Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/9/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The weeks before American Idol returns are always a nice time to run up some numbers, and this Thursday was particularly ripe since the main piece of competition from last week went away (ESPN's 5.2 Sugar Bowl). The shows responded, as nearly everything on CBS and NBC went up week-to-week. The Big Bang Theory, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Two and a Half Men and Elementary all swung up by multiple ticks. All these shows hit their best numbers since the opening few weeks of the season, and The Millers held in finals to actually tie its premiere rating. Against basically no competition, this night is more of a beauty contest than a real game-changer, but it's certainly better to grow than not to grow.
  • Perhaps the night's biggest surprise was infamous post-premiere dropper Community actually growing in week two, and it helped the return of Parks and Recreation to a new season high (which got even higher after finals).
  • The only week-to-week dropper was the second episode of ABC's The Assets.

CBS really did very well last night. I also think it's worth noting that The Taste is solid week to week and that's in that horrible ABC 8pm slot. I think it will turn out to be a long time utility player for ABC

Since Parks and Recreation is a much broader comedy than Community, but still appeals to the demographic that watches Community, it could be a good bridge between Community and Michael J. Fox, but not Sean Saves the World.

Considering that MJF has dropped like two thirds from it's debut, I don't think lack of exposure is a problem. If Community or Parks were decent performers I might agree that NBC should've worked harder to get synergy across the whole night, but at this point were talking about, at best, a single tenth better here or there.

TBBT down y2y? I always thought its peak usually came in February, hope that 5.7 isn't a midseason high and the show will hit 6+ again!

January last year. It hit the series high 6.4 exactly 52 weeks ago.

A18-49: Community 1.4 / Parks & Recreation 1.5
True ratings: 1.4 / 1.6, gap is wider
Isn't it a bit counterintuitive considering Community had a weaker lead-in and went against monster TBBT?

With the Assets cancelled at a .65 average, it puts it exactly between your worst case and prediction! Good job!

Indeed. It's doing the same job as Winter Wipeout used to do - keep the lights on in the slot when the 8pm drama pulls TVD-level numbers. And there isn't a directly consequential hit to the summer schedule from overexposure of a major summer hit (which, at that point, Wipeout was).

With the Cowell empire collapsing, I really think ABC could go unscripted all year round in that slot. The Taste would be a part of that, and I could see room for a news magazine in the mix.

i second that

The HUT level was actually highest in the 8:00 half-hour. Not sure why. May just be rounding error and/or may normalize after half-hour breakdowns.

Another option would be Sundays midseason in a world in which they finally realize they can't keep serialized shows there.
