Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 2/13/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Not a happy night in eye land. CBS' Survivor had a borderline disastrous return, down over 20% from the premiere last spring and below virtually all the ratings from the fall season. And a last-minute shrinking of the program to 90 minutes led to a low-rated The Big Bang Theory repeat at 9:30, which likely helped derail CSI at 10:00.
  • ABC's The Middle was another 8/7c head-scratcher, and the American Idol bleeding continues; this point was down a whooping 30% year-to-year. But other than all that... pretty steady evening on broadcast!
  • A couple unfortunate stories in the cable ratings:
    • The Americans followed its solid 1.2 premiere with just a 0.85 in week two, and now it's down to an increasingly marginal 0.7 in week three.
    • And the rough winter continues for TNT, which debuted season five of Southland (0.4) at a new series low. About the only consolation there is that at least it ain't Monday Mornings.
    • Why was CBS' Big Bang repeat so low? The late listings change was surely part of it, but it also had to compete with TBS, where the TBBT repeat crowd usually hangs out. The CBS repeat only tied the 9:30 TBS repeat (1.4).

I think the cw is the winner of the night to be honest. Everything else did horribly, even modern family and, to a smaller extent, american idol, but the cw actually went up and had both shows higher than 1 against all the competition. Chicago Fire is the other winner IMO.

Jeez, I thought Survivor would be at least half a point higher.

So, are we almost at the point where we call time on the two-cycles-a-year reality shows? Dancing and Survivor are way down, and Idol took its first big hit when X-Factor showed up (and didn't do so hot itself). NBC's running its big reality champ year-round out of sheer necessity, and Fox sort of is as well, but the other two networks must be thinking about how to scale these shows back.

I don't understand where that Survivor number comes from. There wasn't too much else on, and it's all stuff that it has beaten before. I don't get the point of the shrinking, either, unless they were planning on launching a new show.

The Pre-Valentine's Day Mystery remains unsolved.

Definitely a fair question. The Bachelor stemmed its decline in part by switching in a once-a-year schedule.

Also consider that all of these shows are old: Idol, Survivor, and The Amazing Race have been on the air for over a decade, America's Next Top Model will hit 10 years this summer, and Dancing isn't that far behind. I think how this season of The Voice does could be telling: if it avoids catching ratings laryngitis then the audience is declining for the long-timers.

Maybe it's just mass rejection?

On a side note - maybe this'll finally shut up BigTVFan and his Nielsen vs. ABC conspiracy theory mongering on Twitter.

I wonder if it's ever been either close or on the side of the line I've picked when I've said "X, but I think it'll be close". Cause this is like the sixth time I can remember where I was not only wrong, but dead wrong.

As long as it stays above a 2.0 for seasons 26 and 27 and above a 1.5 for season 28, I stand behind my prediction of 30 seasons and out for Survivor.

I searched my inbox for "James "One" Shade" and "be close" and you are only 1-6 when you use that phrase. Crazy.

It was close several times though... Tuesday Shark Tank (your only win), Emily Owens, Idol premiere, The Americans...

Perhaps he'll just blame the declines on those mean critics liking HBO shows more than broadcast dramas, thereby combining his two favorite topics into one.

I don't actually recall seeing that one recently. Or maybe I'm just not reading enough of his blog posts, despite following (and occasionally arguing w/) him on Twitter.
