The Question, Monday 3/25/13: Are the Lights Back On at NBC?

When NBC announced a four-month hiatus for The Voice and Revolution, their March 25 return instantly became the highest-stakes evening of NBC's entire season. Since then, a comically awful winter and solid starts from competing ABC reality series have further upped the ante. Are the lights back on at NBC? That's The Question for Monday, March 25, 2013.

The Voice Last Season Revolution This Season
4.2 (premiere, Monday 9/10/12)
4.38 (fall 2012 Monday average)
4.08 (fall 2012 Tuesday average)
4.2 (Monday finale, 12/17/12)
4.9 (Tuesday finale, 12/18/12)
4.1 (premiere, Monday 9/17/12)
3.09 (fall 2012 average)
2.8 -> 2.6 -> 2.6 -> 2.9 (last 4 eps)

For Revolution, I'm basically going with what I used to pretty good effect in predicting Grimm's return: roughly the low end of the fall numbers. It could easily go higher or lower, because the audience here is probably not quite as "settled in" as was Grimm's, but a big lead-in should help it stay reasonable.

I have The Voice going below the 4.2 from the fall premiere, (once again) if only because nobody's watching NBC promos, but the show ended its fall season so strongly that I don't see it going drastically lower. We'll see how the new coaches do as TV personalities, but I think Shakira and Usher are big enough names that they won't be a significant negative for the premiere.

The Voice PLUS Revolution Over/Under: 6.55.

Over. I'm being very optimistic and predicting a 4.3 for The Voice and a 3.0 for Revolution.

Over without too much of a struggle.

Over. 4.0/4.2 for the voice plus 2.6/2.7 for revolution

The new Voice judges probably won't have quite enough heat to bring a four, and if we assume Revolution comes in at or below the fall low point, then that'll be enough to pull it under.

But then again, my inclination is toward Revolution hitting the fall finale number, which takes a little burden off The Voice in terms of filling in the overall number. If we assume a 2.9 for Revolution + a 3.8 for The Voice (that's the number I'm spitballing in my head for the new judges) that equals a 6.7. So, Over.

I'll go opposite of others and say UNDER. The Voice with a 3.7 and Revolution at a 2.5 for total of a 6.2.

...Over at 7.8. Revolution at 3.4; The Voice at 4.4.

I'm struggling because NBC has been plumbing new levels of suck the past three months, and I wonder whether even the two golden children can pull them out of it. Personally, I think that if Britney Spears couldn't draw new interest to X Factor, I don't see why Shakira and Usher will bring more viewers to Voice. The thing is, if it drops 15% like reality shows have been doing this year, that's 3.6, which is awfully low for a premiere. So I'll say it drops more like 10%.

Voice: 3.9
Rev: 2.9

Total: 6.8 and OVER

The stats for Questions regarding NBC and Mondays say the wise money is on the Under. But I'm taking my optimism and running with it.

Over.
