Spotted Ratings, Sunday 3/23/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC's Resurrection (2.5) was down another 19% in week three. It was actually down more by percent in week three than in week two, which is not a promising trend. The show still has a lot of room to fall before being in the bubble conversation, but its potential as a game-changer for ABC is looking more limited. And it will have to try to fend off The Walking Dead's finale, which looms next week. One thing to note in its defense is that its lead-in Once Upon a Time (2.1) was also down quite a bit this week.
  • Sunday got worse for NBC, too. The second timeslot originals for Believe (1.2) and Crisis (1.3) were each down the usual 20%ish from last week, and new reality series American Dream Builders (0.9) did not make an impact at 8/7c. (It was way behind last week's The Voice recap special.)
  • And week three of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (1.7) also took a larger drop in week three than in week two.
  • CBS had a very large lead-in from an NCAA basketball game with a really unfortunate result, delaying its lineup by about 40 minutes. This boosted 60 Minutes but made no real impact on the other shows.

That's a rather bad result for Ressurection. Too bad for ABC that that stil beats the most recent episodes of AFV, Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Castle, Agents of Shield, The Golbergs, Trophy Wife, Mind Games, The Middle, Suburgatory, Mixology, Nashville, Once: Wonderland, Grey's Anatomy, Last Man Standing, The Neighbors, Shark Tank, and 20/20

...It may have been easier to just say only Dancing with the Stars, Modern Family, and Scandal beat it

Resurrection could totally end up like The Following or Agents of Shield, starting out as a Wow Big Numbers, and then going to...well, I guess the network won't cancel it given its performance relative to other shows. Since Game of Thrones went 2.0 to 2.4 from S2 premiere to S3 premiere, a 2.8 or 2.9 for the S4 premiere looks plausible - and likely winning the night a few weeks from now.

I guess Cosmos is just another Fox show then, while Family Guy continues to be the steadiest force on the network.

Everyone fell so nobody fell? :)
It's just a provocation, I know, but shouldn't the results be relativized in these cases?

Yes, point well taken. And let's not overlook the 500lb gorilla (aka NCAA) in the room along with the viewer salvation device, the DVR. 60 Minutes rising nearly 1 full point? It was seriously must-see 60 Minutes Sunday? A little bounce for The Good Wife is understandable since CBS had been teasing something big and what better way to maximize that than with the NCAA airing the same night. It's also a little suspicious that Once Upon A Time dropped significantly since it appeared to have the ratings wind at its back in its last two airings, generating lots of buzz on its own, comparing the new story arc its strong freshman season. While Resurrection is down a little more than I expected, its huge debut numbers make the successive drops look even more significant. I think this might be more indicative of a new normal for new shows debuting with strong buzz and strong social media support prior to their airing. Lots of curiosity to see what all the fuss is about and then moving on the next purported big thing, content knowing that the trusty DVR will record what you no longer have to watch live or knowing that streaming content is always available. The mighty debut episode of Resurrection showed some very respectable ratings growth in 7 day DVR viewing on top of its potent same day ratings. Even Marvels Agents of SHIELD continues to garner tremendous DVR viewing this far into the season, proving the interest is still very strong.

Let it sink in that DWTS is the third highest-rated show on ABC right now…

A really unfortunate result?? I know you are a Carolina fan, but Iowa St. deserved that game (and do not complain for a second about the clock).

I just meant I was sad that we lost. Is that OK with you? ;-)

I was just giving you a hard time about the game.

I send condolences to you for UNC's loss. But like I've told myself the last several years in the football space, there'll always be next year.
