First Two Weeks, Golden Boy

WEEK ONE
CBS' midseason drama Golden Boy began the way most recent CBS midseason dramas have begun: not well. It opened with just a 1.8 demo, dropping significantly from the 2.9 demo from the last half-hour of NCIS: Los Angeles. And this was despite facing virtually no broadcast competition from struggling 10/9c competitors Body of Proof (1.2) and Smash (0.9). This point appeared to end any hope that CBS might keep the show on Tuesday beyond its scheduled two-week preview.

WEEK TWO
The show dropped 11% in week two to a 1.6 against a similarly light slate of competition and with a similarly strong NCIS: LA lead-in. While -11% is a pretty good week two drop, it's not so good when the premiere was this soft.

PROGNOSIS
The best news for Golden Boy is that it gets to try a different situation starting with its next episode. That's better than being forced to fail again on Tuesday, I guess. And the 1.6 demo from week two would actually be a strong number on Friday. However, the odds are very much against the show holding up entirely or even mostly on Friday, especially considering how little resistance the broadcasters offered in the Tuesday slot. And it will need to hold up entirely or mostly to have any shot. Cancel.

"First Two Weeks" is my look at... the first two weeks of a new scripted broadcast show's ratings. I also line up all of the premiere and week two drop numbers together.

Golden Boy's Tuesday tryout is permanent now. I'm guessing that you had this ready to go before CBS made the announcement yesterday. So it gets to fail again on Tuesdays after all.

Yep. For as rarely as these situations come up, I sure seem to screw them up a lot. Didn't see this one coming.
