Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 1/15/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • NBC had at least a bit of a sigh of relief as Go On recovered somewhat from its nightmarish without-Voice debut a week ago, ending up more in line with what I'd have expected coming into midseason. But that recovery was offset in their overall average by a week two drop from Off Their Rockers (down a tick in each half-hour).
  • Most of the already struggling Fox lineup downticked, including the first ever sub-2 result from New Girl. On CBS, NCIS had a best-since-premiere night, while NCIS: Los Angeles had one of its worst results. Shrug.
  • Another busy cable Tuessday was highlighted by a huge debut from an hour of originals on BET, Real Husbands of Hollywood (2.1) and Second Generation Wayans (1.7). Big week-ago premieres were followed up with big post-premiere drops from Pretty Little Liars (1.1) and Justified (0.9), but Cougar Town (1.0) held pretty close to even in its second TBS outing.

If I'm a producer on Smash, I'm finding the nearest paper bag to hyperventilate into, because there's a decent chance my lead-in's in the low 1s. That show has never shown to be a self-starter before, so I don't know what NBC is expecting now.

What the hell happened to NCIS:LA? Normally it tracks fairly well with the mothership. Flat, I could somewhat understand, but down? I've never thought this before, but maybe CBS will move NCIS back to 9 PM in the fall, and let another show take The Voice on. I know that only buys them another year or so, and it doesn't stop Mark Harmon from leaving (which would all but end the show), but hey! Road to 300!

So NCIS is the only show above 3.0 and LA is the only other one above 2.0. And it's almost February sweeps. O...K. Just like literally everyone predicted, all the quirky single-camera sitcoms have eaten each other alive. New Girl debuted in the mid-4s just 16 months ago, and now it can't even do half that.

Prediction: ABC takes it's slow burn success story Scandal and plunks it in the Tuesdays at 9 slot in Fall 2013 so it has something resembling an anchor and doesn't potentially run up against a CBS comedies like on Monday at 9 or CBS comedy expansion (and likely Big Bang) Thursday at 9.

I say ABC ought to go after Tuesday with the Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. program in development, provided it is any good at all. I have a feeling ABC may be hoping to groom Scandal into an heir to the Grey's slot on Thursday.

I agree with this. I think ABC will try to go all male on Tuesdays with Shield and leave Scandal on Thursdays to take over Grey's once it inevitable ends, if the growth continues. However, the problem is that they will insist on having that damn dwts results show on tuesdays, thus blocking any sale as male night and actually off-putting those who try the night earlier on. IMO, what ABC should do is create that monday night on the dying monday's, move dwts to tuesdays, where the reality competition isn't as strong and let the results show be on thursdays at 8 where it is compatible with greys and, although with poor results, it will still do better than all these failed dramas they put in there... What do you think?
