Spotted Ratings, Monday 7/28/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Another season of The Bachelorette (2.0 finale, 2.1 After the Final Rose) is in the books, and this one didn't seem to attract the franchise's usual huge heat late in the season. The finale was at season high levels, but up just two tenths week-to-week and 23% behind last year's finale.
  • NBC premiered Running Wild with Bear Grylls (1.4) at 8/7c, and it went just below last year's 1.5 premiere for Bear Grylls effort Get Out Alive. Considering that show aired at 9/8c after American Ninja Warrior while this one was leading off, NBC will take it. And Running Wild was a major improvement on the usual 8/7c repeats NBC's been running, which helped produce a new season high for increasingly hot American Ninja Warrior (2.0).
  • Hotel Hell (1.6) solidified its renewal case by inching up in week two.

I think FOX should have simply done the obvious thing and paired the Gordon Ramsey shows together from the beginning while giving Gang Related the post 24 slot. I don't think 24 benefited from the Masterchef lead-in, it likely had a build in audience all along and there are clearly synergies here from airing Hotel Hell with Masterchef.

Also, very positive night for NBC. Both NBC and FOX had incredible nights, very impressive for summer

While it is not exactly a novel concept, I think American Ninja Warrior in benefiting from being unlike anything else on TV. There are tons of reality singing and cooking shows, which is why Rising Star and the Taste aren't taking off for ABC. It also is probably being helped by the crumbling of Under the Dome

Nice to see Hotel Hell jump a tenth from last week. Hopefully its renewed and returns next summer, not summer 2016!

Wipeout really was a 2 hour episode. It was the annual Blind Date episode. If ABC wanted to keep it as one episode they should have pushed Rising Star back an hour.
But wow... Wipeout lost 43% of its audience in 2 weeks!

+1. I still don't really understand why Rising Star isn't in the 10:00 hour to start with. It puts the show closer to primetime on the West Coast. I would have done an AFV (r) / Wipeout / Whodunnit? / Rising Star lineup this summer had the faux-murder mystery show been renewed (I also would have retooled it to become more comical).
