Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/7/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • It ain't easy to skew older than an NCIS, but CBS' premiere of Intelligence (2.4) pulled it off, hanging a typical NCIS: Los Angeles demo rating but with a million or two more total viewers (16.59m). Not great, not horrible, and not really telling either way about the show's prospects on Monday.
  • As for the night's other series premiere, ABC's Killer Women (0.9) was predictably killed by the wretched timeslot situation. I thought it might be a little less disastrous because it seemed like something that could tap into the Dancing with the Stars/Castle crowd, and the skew somewhat suggests that (it grew slightly from Trophy Wife in total viewers), but unfortunately a lot of those people probably had no idea this show existed.
  • The big four were all original all the time, and here are a few other quick notes:
    • ABC's Agents of SHIELD adjusted up to a tick above the very mediocre number it took into hiatus.
    • Fox hit a new low with increasingly troubling New Girl, which lost head-to-head to The Goldbergs for the first time since October 1 and didn't really even look all that different from the other Fox comedies. It'll be a more favorable story for New Girl in 18-34 numbers, as always, but this isn't a good result... especially since The Voice isn't even around as competition anymore.
    • NBC's The Biggest Loser and Chicago Fire were both a bit lower than when they aired alongside The Voice in the fall, but not disappointingly so.
  • Cable had a big night with the returns of ABC's Pretty Little Liars (1.2), FX's Justified (1.1) and TBS' Cougar Town (0.9), all three down by two tenths from their premieres a year ago. Leading the way among cable originals was BET's premiere of Being Mary Jane (1.5), which impressed despite dropping 25% from its pilot preview in July.

Intelligence half-hours (preliminary) were encouraging 2.5 and 2.3. I mean, usually we see something like 2.7 and 2.1 in this situation, and I expected something like 2.5 an 1.9.

Fuuuuuun. This is the part where we say, "Great line, Spot. Guess we'll have to wait until finals to see how The Question shakes out."

My instinct was that it was a bit high, but that there'd be enough of a PUT boost from the polar vortex (nobody going out) to drag it over anyway. Was PUT higher than usual in the end?

Chicago Fire's best True ratings this season, despite only 10/11 in A18-49, isn't it? I'd call it surprisingly well.
Next we'll s see if The Blacklist is equally resilient to Voicelessness.

*Voicelessness = period between 2 cycles of The Voice when NBC used to be beaten by Univision on a regular basis and in constant fear of The CW doing them the same.

After the finals/cable: These numbers are pretty low for a day when it was -12 degrees during primetime where I live. What the hell else was there to do?

What happened with the True numbers? Excluding the 10pm shows, they seem pretty harsh on everyone, particularly Shield, NCIS, Intelligence and even The Biggest Looser.

On another note, it's good to see the broadcasters on a healthy night year to year. ABC is particularly shocking but it just shows how well Shield and The Goldbergs are doing despite all the hate Shield has been getting. Yes, we all thought it would be higher, but once we get past expectations, the truth is that a newbie show doing a 2.2 nowadays on any network is a success, particularly considering this one is not propped up by a big lead-in and that it goes up against the biggest freaking drama on TV. It baffles me how so little people recognize that.

I like the term.

I know I definitely expected a big PUT boost. Burned me on the Question.
