The Question, Tuesday 10/14/14: Will Audiences Say "I Do" to Marry Me?

The 20th and final leg of our 30-day The Question marathon is NBC's biggest comedy hope of the fall, Marry Me. It doesn't have an obvious built-in advantage like Matthew Perry in Go On, or even a connection to a well-known movie like About a Boy. So if Marry Me is going to thrive where those have turned out mediocre, it will be because of quality. But coming from the creator of well-regarded Happy Endings, it might actually have a shot to do that. Will audiences say "I do" to Marry Me? That's The Question for Tuesday, October 14, 2014.

About a Boy Last Season
2.3 (pilot encore, 2/25/14) (3.7 The Voice)
2.5 (timeslot premiere, 3/4/14) (4.1 The Voice)
1.88 (average of 11 direct post-Voice episodes)

I doubt that this show will draw a huge crowd on its own, but I don't see it being a huge turn-off to The Voice's audience either. The Voice will likely be a bit lower as a lead-in than it was for AaB's launch on March 4, but About a Boy may have premiered a bit higher if not for the post-Olympic preview and the last-minute encore on 2/25. I'm assuming this means Marry Me will start in the general area where AaB premiered.

Over/Under: 2.55.

I gotta say Over.

It's not a presold concept, so it'll have to cling on through retention. Not sure I'm buying that. Under.

Over.

I think it will premiere in high 2s.
With that good The Voice lead-in I'd expect Marry Me to stay at 2.0+ rating for more than few episodes, and that leads me to believe it would premiere well above 2.0. Though not as high as 3.0.

UNDER.

1.9

Over, but I really need to stop being so optimistic.

The thing is that there is no real precedent for this premiere. Go On, About a Boy, and Growing Up Fisher had Olympic previews before airing after the Voice. The New Normal weirdly premiered Mondays at 10. And About a Boy and Growing Up Fisher had random repeats of their previews first. No comedy has ever gone post Voice without a some sort of preview.
Anyways, New Girl pulled off a 2.8 against Go On 2 years ago, but it can pull maybe half that now. ABC no longer has a comedy block. So, I'm optimistic. People only have 30 minutes to fly away. Optimism strikes again, OVER

Out of the all the Questions asked, this is by far the hardest. Marry Me, while having endless summer promotion and the leading lady being one of the best characters in Gone Girl, as well as getting the second-best lead-in of the network...but it is a brand new property, is from the creator and star of a short-lived series, and has no special preview, as well as a weaker Voice overall, and this is a comedy on NBC. This is the first time I'm doing a coin flip.

...

Well, I'm going Over. Luck be a lady tonight.

Maybe it's just because I find the commercials for this show incredibly grating, but I'm really not feeling optimistic. Under with a 2.4.

Under. I think. Maybe. I hope.

Under. 2.5

I really want this show to succeed and let this be the year of Penny. But The Voice is a lot weaker in the 8-9pm slot based on 1/2 hour dalies I've seen - I can't see it stronger than a 3.6/3.7 best case tonight. Marry Me would need 70% retention or about to break the threshold. Pains me to say it but...

Under.

Over, just because I want this to succeed. Worked for me on the Jane question yesterday, will work again now.....right?

Knowing that the female lead played Noelle in Gone Girl has made me suddenly interested in giving this a shot (was never a viewer of Happy Endings)

But in my mind, 2.6 sounds a tenth or two too high. Under

Under. I'm looking forward to this show, but I don't see it premiering over 2.5 (I'll be gladly surprise if it does)

Spot said...

Under. I don't see it outrating About a Boy. 2.3.

Spot said...

Slighty under, I expect it to do about a 2.4/2.5

Spot said...

Over! Hope viewers check out the funny premiere of Marry Me.

Spot said...

Over. I think Voice retention is good for a 2.6+.

Over 2.55!

over. 2.7
