Spotted Ratings, Monday 2/16/15

WHAT MATTERS:
  • FINALS UPDATE: +0.1 for the The Bachelor (2.6) and Celebrity Apprentice (1.7).
  • After some major bleeding over the last few weeks, Fox's genre dramas finally had a bounce-back night. A much-teased Joker appearance on Gotham (2.1) saw the show surge by three tenths, and the penultimate Sleepy Hollow (1.4) was up by two.
  • On NBC, it was finale night for Celebrity Apprentice (1.6), which posted its lowest number of the season aside from the one-hour episode last week. Though this season marked a very significant resurgence for the franchise, the last couple weeks came back to earth a touch. But this still edged the 1.5 finale from the last cycle in 2013. State of Affairs also signed off with its usual 1.0.
  • CBS had steady comedies 2 Broke Girls (2.2) and Mike and Molly (2.2) leading into a somewhat weaker final two hours with a Stevie Wonder special (1.4), while ABC's The Bachelor (2.5) dropped a bit from last Monday. The CW's The Originals (0.6) rebounded a bit and Jane the Virgin remained at 0.6.

Everytime Scorpion is not new, Sleepy Hollow goes up. Has to mean something.
Great for Gotham. It needed this!

Spot said...

Outside of NBC and Fox, pretty boring night. Good for Gotham and Sleepy Hollow, and I hope SH's finale does well. Disappointing to see how south CA went. I don't know if it's the 1.4 last week or Bachelor's rising that broke its momentum, but it's disappointing that it's only slightly up from 2 years ago.

But hey, it's only the lull before the storm.

Spot said...

It's probably going to move next season if it gets renewed.

Spot said...

This marks only the second time in it's history that Mike & Molly has maintained all of an original lead in (Other time 11/4/13 - Season 4 premiere). Amazingly solid performer!

Spot said...

At least CA just got renewed though, NBC obvious has much bigger problems.

Spot said...

Sleepy Hollow is definitely hurt by Scorpion. Another "hurter" is CA. I don't think it is a coincidence that it has cooled off when The Bachelor heat up.

Spot said...

Never thought about that pattern before, I heard old SH writers went on to Scorpion though.

Spot said...

JtV appears to have some actual momentum and if the Originals holds its bounce back in the demo, seems a shame to have them both off for the next two weeks.

Spot said...

They get to avoid the strongest weeks of The Voice this way, though.

Spot said...

Gotham and Sleepy Hollow did well, and Gotham looks even more like AOS stabilizing in this range. I expected more from the finale of CA, but it was probably hurt from last week. The Bachelor is still pretty strong, and this episode was up year to year (with Olympics). CW looks steady, and I'm glad JTV held its 0.6. :)

Spot said...

Pretty much, Gotham is giving me Shield vibes with this range at around this time.

Spot said...

That's their scheduling, so there will be breaks.

Spot said...

That's good to know.

Spot said...

It's a blessing in disguise though. The Voice will likely be at its strongest level.

Spot said...

At least it seems to be scheduled better than FOX and especially NBC.

Spot said...

Trump said that The Apprentice had been renewed last night. Is there any confirmation of that (on a side not, Trump is probably the only TV host whose word on a renewal would not be taken at face value)?

Spot said...

Originals steady at 0.7 W18-34. Low, but not awful for CW standards.
Jane the Virgin steady at stellar 1.0 W18-34. Well, not stellar stellar, more stellar compared to many 0.6s it got in the fall (and even one 0.5), and great compared to other female oriented CW shows that are trending in opposite direction.

Great for Gotham. I hope it's back to mid 2s, so then finally unfounded and annoying theories of "SHIELD was dropping all the time, so Gotham surely will too" would disappear.

Spot said...

Yes, NBC sent out a press release.

Spot said...

About Gotham, it still has to face the Voice, and it might drop due to DST.

Spot said...

Shame networks like NBC and FOX haven't learned about that.

Spot said...

