Spotted Ratings, Monday 9/16/13: Three-py Hollow

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The broadcast networks pretty much all came up aces to open the pre-premiere week, but the headliner was certainly Fox's Sleepy Hollow, whose premiere not only more than doubled year-ago occupant The Mob Doctor (1.5) but also edged all of Fox's other low-3's drama premieres in the last few years, from Terra Nova (3.1) to Alcatraz (3.3) to The Following (3.2). Of course, those shows' post-premiere results ended up being rather mixed, but Hollow's gonna have much more cushion than any of those because we're now living in a world where The X Factor gets low 2's.
    • Hollow's lead-in was the ever-consistent Bones dead even with last year's premiere, though it might have been helped a bit by the considerable heat in the 9:00 hour.
  • On ABC, Dancing with the Stars got a one-week head start on The Voice and was just a tick below then number when it had that head start in spring 2013. (And up 24% on last year's against-Voice premiere.) That season quickly disintegrated back into the low 2's the next week against The Voice, so it's still a "wait and see," but it's still a good start even if it comes down a bit in finals due to Pittsburgh football pre-emptions.
  • Back to a normal start time, CBS' Under the Dome departed for the summer with its best number since July. It was up 33% from the overrun-depressed penultimate ep but just a tick from two weeks ago.

Could rating be up year to year in the fall?

I hope this is a good start of what will be a great year for broadcasters!

Oh, ye of little faith, Mr. Igwell...

(you, too, Mr. Spot)

It's times like these I wonder if I should stop stressing over The Question lines and simply adopt the TVBTN approach. "All of YOUR predictions really sucked!"

Spot said...

Or cover both bases with "Nobody saw this coming!"

Spot said...

Can't believe Sleepy Hollow's ratings. :O

Man. It's a good thing you don't lose extra points the further you are off, because I was WAY off. Was last year a bottoming out? Are people just more ready to watch TV since the broadcasters didn't go to sleep during the summer like they usually do?

That DWTS rating right there, when it is still away from the voice, is the reason why I will keep saying for the whole season how stupid ABC is for not moving it to sundays away from the voice. It is such an obvious solution to their two biggest problems at once, it is crazy that they refuse to recognise it.

Under the Dome also finished very strong, I am so happy with it. I liked the finale. Last week was a bit better maybe, but this episode was also very good. I didn’t necessarily enjoy the last 2 minutes as cliffhanger, but everything else was great. I am curious to see the effects it has on next week’s summer programming.

On another news, go Sleepy Hollow, excellent job. I think I will break my rule and watch it right away because I am curious about it and it got itself some cushion. FOX will have a puzzling decision on their hands soon when it has to move one of Bones/Sleepy Hollow to Fridays while The X-Factor has lower ratings for three hours a week. I wish they would just wise up and premiere Almost Human Wednesdays at 9 thereby reducing The X-Factor hours.

It is a pipe dream at this point. The annoying part is that it didn't have to be. They are super annoying by not doing it (BTW, I strongly dislike the idea of keeping revenge on sundays at 10, I am just agreeing to the general thing here :P )

I would have considered the Wednesday scenario almost impossible a week ago, but given the X Factor and Sleepy Hollow premieres I now think it might be realistic.

I think that if Sleepy Hollow remains north of 2.5 for the next weeks and if X-Factor remains close to the 2.0 mark it would be Fox's best course of action. But I am still not sure that they are going to be able to to acknowledge it and piss off Simon.

By the way, you were right all along in hating FOX schedule so much, they should have listened to you and cut down the x factor hours right away.

The fact that FOX Wednesday should have been Singing/Drama was so obvious to everyone here, at TVBTN, and just about every other site about television I peruse. That was probably the biggest shock to me, because it's so unjustifiable given how much the two shows fell in two years.

I agree. However, I have to say that as much as I disliked it back then, I didn't hate it as much as I hated ABC's refusal to move DWTS because I still felt that despite everything, the x factor was still producing acceptable numbers for fox. I did not anticipate the extent of the decline that its premiere seemed to suggest. It really changes the game completely and FOX will look like a fool if it moves Bones to Fridays having the x-factor on a lower level during the week 3 times. I wonder if it is possible for FOX to have the x-factor on at 8pm wednesdays, thursdays and fridays? It could potentially be the best solution for all nights. Almost Human could launch Wednesdays at 9

Shows like Idol/DWTS used to shrink the performance shows late in the season all the time as the number of contestants decreased. Now they just pad them out with filler. But I could easily see them spinning it to Simon that way. It would all line up quite nicely on the calendar as they could still launch Almost Human in November, after baseball and late in the X season.

Spot said...

Well I hope you are right (if all current numbers remain predictably in the same range).

I see Sleepy Hollow's number, but I don't believe it. Wow. It beat The Following, Touch, and Terra Nova! And I almost bet over, too.

Nice showing for DWTS. It's a shame it won't be moved. I've said it before and I'll say it again: People need to be fired at ABC. Scheduling is the reason they'll be a clear fourth place this season.

Spot said...

If I start falling behind too far, I'm going to fire up the old Magic 8 Ball.

Spot said...

I'm surprised you didn't just use that right away, after how well you did w/ it at the end last year.
