Spotted Ratings, Sunday 7/13/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • ABC Sunday was on the upswing, thanks mostly to a huge lead-in from the World Cup Final in the late afternoon. This effect was evident in the huge 0.6 spike week-to-week from America's Funniest Home Videos at 7:00, and it got smaller as the night wore on with Wipeout (up 0.3, but still hitting its highest rating in the last two summers) and Rising Star (up 0.1).
  • CBS got another very good Big Brother result, up 0.3 week-to-week and slightly up vs. the same week last year. The Unforgettable/Reckless switch put two tenths into Unforgettable and took one from Reckless, a trade-off that CBS will happily take.
  • On cable:
    • FX dove into a crowded Sunday fray that it's generally avoided in recent years, and it had a good start with new vampire drama The Strain (1.2). This tied TNT's The Last Ship as the biggest scripted premiere on cable this summer and was a fair bit stronger than recent FX premieres like The Bridge (0.9), Fargo (0.8) and Tyrant (0.6).
    • Elsewhere, The Last Ship (1.0) stayed in the ones for a fourth straight week. And Lifetime's Devious Maids (0.8) finished out a largely rough sophomore season with a new season high; it may have helped its renewal case in the last couple weeks.

I'm surprised that ABC didn't have a 2 hour Wipeout here instead of wasting the World Cup lead-in on an AFV rerun. Either way, Wipeout is making a strong case for another season by staying even year to year against Big Brother.

Where I live (Central Time Zone) my ABC affiliate aired news between the World Cup and AFV, so it wasn't a direct lead in here

The core idea still holds, similar to how Jimmy Kimmel Live's Thursday ratings were much higher than other days of the week when Scandal was on even though it wasn't directly leading into the talker.

It would be interesting to see ABC airing Rising Star right after the game like a "mini superbowl" lead in. The show is already supposed to be live anyways. Might have helped with exposure

Had FIFA scheduled the World Cup Final game closer to primetime in the US, perhaps ABC would have slotted the premiere of Rising Star on July 13 to directly follow it. And since the affiliates were already running national programming, it probably would not have been an issue preempting shows; the west coast primetime proper feeds could have been reruns (which would have lead to funny adjustments in final nationals).

Really wish Salem's ratings were higher so we could know them :(

I don't have every single week but it got a 0.2 almost every week in the second half of the season.

Thanks for that information, it helps a lot. It's a shame it didn't do better, but at least it got renewed. I can't seem to find the May 11, May 18 and June 1 A18-49s either, only the viewers. I'm guessing 0.2 for them all?

13 dramas aired at Sunday, out if which 8 at 10 PM. Thus, I think The Strain and The Last Ship both did really well.

1.71 True Blood (9:00) (HBO)
1.18 The Strain (10:00) (FX)
1.02 The Last Ship (9:00) (TNT)
0.87 Unforgettable (9:00) (CBS)
0.79 Falling Skies (10:00) (TNT)
0.79 Devious Maids (10:00) (Lifetime)
0.66 The Leftovers (10:00) (HBO)
0.55 Reckless (10:00) (CBS)
0.55 Witches of East End (9:00) (Lifetime)
0.37 Ray Donovan (9:00) (Showtime)
0.32 Masters of Sex (10:00) (Showtime)

unknown, so probably embarassing bad:
Halt & Catch Fire (10:00) (AMC)
Salem (10:00) (WGN)