Yeah, I think it was renewed.

Spot said...

No surprise there, especially given the state of its scripted slate this season.

Spot said...

Didn't think about that.

Spot said...

Gotham was already renewed so it doesn't matter what people say either way.

Spot said...

True

Spot said...

CBS should stick with the Grammy Salutes to Old-Skewing Artists on Sundays. Even with how big SNL40 was, the special could have pulled slightly better numbers on that night versus here. And given how quickly CSI fell out of favor with CBS, even considering how important the show was to the network, it would have gotten a solid by having its final two episodes burnt off here.

Meanwhile, Sleepy Hollow got a boost by being the only Big 4 scripted drama in that hour. Getting some upticks now is important as the show heads into the clubhouse.

Spot said...

It's almost uncanny how closely Gotham is tracking SHIELD's freshman season ratings. When SHIELD hit its low of 1.8 (3/4/14) last season, the following week (3/11/14) it bounced back to 2.1 and then danced between 1.9 and 2.1 the remainder of its season. It's hard to predict how a less robust Voice and DST will impact Gotham's ratings but it would be something of a "marvel" if it could maintain the 2.1 and not hit new lows before its season finale.

Spot said...

It's hard to take anything The Donald says at face value but he is telling the truth. One can only hope that NBC won't be televising a Celebrity Apprentice 40th Year Anniversary special decades from now. Trump might be dead by that point but his hair is immortal.

Spot said...

Funny.

Spot said...

I have a question: Scandal's 17th episode is scheduled to air on March 26.

Is it me or is Scandal going to miss out on airing on May sweeps entirely?

Spot said...

Scandal is 2 episodes "behind" Grey's, true.
Probably they'll have 2 Scandal repeats at some point in March or April, and then all 3 series to have finale at May 14.

The problem occurred because American Crime has one more episode (11) than Secrets & Lies which was originally planned for Thursday 10 PM in March. With 10 episodes they would be able to rectify everything with airing 2 hours of Grey's on one of Thursdays.

Spot said...

I believe they ordered 22 episodes this season. They only had 18 last season because of Kerry Washington's pregnancy. Should finish around 4/30 if I'm right.

Spot said...

That's what I got, as well.

Spot said...

But it will be quite awkward to air GA original | Scandal repeat | American Crime original for two weeks, not to mention that it messes with the Scandal split season plan. But yes, it is because of American Crime and not Secrets and Lies going there. I would prefer them airing special American Crime on Monday though and getting it all in sync.

Spot said...

It doesn't have to be 2 weeks in a row.

If I was ABC, I'd just skip one episode of American Crime. Who would notice? It's story is surely painfully incoherent.

Spot said...

Sweeps start on 4/23, so they'll get in 2 episodes. They probably should try to get in more, but I'm against pre-empting the how too much since it's so serialized. Keep in mind ABC won the May sweeps last year without a single episode of Scandal.

Spot said...

Nielsen screwed up:
"NETWORK UPDATE: HAWAII 5-0 gained 0.1 in final Friday numbers. In addition, note that Nielsen has issued highly suspicious numbers showing SHARK TANK as having doubled its preliminary Friday rating to 3.6, and 20/20 almost doing the same by rising to 2.3. We’ll update this post when new info comes in, but for now take those numbers with a large amount of salt. "

Spot said...

Ahah I think that would be better yes!

But if they do Scandal repeats, at least let them be in a row, otherwise it is even more breaks for Scandal! The whole point of split seasons is for that not to happen!

Spot said...

I think that was just some problem with typing or something. Ahah otherwise it is so freaky!

Spot said...

Even if Shark Tank adjusted to a 2.6, it would be *creepy*

Spot said...

Or why doesn't ABC double up on American Crime somewhere?

Spot said...

Yeah it won't happen. I still remember the 0.5 Mother adjustment last year though

Spot said...

The Interview backlash?

Spot said...

But Mother was Mother.

I highly doubt this - any of this happened.

