Spotted Ratings, Monday 3/2/15

WHAT MATTERS:
  • FINALS UPDATE: The Voice (3.9) was up a tenth. Of significance to some, The Following remained at 1.6.
  • The third-season premiere of The Following (1.6) was down 20% from the timeslot premiere last year. For now, this was a bit of an improvement on recent episodes of Sleepy Hollow (which last got this high about two months ago). But it had a good situation with CBS in repeats and an original lead-in from Gotham (2.0), which is now heading to hiatus for over a month. Gotham, meanwhile, gave back a big chunk of its huge rally over the last couple weeks.
  • Week two for NBC saw continued strength in the first two hours with The Voice (3.8) and continued disaster at 10/9c with The Night Shift (1.4). Both shows took a small week-to-week drop but were up in total viewership, perhaps due to the lessened CBS competition.
  • CBS' Mike and Molly (2.2) tied its season high despite being the network's only original. Its lead-in was not that much worse than usual as CBS plugged in a repeat The Big Bang Theory (1.8) at 8:00.
  • And ABC encored the first hour of Secrets and Lies (1.0) after The Bachelor (2.4 at 9:30).

TNS half hours: 1.7/1.1

Just... Terrible.

Spot said...

I'm guessing The Voice overrunning is inflating the first half hour, but that is bad

Spot said...

Don't you adjust down on me the following!

Spot said...

Embarrassing, should've never been taken off the Summer, NBC just keeps on failing.

Spot said...

Even with the Voice inflation, a 1.7 is really bad with that lead in.

Spot said...

Please adjust down The Following.

Those games are evil.

Spot said...

Just to add extra drama, the half-hours are 1.6/1.5!

Spot said...

Yeah, I saw it too, it was the first thing I went checking when I saw the number eheh. By the way, you used your witchcraft techniques again, yet another spot on prediction (no pun intended)!

Bobby's world crashes and burns even more week after week.

Other than Night Shift's total disaster, good for Mike and Molly and meh for Fox. Between Sleepy Hollow and The Following, which one would you choose? It seems like this is their pity renewal competition.

Spot said...

Barring adjustments, I picked the Following on the nose. Awesome

Spot said...

Ahah they truly are.

Spot said...

Sleepy Hollow. Kevin Bacon needs to get paid

Spot said...

Probably Sleepy Hollow but they must give it 24 episodes or more if possible. They need to make syndication achievable or else is just throwing bad money after bad money. As for the following, it depends on where it settles obviously, this level is still okay for FOX but it won't hold.

The amount that CBS is rerunning The Big Bang Theory is incredible this season. It makes financial sense considering how much they are paying Warner Bros. for 3 seasons of the show, but it's absurd; it's going to have more reruns than original episodes by season's end thanks to the regularly scheduled repeat at 9:00.

On a related note, I thought that 2 Broke Girls & Mike and Molly had their episode orders synced up. Guess not if M&M had a new episode tonight. I don't understand why CBS didn't decide to double-pump M&M at the end of the season instead of closing up shop early in May Sweeps like usual to avoid a situation like this. At least it clearly didn't faze the veteran sitcom at all.

If NBC is going to give a face-saving renewal to The Mysteries of Laura, then they should shift The Night Shift out of here and give it a whirl here. I would suggest an out-and-out timeslot swap, but considering The Night Shift is pulling mid 1's here with the strongest lead-in NBC has, the drama would surely sink with a local programming lead-in that's way worse and against solid-at-worst competition (The Middle & The Goldbergs, Survivor, American Idol, Arrow) on Wednesdays.

Surprised that ABC didn't go the 3-hour Bachelor route again, but I guess they wanted extra sampling for Secrets and Lies. That would have made more sense if the premiere weren't 2 episodes.

1.5, here we go! *hopeful*

In regards to the CBS comedies, TV Line is reporting that CBS ordered just 22 episodes of 2 Broke Girls instead of the usual 24. Before yesterday, 2BG had a 2 episode lead over MM which would make the episode orders synced if it had 24 episodes and MM just 22. But since both have 22, MM was still 2 episodes short. It will still have to air one more time with repeats.

New shows are usually repeated, no surprise there. HTGAWM was repeated over the break, Forever has been promoted and even gotten a 3 episode in 1 night repeat marathon, etc. So this is no surprise, AC will probably also get it too.

