Spotted Ratings, Thursday 2/7/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • What an odd week for NBC. Community had a very strong return, up two ticks from the fall 2011 premiere and miles above the 1.3/1.4 that had become the show's extremely consistent level late last season. It's well beyond what I would've imagined, so you're gonna have to look elsewhere for "why this happened," because I got nothin'. I'll remind that the show's last eye-opening result (the 2.2 in its return from hiatus in March 2012) had become a 1.3 to 1.4 within three weeks, but this is still a big win. And it helped boost Parks and Recreation to its best numbers since late 2011.
  • But if the 8:00 hour was Jekyll, the second half of the evening remains Hyde, as 1600 Penn and Do No Harm were each down two ticks to essentially hit "repeat of anything" levels. I'd be rather surprised if we see another Do No Harm in that slot.
  • It was also one heck of an evening for the situation comedy on CBS, where The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men took steps up in their second try against a suddenly fast-bleeding American Idol. But CBS, as expected, saw basically no post-Super Bowl bounce from Elementary.
  • Grey's Anatomy and Scandal were both up for ABC, with the latter back into a tie with its January 10 series high point.

It's like I said back on The Question post - The Glee Rule. Now commence the countdown for the ratings bottom to fall out, in 7...6...5...

I wonder if NBC is seriously considering moving Grimm to another night. I was previously a proponent of keeping it on Fridays, on the basis of "Don't mess with a good thing," but I think I've come around. With enough promotion, it could at least equal its Friday numbers in another 10pm slot, which would be a big improvement for either Tuesdays or Thursdays.

But that's the rub: promotion. NBC is going to be focused on relaunching The Voice and Revolution in March, especially since the former will have new judges. With Hannibal, Celebrity Apprentice, and Fashion Star still to premiere, I think moving Grimm would get lost amongst all the other programming pieces.

More likely, Rock Center is coming back to Thursdays and Dateline NBC will reappear. Next season, though, I'd move Grimm to Tuesdays.

Good points all. So what would you do with Parenthood, since it's almost certainly coming back? Hold for midseason, since it only ever gets half a season anyway? Move it to Thursdays? It might pair up better with the comedies (assuming they stay with comedy in the 9pm hour) then all the heavier dramas they've tried there recently.

touch question today?

Parenthood would be a good option for Thursdays if NBC keep their 4 comedy block. But seeing them having 4 comedies on the network, period, is tough: Parks & Recreation is the only sitcom that NBC could renew without holding its nose right now.

I also like Parenthood for Sundays after football ends. With Revenge not taking the step up in ratings that ABC thought would happen, there's an available audience there that isn't going to watch Family Guy or whatever older-skewing show CBS will plant at 9.

I still can not believe that NBC whiffed on all of their midseason 10 PM shows. And so badly. Deception's at low 1s. Smash PREMIERED at low 1s. Do Not Resuscitate could only hope to reach low 1s some day.

As for Big Bang, THIS 6.1 means something. Against full comp and a premiere, it shows how strong it is. Absolutely crushed Idol, which is something I didn't expect it to do. I figured that they'd both sort of glide down together after BBT peaked this or next season. Now I don't think that'll happen any time soon.

My guess is that Community benefited from an aggressive online promotion campaign.

When people say that about fanbases, it's usually crap, but then most scripted network shows usually don't spike in the ratings having been off-air for over half-a-year.

It won't last and Community will be back to 1.2-1.3 by the end of the season, which is still pretty solid considering the timeslot.

As of a couple hours ago, we will NOT see another Do No Harm in the Thursday slot...or apparently, in any slot. See here

This is a True high for TBBT, right? It is so damn impressive!
