Spotted Ratings, Thursday 1/30/14

WHAT MATTERS:

  • Fox's Rake (1.3) needed a week two miracle, and it didn't happen; in fact, the show was down nearly a quarter from last week's already terrible debut and now well below half of its lead-in from an also-sagging American Idol (3.2). It may get to burn off a few more episodes against the three Olympics Thursdays upcoming, but Fox should find something better starting the week after.
  • Meanwhile, CBS was back to originals for the first time since Idol's arrival, and all the comedies - The Big Bang Theory (5.2), The Millers (2.6), The Crazy Ones (1.9) and Two and a Half Men (2.0) - dropped by roughly a half point from the "beauty contest" numbers against no competition three weeks ago. Elementary (1.9), though, looked quite good with both of the usual 10/9c dramas sitting out.
  • NBC did much better than usual from 9-11 with a Saturday Night Live special (1.8), while Community (1.1) and Parks and Recreation (1.3) were even to barely up in their first airings against both Idol and TBBT.

C'mon Fox, move Rake to Friday and put Surviving Jack/Enlisted at 9 after the Olympics. You know you want to.

Community continues to be the show that refuses to die.

With Bones moving back to Mondays in March perhaps Enlisted should move to Thursdays, especially if it's recent ratings bump turns out to not be an outlier.

Thursday: Idol/Enlisted/Surviving Jack
Friday: Kitchen Nightmares/Raising Hope/Us & Them

Unlike last season, Fox has enough back-up/burn-off options to actually have choices to make.

Really love Elementary standing firm, especially after the big syndication news. I still don't understand the point of CBS being the first to have NEW episodes in January when they're just going to go away for a couple weeks after.

The Crazy Ones should really be doing better. There is a huge drop off from Idol to Rake and it should atleast be keeping 90% of the Millers demo

Now the Big Bang Theory is offically down year to year. Not by much, but it is down. I think only Chicago Fire, Supernatural, and Scandal are up

To be fair, The Millers is probably inflated by it's lead in, looking at it's quarter hours could paint a brighter picture for TCO's retention. I very much doubt that The Millers is pulling a 2.6 at 8:59. And hey, The Millers' retention sucks even more. If you flipped the two shows their ratings would probably flip too.

I love the Crazy Ones! Great show! But it should be doing better. Even in repeat mode The Millers got a 1.8 out of a 3.0 Big Bang repeat. The Crazy Ones got a 1.2 out a 2.5 Big Bang repeat. 60% compared to 48% retention.
Honestly, I think CBS' best bet at success would have been
8:00 Two and a Half Men
8:30 The Millers
9:00 The Big Bang Theory
9:30 The Crazy Ones
Big Bang would do better at 9 and I feel like Two and a Half Men would have held its own better at 8.

I think you missed my point. I was just saying that I don't think that TCO's retention is as bad as it looks when looking just at the show averages. And I'm not sure that repeat ratings tell too much of a story. I mean, The Crazy Ones isn't exactly burning up the world, but I don't think it's doing that badly, especially since TAAHM, which you think should be the 8:00 anchor, is doing, like, a tenth better.

SVU is also up by 7% and Castle is up by 3%. TBBT is barely down, it's down from a 5.30 to a 5.28, so it will depend on how it holds up during the rest of the season. If you count unscripted, Shark Tank is also up 5% and Dateline is also even. Blue Bloods and How I Met Your Mother also have very minimal drops, even though they are still down.

I think episode from 12/20/2013 was original and not encore.
Season had 13 episodes order with finale at 1/31/2014, so one original is missing in the table for sure.

Yep, thank you.
