaded. Still, in the end it was the only broadcast series to finish up in raw, and Friday scripted shows haven't made it to these levels since Law and Order: SVU in the early aughts, so what the heck. Grade: A.

Blue Bloods: Basically the same as Five-0 but on a slightly less incredible level for this individual season. Grade: A-. Will one or more of these shows make a run at league average ratings next season? The spring trends and Five-0's cast turnover suggest it could be difficult, but they're not far away at this point...