Spot said...

I seriously doubt ABC will bother repeating Agent Carter now that it is over. Why would they?

Spot said...

No, I meant American Crime after it premieres. XD.

Sorry, I should've clarified.

Spot said...

If I have to pick one, Sleepy Hollow if only because 20th Century Fox produces it. The network and studio need to take the show, though, and have it follow the Once Upon a Time/Grey's Anatomy/Scandal route of split-seasons within the year. There aren't big household names attached to it a la Kevin Bacon so they can more easily convince the producers and stars to get more episodes made per year.

Spot said...

Ah sorry, of course, that makes more sense. I hadn't realized there were two ABC freshman dramas with the same initials!

Spot said...

Yeah, like I said, I should've clarified.

Spot said...

I don't get why FOX is scheduling Mondays this way. There are 4 (!!!) original Gotham episodes left to air until May and it is only the first Monday of March!

I think Sleepy Hollow should have gotten a two hour finale and The Following a two hour premiere. Those would be 2 additional solid hours of Gotham to air later on. They probably should have also aired one extra Sleepy Hollow in January to force it to end two weeks earlier.

The way they've scheduled they have too many originals to air in the 9pm hour without time to air them all (the following will end up airing the summer) and not enough originals to air in the 8pm hour until the end of the season, which is pretty poor scheduling.

Spot said...

I kind of doubt NBC will renew it back for summer after this debacle.

Spot said...

I get that new shows are repeated early to get sampling, but by airing two episodes on Sunday and only reairing one last night how much did it really help with expanding reach since viewers will have missed the other ep?

As for Forever's rerun marathon, that was on an end-of-year night when the only original content was the Kennedy Center Honors. I'm just surprised that ABC didn't try for the third hour and the easy win at 10:00.

Spot said...

Just move it already and prep another show (Aquarius? Odyssey?) to take its spot while The Voice is still high. The Night Shift ain't going nowhere, except maybe for next year's Summer season... =|

Spot said...

Yes, both ABC and CBS scheduling is strange.
ABC: After seeing Secrets & Lies pilot is repeated yesterday, I expected they will repeat episode #2 tonight at 10 PM. No, Forever is airing tonight, and #2 won't be repeated at all. Not before #3 airs, which makes no sense.
CBS: They aired Mike & Molly through holidays, presumably to sync it with 2 Broke Girls. And now it's like they're saying: "Oops, we miscounted it.".

Spot said...

They'll probably air the next episode next time it's repeated. I think the 2 hour premiere was mostly for scheduling reasons especially since it got switched with AC that got the Thursday slot.

As for Forever, it's still a new show being repeated and it was over the long break.

Spot said...

Yeah, that would make more sense than Gotham's long hiatus for the final 4 episodes.

Spot said...

It's a Sony show, right? So maybe A&E/TBS/Yahoo!/whatever will pick it up to drag it to syndication too. xD

Spot said...

I agree that it would make much more sense to preempt Forever tonight to repeat Secrets and Lies than to preempt it next week for a repeat of itself. Strange.

But there is nothing wrong with CBS I think, they needed yesterday's original and they will need another original somewhere to sync it with 2BG. Because 2BG has 22 and not 24 episodes this year according to TVLine.

Spot said...

It hasn't been announced yet, but it's a near certainty that Fox is going to launch MasterChef on Mondays again and is going to start that in May to give it a few weeks of Sweeps action to help juice the numbers before American Ninja Warrior and The Bachelorette come on the scene. I do expect a 2-hour The Following run or two at some point, though, since I don't think they want the show to experience a summer run.

Spot said...

Yes, that is true. I have a "rule" of not expecting a Sony show to be gone after it has more than one season. Not sure if TNS qualifies though considering it will have less than 22 episodes at season's end. But it's possible!

Spot said...

But in the case of Mike and Molly, there are better solutions. CBS could have double-pumped the show tonight, or any Monday that's not April 6 (the NCAA Championship game) between now and the end of May sweeps. Or, since they are so fond of being un-CBS-like with scheduling, throw a random new episode on Thursdays instead of a TBBT rerun.

Instead CBS made M&M an original island among a sea of repeats.
