Renew (not confident). It really hasn't done anything yet to suggest a cancel, so I cannot go there even though I think it will be kind of awkward for ABC to have 5 returning weekday comedies next fall.

Ick. I kind of want to defer since it'll face The Voice tonight. But given that "2 weeks" have given us 4 data points, the spirit of the game to me says I should already have enough information.

Fresh off the Boat is a pleasant surprise for ABC, given the strong sampling on Wednesday and the high 1's it's pulled on Tuesday. It's definitely a plus for the network as it could help make a more competent Tuesday comedy block and free up a slot on Wednesday for something new in 2015-2016. But, again, FOTB needs to survive against The Voice this week and DST starting next week.

I don't think there's a vendetta. But Paul Lee is clearly willing to play hardball with outside studios. Last Man Standing was helped in that ABC really wanted Cristela, after its testing results exceeded expectations, and Fresh off the Boat. It's similar to how Sony leveraged The Blacklist into pickups for Community and Welcome to the Family in 2013-2014 on NBC.

I should probably do like Chris L and wait to see how FOTB does against the Voice tonight but... I'm going with Renew (not confident)

If The Voice and/or DST would affect Fresh Off the Boat ratings a lot, is there are possibility ABC would renew it as a 13 episodes spackle? It wouldn't be unprecedented, Bitch from Apt 23 got short Season 2.
After not having no backup for Selfie or Manhattan Love Story failures this season, maybe ABC would like to have some returning comedy as a backup. They had it in Suburgatory two seasons ago (it was 13 episodes order, though it was 3rd season).

Just a thought.

I think it would be unprecedented to have such a young show as backup though. I don't recall that ever happening before (Someone can correct me if I am wrong though). Those backups like Suburgatory, Community, Mike and Molly, etc all had at least two full season in the can when placed in filler duty I believe. I think it would be too much to expect a show with 13 episodes to have developed enough of a loyal following to stick with it in spackle duty whenever it gets back to the schedule after a presumably long hiatus.

But I do agree that giving it only a 13 initial order for Season 2 would be a nice idea.

Renew (Confident). FOTB will probably fall against The Voice, but I think it will have enough ratings to be renewal material. Perhaps ABC will move it to Cristela slot or have a short Suburgatory-esque season to fill up any slot if a rookie comedy fails.

Not entirely confident but I want to take a bit of a risk and it could be something to pair with Black-ish next season?

This feels like a 70-30 proposition, which translates to a reluctant Renew (Confident).

Don't Trust the B got the 13 episode order because it came on so late in its first season that ABC didn't want to commit to a full season knowing that they were going to move it from the post-ModFam slot.

My preference is to put it on the Fall schedule if it's renewed. But I understand the spackle argument; a Fresh off the Boat | Suburgatory pairing wouldn't have been a bad one tonally. It comes down to whatever ABC decides to do with its Wednesday sitcoms. If none of them move, FOTB needs to be on the schedule to give a sitcom the best launchpad on Tuesday. If black-ish moves to Tuesday, it's a coin flip: minimize risk and introduce only one new show later in the night or test black-ish's power as a lead-in. If The Middle or The Goldbergs move to Tuesday, keep FOTB as a midseason show to fill-in whichever :30 patch needs it.

Yeah, it would be unorthodox to order 13 episodes.
But I thought maybe as a combination of multiple factors:
1. ABC might feel regret for not having enough backups this season.
2. None of current Wednesday comedies are suitable for backup role, they need 22+ episode because are/will be syndicated.
3. It allows them to try two rookies in fall (Tue 8:30 and Wed 9:30) with risk minimized knowing on they have on the bench FOTB capable to score solid ratings.e

Normally no, but in this special circumstances maybe.

It has the numbers, just not the place on the schedule.

Your logic makes sense. My gut just says that ABC shouldn't launch anything new opposite The Voice, NCIS, The Flash, and probably Scream Queens. That's why I really like the idea of a diversity comedy block.

The only way Fresh off the Boat definitely makes it on the Fall schedule is if they go aggressive and do a 2 hour diversity comedy block (black-ish | Fresh off the Boat | Dr. Ken | ??? | SHIELD). But that feels very unlikely unless their comedy pilots really test through the roof.
