Spotted Ratings, Sunday 1/5/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The first two Sundays of NFL playoff season are always rather unique because there's a huge audience watching late-afternoon TV leading into primetime, yet no actual football during primetime. This influx of overall viewership often helps some shows to overachieve even if they don't have the direct NFL lead-in. Last year, it was the huge return of The Biggest Loser, and this time NBC had another pretty nice number in the last two hours: a retrospective of Jimmy Fallon's Late Night years.
  • ABC also had a good night with a special The Bachelor at 8/7c leading into the highest-rated Revenge in three months. So far, the plan to air three Revenges in January looks good... but the next two will go up against the Golden Globes and the NFC Championship. CBS' The Good Wife and The Mentalist were more average, though The Mentalist's finals uptick helped.
  • Fox had very high Animation Domination numbers due to the NFL lead-in, which averaged a 16.1 rating for the game and hung an unbelievable 17.1/17.6 in its last two segments. This vaulted The Simpsons to even exceed its post-NFL playoff result from last season. (The NFL post-game show averaged a 10.0 demo, and that's what is used as the lead-in for The Simpsons in the True calculation.)
