Spotted Ratings, Wednesday 7/23/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • The Wednesday original debut of America's Got Talent (2.4) went below the 2.8 Wednesday debut from last year, though that was two weeks earlier on the calendar; it tied the 52-weeks-ago airing on 7/24/13 and also tied this week's Tuesday airing.
  • That lead-in injection pumped up Taxi Brooklyn (1.0), but only back to its premiere number and no higher. For now, that's lower than what The Night Shift was getting even when it aired after Got Talent repeats. The more relevant comparison for Taxi's fate may be last year's Camp, which had a 1.0 on this night last year and settled at 0.9 in the back half of its season.
  • If there was one show on another network hurt by Talent's arrival as competition, it was definitely Extant (1.1), down a brutal four tenths to more than cancel out its overachieving hold from last week. Motive (0.6) also took a hit at 10/9c opposite a stronger Taxi. The unscripted competition ironically fared best, with So You Think You Can Dance (1.1) and Big Brother (2.3) each on the upswing.

Anyone want to speculate at what number Extant gets pulled? I'm saying a .9

Always hard to judge the success of acqusitions and international co-productions. I'm not sure NBC will consider Taxi Brooklyn a failure even at this level.

Well, CBS is still airing Reckless and that's getting sub-repeat-of-anything ratings. I can't see Extant falling that low so I think they'll air the rest no matter what.

Great. Thanks a lot.

The full season is apparently already in the can so I don't think CBS would pull it this season even if it went lower than . Of course, in the highly unlikely event it headed toward CW repeat territory than yes, it would be pulled. It is looking highly unlikely for a second season at this early point in its debut summer season. Overall, I very surprised Extant is rating so low, even though I haven't watched it beyond its debut episode. I was planning on binge viewing the remaining episodes. Maybe a lot of other viewers are, too.

I'm believe that binge theory if it had had a major drop off in week 2. But it was week three. I'm just wondering if they are really going to waste the Survivor premiere on the finale of Extant

Not that it'd do better, but I'd have the Chicago PD repeats after America's Got Talent just to give the show some extra exposure. I thought Taxi Brooklyn would at least get to low-end The Night Shift levels.

Kudos to SYTYCD for not dropping below a 1.x against the increased competition. And ABC's repeats continue to do decent business.

ABC repeats are up double digits year to year. The Goldbergs and extra Middle repeat > Suburgatory and the Neighbors.
.
I absolutley agree about Chicago PD! They can just replace the PD rerun on Sunday
with a Fire rerun

While the bottom of the hour comedies are certainly a big help in that growth, isn't Modern Family also up quite a lot? I don't think it used to repeat this strongly. Could be wrong though.

I really doubt they keep the Extant finale where it is. I think the most likely option is that they do one less double eviction on Big Brother (or add up a returning player) hence allowing it to end a week later. Premiere Wednesday would then Survivor + Big Brother in some variable combination of times.

It's up 30% y2y. But the comedies around it are up 50% and 43% y2y. I know having an extra Middle repeat is incentive enough for me to watch the whole block and not just the Middle, especially since Criminal Minds is repeating elsewhere.
.
But ABC kinda screwed it all up last summer airing the cancelled comedies through June and then throwing repeats of Suburgatory and the Neighbors on after 3 and 4 months off the air respectively. Then pulling the Suburgatory repeats after a few weeks for LMS repeats.

Considering Reckless ratings, only for the finale since it is already on premiere week.

I can see them doing a 2-hour finale for Under the Dome too, if it goes to premiere week, they are on serious danger of finishing third at 10 PM with a worse rating than Hostages, even with ABC airing Forever instead of Castle. It may get even worse if Scorpion has a poor retention from TBBT.

Spot, numbers in tables "Put 'em All Together" and 22003-06: Strangely Steady" slightly differ.
Perhaps you added some previously missing data, and then one table was refreshed, while the other one wasn't?

Spot said...

Yes, all of the "Put 'em All Together" tables were updated with the new numbers but the texts below were not. I said this in the intro to the 2001-02 and 2002-03 numbers but probably should put the notice on every post. I'll try to do that this weekend.
