First Two Weeks, Trophy Wife

WEEK ONE
A half hour after ABC's enormous Agents of SHIELD premiere came to an end, ABC premiered new comedy Trophy Wife. It averaged a 2.3 demo, down about a quarter from its The Goldbergs lead-in (3.1). It beat competing comedy The Mindy Project (1.5) rather convincingly and also faced The Voice (5.4 at 9:30) and NCIS: Los Angeles (2.9 at 9:30).

WEEK TWO
SHIELD's 30% drop caused reverberations throughout the rest of ABC's all-newbie Tuesday, but it was with Trophy Wife that it started to get really ugly. It posted a 1.4 demo, down a whooping 39% week-to-week, and it fell 36% behind its The Goldbergs lead-in (2.2).

PROGNOSIS
Even before this show premiered, I was hoping Trophy Wife would be able to find some way out of what seemed like very sub-optimal scheduling or, if nothing else, that it'd become this season's The New Normal and be able to hold onto this season's Go On well enough to get a back nine. But it's hard to envision any kind of rescue scenario coming to pass after Trophy Wife's 1.4 followed immediately by Super Fun Night (the show occupying what I see as TW's "best" timeslot) premiering at a 3.2. Trophy Wife might be able to make it through the fall, but the steep erosion from The Goldbergs means it'll be lucky to air in 2014. Cancel.

"First Two Weeks" is an ongoing experiment to see how often a new scripted show's fate can be predicted by the very earliest data. Here are the picks and lineups for every show this season.

It will air its 13 and then never be seen again.

Sad as it is, it turned into a clear cancel. This would have been a perfect fit after MF, so sad.
