Schedules Plus, ABC Friday

Schedules Plus is another innovative application of the historical ratings statistic A18-49+. I hope this will be the ultimate resource for comparing the evolution of shows, networks and timeslots over time, complete with ratings numbers that make a fair adjustment for the collective decline. Right now this only includes programs aired in the fall. Much more about the process that went into this at the bottom.

ABC Friday features the return and fall of TGIF, the rise of Shark Tank and a new TGIF, and the lean years in between.

2014-15 Update: ABC's already dominant Friday lineup made even more strides in 2014-15, as leadoff comedy Last Man Standing and reality centerpiece Shark Tank both held up swimmingly once again. In the middle was new comedy Cristela, which found itself in the same position as Forever on the drama side: a significant improvement on the very weak previous timeslot occupant, but still squeezed out because of the network's numerous successes elsewhere. ABC will take yet another stab at 8:30 with Ken Jeong's Dr. Ken.

Notable midseason replacements:
  • One of the aforementioned shows tied as biggest on Friday in A18-49+ is the results shows of the winter 2006 edition of Dancing with the Stars (90). It was paired with one-and-done drama In Justice (55).
  • Shark Tank has been in midseason mode for most of its run to date: its Friday episodes averaged a 54 in 2009-10, 51 in 2010-11 and 68 in 2011-12.
ABC's initial fall schedule in 2007 had 20/20 airing at 8:00 and Men in Trees at 10:00; the shows were flipped after just three weeks, so I went with the second sked.
