Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 9/11/12

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC's opening Tuesday, for my money, went a little better than its opening Monday.
    • The Voice retained almost all of its Monday premiere numbers; that's not a huge win considering there was so much less competition, but it still seems good.
    • Go On looked pretty solid on its official premiere night, dropping not that much from a low-4's Voice at 8:30. This was a pretty typical performance for an NBC comedy premiere with a good lead-in. You can spin that positively in that it was actually a second episode (sort of), or you can spin that negatively in that look what happened to all those other shows!
    • The New Normal was again the most "meh," posting the same number as on the previous night when it had a much bigger lead-in yet much more competition.
    • Parenthood returned with pretty much the same middling performance it always has; that number was down three tenths from the year-ago premiere and basically right in line with last season's average.
  • As mentioned, there was a lot less going on with the other networks on this Tuesday. So You Think You Can Dance hit the same rating it's gotten each of the last three weeks despite a special night.
  • The summer of the serialized cable drama appears to be continuing into the fall as Sons of Anarchy (2.8) kicked off season five at 0.3 ahead of its previous high (2.5 for the season four premiere). If the last few Sons seasons are any indication, it's gonna settle at about a half point below that, but it suddenly looks a little less unreasonable to predict that the show could regularly beat all the broadcasters this fall.

The Voice = not good ratings. I expected full point higher, at Monday because of premiere factor, Tuesday because of no competition.

Go On = OK ratings. Should stabilize at some 2.0 with a fall average nearing 2.5 (not counting Olympic sneak peek in it). Not a hit, yet no-brainer renewal with season average over 2.0.

The New Normal = meh. Not Free Agents bad ... but bellow all other recent NBC fall comedy premieres. Then I see it stabilizing only at around 1.5 for 1.75 fall average. If it gets back 9, it'll still need unlikely 2nd half bounce back for renewal. Or most of other new comedies flopping for TNN to get pity renewal. So almost surely one and done.

Wow, that's a good one for Sons. I'm slightly surprised because the critical voices seem to be cooling on it after last year's finale.

I agree, and I've felt that way about True Blood for a couple seasons, yet it too has remained remarkably sturdy.