Spot said...

Yeah me too.

Spot said...

It would be crazy! How would Nielsen explain this?

Spot said...

Software glitch 2.0?

Spot said...

Then, I'm sure Empire is suffering from the same problem.

Spot said...

That would work if Grey's had 23 episodes. But they specifically said it has 24 episodes.

But, yes, they can do what what you're suggesting, and then have Grey's having finale leading into summer series premiere (Motive, Wife's Astronaut or whatever they said is for Thursday).

Spot said...

I was joking. You're idea with one AC episode on Monday is better.

Spot said...

Instead of having a Scandal repeat in March/April, they could do Grey's | American Crime (2 hours)
then, in May:
Grey's | Scandal (finale) | American Crime

And... Grey's (2 hours) | American Crime, both finales.

Or does

Spot said...

No, that doesn't work. There is a GA episode missing in there. I like Silvio's idea the best of using Grey's finale to launch Wives Club.

30/04: Grey's Anatomy 11x22 | Scandal 4x22 | American Crime 1x09
07/05: Grey's Anatomy 11x23 | American Crime 1x10 | American Crime 1x11
14/05: Grey's Anatomy 11x24 | Astronaut Wives Club 1x01 | Astronaut Wives Club 1x02

Spot said...

I like your idea the best actually, about launching Wives Club after GA finale.

30/04: Grey's Anatomy 11x22 | Scandal 4x22 | American Crime 1x09
07/05: Grey's Anatomy 11x23 | American Crime 1x10 | American Crime 1x11
14/05: Grey's Anatomy 11x24 | Astronaut Wives Club 1x01 | Astronaut Wives Club 1x02

This way there are no Scandal repeats at all.

Spot said...

Yes, that's only option w/o repeats.
But isn't NBA finals on ABC always scheduled Tue / Thu / Sun?
It would mean 2 weeks hiatus for Astronautic Wives after only 4 episodes. That's why I always suspected Astro Wife is planned for Wednesday. Just speculating, I think ABC never said anything about show's schedule.

Spot said...

The Walking Dead did a 6.2 in its latest Sunday episode.

@Silvio

Spot said...

Hm good point. Still, they could premiere it after GA finale for sampling it and then move it to Wednesdays the next week, no? Thursdays will probably be The Whispers centric after NBAs.

Spot said...

C+ grade for TWD.

NBA All-Stars did 3.1 according to Deadline. Grade C.
SNL40 did 7.8 (unchanged) in special ordered fast-national (those include after 11 PM portion and should be same as final). Grade A+.

That's 17.1 combined A18-49 between those three. And given SNL40 peaked between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM, probably close to 18.0 in common hour.

Spot said...

Thursday is OK if it's only out of timeslot premiere. I'm strongly for Married with Astronauts being scheduled Mon 10 PM or Wed 10 PM, to get strong lead-in from Bachelorette or good-repeating comedies. Mistresses aired on Monday for first 2 seasons, so there you have it, Wed 10 PM would be one move less.

The Whispers could go to Tuesday 10 PM maybe? If they will repeat SHIELD in summer, that is. That would be logical pairing.

And Thursday 10 PM repeats of HTGAWM because of awareness (long hiatus)?

Problem is, serialized HTGAWM and SHIELD probably would rate lousy.

Spot said...

Another ABC glitch like what they had at the start of the Fall.

Spot said...

I wonder, S&L does have a 2 hour premiere.

Spot said...

I would give it a solid B. The male skewing competition was insane, this is a reasonable drop.

Spot said...

OK, B- .

Spot said...

There's no wonder here. It's simple math, each show has arund 10 episodes left. Even an idiot could count it by finger math.

Spot said...

I think Tuesdays will be all reality again. I think in due time they should work on replacing those two hours of Extreme Weight Loss but right now that's a ridiculously cheap lineup that they have that will stay above a 1.0.

