Spotted Ratings, Sunday 2/17/13

  • How much of ABC Sunday's drop through the event season gauntlet was purely about competition and how much was "real" damage? If their first relatively event-free Sunday since early January was any indication... a lot of "real." Once Upon a Time went up just two ticks week-to-week and only managed to tie its result from two episodes ago against the AFC Championship game. Revenge got a better bounce, but it still made up less than half of what had fallen away over the last month and a half. The shows can still hope that some Academy Awards exposure and a likely stronger 10/9c hour with the Red Widow premiere will lift things up a bit more.
  • Things didn't go much better on CBS or Fox. The Amazing Race had a modest return (down 11% year-to-year), but it was still the top broadcast program on this mess of an evening. (It also edged Wednesday's disappointing Survivor premiere after finals.) The Good Wife and The Cleveland Show hit further season lows and The Mentalist and the other Fox cartoons were pretty close.
  • Week two of The Walking Dead (11 million viewers and a 5.6) will be the top demo program of the week, edging a Valentine's Day The Big Bang Theory, though it was down around 10% from last week's premiere. TNT also crushed the broadcasters with the NBA All-Star Game (3.5), up two ticks year-to-year.

Revenge did about what I expect and I think it should go higher moving forward after last night's amazing episode and with the ending of Downtown Abbey (although the damn 3 week break certainly won't help). It is actually OUAT's very small rebound that I find the most worrying. Hopefully, word of mouth from last night's also very good episode will help. And it does have a smaller break. Let's hope. I hate ABC.

I'm starting to think ABC's Sunday shows should just sit out the month of February even though it's sweeps. Between the Super Bowl and the Oscars, the shows only get two airings in the month, and one of them is against the Grammys. Next season, ABC should consider giving the shows a mini-hiatus from late January (the AFC Championship) until early March (the Oscars).

You say that Sundays @ 10 are likely to be stronger once Red Widow premieres, but I feel like it's being under-advertised, and there just seems to be a malaise over that entire hour now. I doubt Red Widow's going to have the effect some think it will.

I watched Zero Hour and Red Widow back to back yesterday, enjoyed ZH more but felt RW is a better fit on ABC and is more likely to succeed. (Though it's easy to say that having seen ZH's premiere #.) Seems pretty compatible with Revenge, but it could skew older like your old fave Missing!

I would imagine that ABC is going to throw a more-than-average amount of promotional attention to Red Widow during the Oscars: it's getting a 2-hour debut (if Wikipedia's correct) and it sounds like it'll pair well with Revenge.

Well, I guess we will see how much it'll get, but I'm going to admit that I won't be watching the Oscars because I detest awards shows of all types (even ones as supposedly "entertaining" as the Grammys).
