Spotted Ratings, Labor Day Weekend Roundup 8/28-8/31/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Of these four nights from Thursday to Sunday, the only one noticeably depressed week-to-week in overall viewing due to the holiday was Sunday, and most broadcast/cable shows were down considerably on that night. The other nights may have been lower in PUT as well if not for the return of college football.
  • It's also worth noting that Thursday was one of the wonkiest days of the TV year due to massive NFL preseason pre-emptions. Not too much should be made of the ratings on this night because many shows had much lighter market coverage than usual, but The Quest (0.3) and the one-hour finale of renewed Welcome to Sweden (0.4/0.3) were particularly putrid.
  • The return of broadcast college football did not go well on Saturday, with ABC's Florida State/Oklahoma State game (1.9) 39% below last year's opener and Fox's USC/Fresno State (0.4) down 64%. Both of these were much worse matchups than the networks had on opening night last year, with ABC's game just barely topping the late primetime game on ESPN (1.77).
  • By far the weirdest ratings of this long weekend belonged to Reckless, which first held its usual 0.5 in a special Saturday airing due to that two-hour golf overrun a few weeks back. Then it skyrocketed to a 0.9 on Sunday. It had incredibly light competition from an America's Got Talent repeat (0.5) and an ABC telethon (which didn't count in finals but had a 0.2 in prelims). But for a show that had either a 0.5 or 0.6 for the first nine episodes, that is extremely weird. It's got one more Sunday airing to try to prove it wasn't a fluke, then will burn off the last two eps the following Saturday.

Spot, what is the record low for a big 4 original on a weekday? Sweden and Quest have to be candiates for that!

The MDA telethons both this year and last year would've had 0.2's on weeknights but they weren't counted in finals. I can't think of another original getting a 0.2 on a weeknight off the top of my head.

While I have you here, what do you think of Wipeouts chances of returning? It was barely down y2y for a lot of the season but has posted some pretty sucky .8's for 2 hour episodes and a .6 on Labor Day!

I think once you throw out the 7:00 and holiday weekend episodes, it had a good season y2y. So I see it in the same kind of boat as Motive. If it was renewed last year, it could/should be renewed this year. But the ratings are low enough that I'm not confident.

ABC at least did Rookie Blue's average a solid by wrapping up its season before the Labor Day weekend.

The Reckless phenomenon is super weird.