IMO, this is what is set:

Monday: The Bachelorette | The Bachelor Pad + Mistresses
Tuesday: Extreme Weight Loss | Celebrity Wife Swap
Wednesday: Comedy Repeats | ???
Thursday: ??? | ??? | ???

Friday: Shark Tank (R) | What Would You Do? | 20/20
Sunday: Wipeout | ??? | Castle Repeats

So there are 5 blank timeslots and these are the things left to schedule that I can think of:
- Rookie Blue
- The Whispers
- Astronaut Wives Club

So a forth slot will almost certainly go a cheap reality somewhere (Thursdays at 8 probably). Then for the 5th slot I say it is either another reality or Motive if they bring it back. So yes Astronaut Wives Club probably goes to Wednesdays and Thursdays become Cheap Reality | The Whispers | Rookie Blue. Sundays they probably try reality again.

Spot said...

Mon: The Bachelorette / 10 PM Mistresses
Tue: Beyond The Tank / SHIELD repeats / The Whispers
Wed: comedy repeats / 10 PM Astronaut Wives Club
Thu: Celebrity Wife Swap / Rookie Blue / HGTAWM repeats
Fri: What Would You Do? / Shark Tank repeats / 20/20
Sun: AFHV / Wipeout / new 2-hours reality

Extreme Weight Loss they can move to winter filler role. The Taste looks dead anyway.
Rookie Blue always goes to Thursday to avoid CBS dramas.
Astronauts Wed 10 PM I explained earlier.
Male skewing Tuesday, yay.

Spot said...

Given the competition and .9 lead in, how would you grade CSI?

Spot said...

As cancelled regardless of 0.9 or whatever.

Spot said...

If they do male skewing Tuesdays, then The Whispers should get 9pm, no doubt about that. What is the point of wasting the presumably decent Beyond the Tank lead-in on a repeat while also forcing the newbie to have the lower viewed hour? Also, I think they shouldn't force Beyond the Tank to go head to head with Got Talent right away.

I also think they won't put Murder repeats on schedule. They just did it for the winter. It's also a very short order so some episodes would have to repeat three times. If they go for that sort of Thursday, I would rather they stick Motive in there. But it's a very "meh" Thursday. They could keep it that way for one more year, yes, but sooner or latter they will have to try something stronger in there.

On Sundays, I don't know if they have some new reality that they can put there for two hours the whole summer. They've been repeating Castle there for the last two summers at 10pm, I expect them to do the same.

Spot said...

HGTAWM has 15 episodes, and there's like 16 weeks of summer season. That's exact match, so I don't know what are you talking about.

Of course ABC will have new reality for Sunday, they need to find replecement for DTWS, it won't last forever.

http://tvline.com/2015/01/14/castle-season-8-renewed-cancelled/
Given Rising Star‘s poor performance last summer (as well as predecessor Duets‘ similar lack of success), Lee said, “I don’t think were going to be trying [another singing show] for a little bit.” However, he hinted at “some really cool [new] reality shows for the summer.”

Spot said...

Ok on Murder, I was under the impression it was ~20 weeks, but ok. I am still unsure what good it would do to have such a serialized show repeating but okay, I can take the point.

On Sundays, I wasn't arguing they weren't going to try again, I was just saying I doubt it is a right away two hour attack. I expect it to be on the 9pm hour only.

Spot said...

That's fine, 1 hour Sunday reality fits with your idea of Castle repeat. Or they can put NY Med if that's not cancelled.

They need to repeat HTGAWM somewhere during summer, it's almost 7 months of a hiatus. ABC, BET, Netflix, combination of above... somewhere.
Yes, my Tuesday is a bit iffy. But maybe it's better to have low rated male Tuesday, than those shows scattered around.

Spot said...

I understand and agree with the principle of repeating Murder but my thing is that I am really not sure what is the benefit it will have. And the ratings will be horrible. But I won't opposite to it either way. It's better if they make it available in a thousand other platforms though.

