Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/23/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Fox's new drama Rake premiered to a measly 1.7 demo rating and 7.1 million total viewers, dropping about half of its lead-in from American Idol (3.4). This may have been a conceivably OK number later in the season against full-strength competition. On this night, it means you can pretty much forget about it... unless the audience's reception was remarkably positive. (As for Idol, it was 35% below last season's second Thursday, and it still hasn't even faced an original CBS lineup yet.)
  • Among the low-rated original fare elsewhere, ABC's The Taste (1.1) bounced back somewhat against a weaker (and one-hour) Idol, but NBC's Community (1.1) and Parks and Recreation (1.2) saw no such rally. And the finals changed the picture for the CW, which was up a tick for the 100th The Vampire Diaries (1.2) and even with the return of Reign (0.6).

Wow...midseason minus Chicago PD has not been kind to any network so far, and even then CPD's nothing special.

It was just as I feared. Low-3s Idol. Barely 50% retention. Goodbye, Rake.

Reign grew by the half hour. Though that might be due to the extra Big Bang repeat changing to the Crazy Ones. Growing in the half hour is never a bad sign

I think Marc Berman's half-hours are wrong. 0.5 & 0.6 do not average out to 0.7. I'm guessing that it's 0.7/0.6.

Reign returned with 0.9 in W18-34 (preliminary), that's some 10% above already good fall average of (I think) 0.82. Now it looks renewed more than ever.

It will be interesting to see if The CW beats NBC (8-10 PM period only) in final ratings. In preliminary both networks are at 0.9, so probably it comes down to hundredths.

I'm sad for Rake, but happy for nailing it in the game. I mean, this time I was confident, as opposed to some lucky guesses I recently had.

Now I feel foolish. Should have worked that out myself before posting.

I only started watching Royal Pains last summer and loved that USA aired 13 episodes in 14 weeks. I don't understand why cable networks insist that airing a handful of episodes, then going away for months at a time before airing new episodes is a good way to build an audience.
