Spotted Ratings, Monday 3/10/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC wrapped up another strong season of The Bachelor with the usual huge spike for the finale (3.2 from 8-10pm, 3.8 for the After the Final Rose special). The finale was still down 6% from last season, but that's close to in line with the drop for the season as the whole, and After the Final Rose was even. This will leave the season as a whole at roughly -7% year-to-year. Considering the previous season was itself a big success and this one had a lot of added competition from The Voice and the Olympics, this was another major win for ABC.
  • This added competition plus Daylight Saving took a major chunk out of the other networks. NBC was down double digits from 8:00 to 10:00 with The Voice (3.7) but still got a pretty respectable sampling out of Believe (2.7) in the last hour. I thought coming in that this result needed to be low 2's (or lower) or low 3's (or higher) to really serve as much of an indicator in either direction for its Sunday prospects. Considering The Voice was hit a few ticks more than expected, it might be spun as a minor win, but I would say don't make much of a judgment on this point.
  • On a semi-original night for CBS (with 2 Broke Girls and Mom sitting out), How I Met Your Mother (2.7) and Mike and Molly (1.8) took it in the chin from DST, as did Fox's return to a Monday pairing of Bones (1.7) and The Following (1.5). (For Bones, this was above most of its Friday episodes but well below its fall Monday numbers.)
  • The cable lowlight was A&E's Bates Motel (0.9), down big in week two.

Don't adjust down, plz. :)

The Voice is a bit weaker than I thought it would be at this point. :S

I am getting worried for how big HIMYM will end. The 2 3.8's it posted in a row were really reassuring. As was the 3.6 after the hiatus, but the most recent 3.3 and 2.7 look bad. 2.5 is the series low. I was hoping for it to break a 5 for the finale, but I'm not sure anymore

It can always adjust half a point up. lol

Show has something like 3 episodes till it concludes, so I care about its ratings just about much as I cared about late fall 6-episodes Nikita run.
It's not important what I care about, but the point being CBS doesn't care about those ratings anymore, too. Neither is producing studio interested in those first-airings at this phase.

I think it's the confluence of DST, The Bachelor and The Voice that hit HIMYM.

You nailed the line, Spot! I'm hoping for an adjustment down, obviously, and I suspect it's very possible if The Voice ran to 10:01/10:02.

Agreed that the timeslot premiere is the real guide to the show's future. I'm expecting it to get big-time dinged.

Seeing as how TV watching in general was down 10%, I'd say we're in for a long couple of months before sweeps.

No Two and a Half Men repeats on CBS summer schedule. Mom and Friends with Better Lives have scheduled summer repeats, and The Crazy Ones doesn't.
But means nothing, because Thursday 9 PM is Big Brother hour, not that they scheduled some other repeats there.
Renewed or not, they can always air TAAHM repeats on Monday (FWBL has only handful of episodes), while TCO is dead anyway.

Ressurection may have saved him from being canned this year, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were him. David, there may be a job opening for you soon as President of ABC

@Spot,
By the way (it's unrelated, but I figured this was as good place as any to ask), where do you get the final half hour numbers? I am always looking for them but never get them after preliminaries. Also, probably related, but where do you get saturday finals? I never find them! Thanks a lot!

I think people are forgetting that ABC let Red Widow play its order in similarly awful circumstances last year.

Since The Millers is in house, it doesn't cost to repeat it. Same with a ton of other CBS stuff.

I wonder if HIMYM is repeating until Under the Dome premieres, or if it is done repeating on CBS for good. They repeated Rules of Engagemnt once last summer after the finale last year

I think After the Final Rose is the biggest ABC hour of the season behind the Shield pilot and the 1-hour Modern Family premiere. Hmm.

Spot said...

And tied with Resurrection after its double-uptick in finals!

I would give the edge to ATFR since it took fewer viewers to get that demo (implying that the show about dead people coming back to life skewed more towards elderly people), and it had a higher share.

Spot said...

Honestly, I feel the show deserves to end on a down note after that ***REDACTED*** reveal about the mother's fate.

Spot said...

Good prediction for spot, set the line at 2.65 and Believed earned a 2.7

Quite a drop for both A&E shows on cable, Voice is skewing older and I thought Mother would break a five for its series finale, now I'm leaning towards mid 4s.

Spot said...

Cancel.

Modern Family lead outs have higher expectations and it was the lowest rated ABC wed comedy.

Spot said...

The prognosis here is for how long ABC will keep it.

I bet they'll let it run for 3 more episodes, then replace it by Shark Tank reruns for 6 weeks like they did to The Assets.

HIMYM repeats aren't scheduled. Mondays are 2BG, FWBL, M&M, and Mom. However, if FWBL tanks, they can either slip 2.5 Men or HIMYM in. And of course the off chance Mom is dead (which is unlikely, but still), either can slip in as well.
