Spotted Ratings, Thursday 6/19/14, 6/26/14 & 7/3/14

Apparently I didn't get to the 6/19 post before vacation, so some of this is really old news! But anyway...

WHAT MATTERS:
  • After a relatively steady return for Rookie Blue (1.1), down just a tenth year-to-year, it dipped to 0.9 in week two, tying its series low and well below episode #2 of last season. And NY Med (0.9) came back on 6/26 at 25% behind the 1.2 with which it began its last season in 2012.
  • NBC couldn't muster up a post-NBA Finals rally for its comedy-themed night, as Undateable was flat on 6/19, ticked down on 6/26 and again for the three 7/3 episodes. Purely on merit, I would not totally count this show out; it had comparable numbers to NBC's dramas from last summer, and those shows had far better situations. But given the burn-offish way NBC initially scheduled it, plus the uninspiring week-to-week trend, I would guess NBC is not going to be swayed all the way to a renewal by these results.
    • And after a massive drop on 6/26 (to a number below the repeat from three days earlier), Last Comic Standing strangely got back a tenth on much lower-viewed 7/3, even though it was apparently a clip show...?
  • Big Brother had a good start on 6/26 but took the largest week-to-week hit (30%!) of any broadcast series on lower-viewed 7/3. Because the last couple eps have come on viewing-depressed nights, it's not entirely clear where the show is at right now, but this Wednesday and Thursday should be informative.

I think the 8 pm Monday repeat is hurting LCS. I keep on missing it on Thursdays and catching it on Monday instead. NBC has made it really easy to lower prioritize first run viewing. Same with AGT. I've seen parts of a bunch of repeats, but I don't think I've actually watched it as a first run this year.

Anyone else think that CBS should bump the Elementary rerun on Thursdays and slot in something like 2 Broke Girls & Mom? We've seen that the Eye's drama brand is wildly incompatible with Big Brother (good luck to Extant), and I doubt that sitcoms would do any worse at 10:00 p.m. Why not schedule repeats of a show that skews younger (2 Broke Girls) and to potentially increase sampling (Mom)?

I agree completely, but no way CBS does it. They own Elementary amd repeats are free to them while they have a limit of 2BG and Mom repeats. It makes sense to go Mom (R) and 2 Broke Girls (R). 2 Brokes Girls got 10.7 worth of exposure on opening night, but Mom's best lead in ever was a 2.8 on premiere night. CBS could easily cancel Reckless, moved Unforgettable up an hour and plug Elementary (R) on Sundays at 10

I agree. I don't understand why NBC isn't simply doing America's Ninja Warrior/ Blacklist (R) on Mondays. It would make more sense on all levels.

Spot said...

I agree with that idea. But I also think there's no way CBS does it. I think they probably aim at replacing the hour next year. It's the only post Big Brother hour without an original program right now and clearly one where there is room for it.

To be honest, I think they would have been better suited holding something like Bad Teacher to the summer and trying to make it work there instead of making it look like a burn-off the way they did. A post BB lead-in for something like Bad Teacher probably wouldn't have been a bad idea. Even Friends with Better Lives could have gotten that treatment too. Either BB or TBBT(R) could have worked as decent lead-ins and I don't think it's impossible to launch a comedy in the summer.

Spot said...

That's what I've been saying ever since the summer started. NBC should've put Blacklist(R) after American Ninja Warrior to get it more of an audience, since it's still a first season show people can catch up.

Usually a network can rerun the current season of a broadcast show as much as they want. Syndication deals may limit using prior season eps. But even if there's a cap it's not as if CBS reran 2 Broke Girls and Mom to death during the regular season, unlike The Big Bang Theory, so there's enough room to double-pump the shows 2 nights a week until Thursday Night Football starts.

Spot said...

So do you think the CW's comedy initiative has any chance?

Spot said...

No, network is usually limited to 2 repeats by contract.
But that's almost never problem, rarely there's example (like The Big Bang Theory you mentioned), where they come even close to that limit.

Spot said...

I think it's almost impossible that Whose Line Is It Anyway respects that limit. Maybe the conditions aren't the same there?

Spot said...

NBC should pull the monday reruns of LCS to give exposure to Blacklist while Elementary reruns should be pulled for anything, even CSI (now out of CBS programming) or NCIS reruns.

Spot said...

Probably.
Each show's contract may be different case, of course. But as far as I know, networks usually pay for 3 airings, original + max. 2 repeats.

The CW is always its own beast, I am not sure it would be representative of much. Besides, its comedy attempt is basically made of cheap imports as far as I understand, so the feel there would be pretty much the same as the NBC block they will have on Thursdays this week onwards. I think a block of Friends with Better Lives and Bad Teacher leading out of, say, Big Brother (especially considering those two were, together with 2 Broke Girls, probably the "raunchiest" CBS comedies, which would make them a better fit with BB) would flow nicely and look like a serious attempt.

Maybe it's just my impression but I always feel that in the summer, if networks don't try hard, it won't really work for the most part. Sure, Rookie Blue and stuff has been renewed and been around for a while, but its ratings are simply passable as filler. Last year CBS went big with Dome and it worked. This year they went burn off feeling with Reckless and it didn't. I think that sort of dooms it to begin with. A serious comedy attempt would need to avoid this feeling. Obviously, part of this is a self fulling prophecy because if networks didn't invest as much in the product they won't promote it as much (probably because it's also not very good to begin with), so the audience will be limited to begin with... But still.

The CW is at least doing some things right with Backpackers and Seed: sandwiching them between Whose Line on a night that's higher-viewed but somehow has less intimidating competition. I'd rather face the weaker hour of The Bachelorette, MasterChef, and American Ninja Warrior than young-skewing Big Brother, big-tent America's Got Talent, and ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars on the other nights.

Do I think these shows will move the needle to get The CW fully back into comedy? No. I'm just hoping they don't out-and-out bomb so the netlet will at least keep trying but more effort (and money) behind the format.