My thing with your male lineup is that you are using it to replace a lineup that albeit not successful, pulls okay ratings, is stable and cheap, which is the Tuesday reality lineup. On the other hand, you have Thursdays completely empty only with Rookie Blue. Why not attack that day instead? In any case, I doubt we see Shield repeats on the schedule. If they didn't put it on the schedule last year when it was a freshman, they probably won't put it this year. If they do happen to do it, then it really should be Beyond | Whispers | Shield (R) and not the other way around though.

Spot said...

I was just hoping you'd humor me, but whatever.

Spot said...

Not sure if this has already been brought up did anymore hear that The Middle's Charlie McDermott has signed to star on Super Clyde.

Spot said...

He's on the college in The Middle, they can easily write him out. Writers probably would be happy to (often they have to go out of their way to jsutify his presence), although, some fans might not be as happy.

Whoopi Goldberg just signed to star In ABC multicam comedy pilot Delores & Jermaine. She still big star? Honest question.
Similar situation, article says she's still under contract with The View.

Spot said...

Kinda sorta. She's nowhere near as popular as she was in the 90s, but she is still working...only that she does little cameos or small roles in movies (Muppets, Ninja Turtles, Top Five), or Direct-to-DVD schlock. So she's not Celebrity Apprentice Z-list bad, but not necessarily a huge selling point anymore.

Spot said...

I read that too. I was nervous at first that The Middle would be affected, but McDermott could go recurring, especially since he's in college, and Eden Sher does voiceover for Star vs. the Forces of Evil on Disney XD, so his casting won't mean anything for The Middle, even more so if Super Clyde doesn't get picked up.

Spot said...

Whoopi Goldberg is the school counselor in the Middle. I don't think she is a huge draw on her own

Spot said...

No need to be so rude. I was just pointing something out and ABC's decision to have which show be in which time slot.

Spot said...

You wasn't pointing nothing. You made nonsensical comment about Sunday show that has nothing to do with Thursday ABC schedule that was discussed. You're embarrassing yourself, again.

Spot said...

It really is, the similarities are really uncanny.

Spot said...

SNL competition.

Spot said...

No kidding.

Spot said...

Yeah, but at least it's an event instead of being a regular competition.

Spot said...

You really doesn't understand anything, huh?

BEFORE
Secret & Lies was scheduled for Thursday, so ABC synchronized Grey's / Scandal orders (24 / 22) with its 10 episodes order.

NOW
Secret & Lies is rescheduled for Sunday, and it's has nothing to do with Thursday anymore. Thus, your comment is as moronic as other your comments.

Can complete idiot understand it now? Or even so simple thing is too hard to comprehend?

Spot said...

Except YOU were the one who brought up the show in the first place, something YOU accused me of. Maybe you should learn to actually read posts instead of making snide remarks.

"Can complete idiot understand it now? Or even so simple thing is too hard to comprehend?"

It's 'Can a complete idiot', you're already an example of a real idiot.

Do you understand that now or do we need to start using stick figures and spelling everything out for you?

Spot said...

I explained it to you in the most simple way. Even little child would understand it, but not you.
You obviously can not comprehend of anything what's discussed above (or elsewhere), yet you're compelled to reply to every single comment.
Stop, just stop. Go seek help if you're not able to stop by yourself.

Spot said...

And yet YOU don't seem to understand something even a child could understand, even with the simplest explanation.

Obviously, you can't comprehend anything and have chosen to remain completely ignorant.

Yet you're the one replying to the posts to complain about it which no one forced you to reply to any of them yet YOU choose to.

If anything you should not only seek help but get a life beyond making useless condescending replies that no one is forcing you to do.

Spot said...

Better Call Saul 1.6. Technically even, but dropped 3% (1.58 to 1.63).
It stabilized early, and at high ratings. AMC got a winner.

Spot said...

No duh Captain Obvious.

Spot said...

Go seek help.

Spot said...

You're beyond help at this point, your projections of your own insecurities are getting even worse.
