Spotted Ratings, Thursday 2/27/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • After suffering through a couple miserable premieres over the past few days, it was finally ABC's turn for some good news as their strong Thursday duo returned from 2.5 months off in very healthy form. Scandal (3.4) was up two tenths from its fall finale and Grey's Anatomy (3.1) saw an even bigger bounce, perhaps benefiting from Rake (0.8) providing even less competition than Glee did back in the fall.
  • If ABC was overdue for some good news, NBC was also overdue for some bad. And as usual, the Thursday lineup obliged. Community (1.0), Parks and Recreation (1.0) and Parenthood (1.1) all hit/nearly hit season lows, and Hollywood Game Night (1.2) caught the Thursday disease too in dipping below all its Monday episodes from the winter. (It was only ahead of the Christmas special in December.) Still, at least Game Night was a much better option than the yanked Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show...
  • CBS' flip of Two and a Half Men (2.5) to 9/8c and The Crazy Ones (1.9) to 9:30 paid immediate dividends, as the former handily outrated TCO's recent 9:00 norm and had a major surge vs. its recent results. And The Crazy Ones didn't even really suffer at 9:30, as its lead-in from Men was only barely weaker than what it had usually gotten from The Millers.
  • History's strong drama Vikings (1.3) returned for season two at a number well below last year's inflated series premiere (2.0) but pretty much in line with what it did for the rest of season one.

I'm assuming Parenthood is done after this season, and it should be given the numbers. My hope is we get some sort of ending though.

Hollywood Game Night outrating way more expensive shows... thank God NBC is not in 2009 anymore or they would try to strip this too. :D

GA surprised me. Good for them.

Anyone want to set an over/under on the time that Fox quietly announces this afternoon that Rake is being removed from the schedule effective immediately and is replaced with fill-in-the-blank?

I should have figured that the absence of Glee would only help Grey's, and in retrospect am not surprised I lost that Question. Expect Kitchen Nightmares to air in that slot next week.

Scandal beats Modern Family. Wowww. (Although I imagine MF is still Truly a couple of ticks clear, as it has half the lead-in.)

2:17, Kitchen Nightmares.

Well, I was pretty far off on Grey's and Scandal. That makes me 0-fer-3 this week. Greaaat. It appears that ABC's strategy paid off, though, as now they have a strong Thursday until May sweeps. They just need to find a better bridge show for January and February next year.

I sincerely wonder why CBS put TCO at 9PM. Having two newbies back-to-back like that never made much sense.

FOX could simply flip Idol and Rake (or replace it. The point is move Idol to 9). They can avoid The Big Bang Theory and the worst affects of Daylight savings time. They can still make it a half hour for Surviving Jack. Idol has to face the much weaker Men and and Jack can face Crazy Ones over Millers.

I remember when Deal or No Deal was on three or four times a week. It was awful, and I liked the show!

Modern Family not only is now the #2 show on ABC this week, but is now the #3 comedy this week. HIMYM beat it. I think the only other time that has happened this year was losing to the jumbo sized Simpsons after the wildcard game

Spot said...

They put it in The Office's old timeslot hoping that former Office viewers would tune in.

Spot said...

What do you put on at 8 then?

Spot said...

Nice idea. But that's not an option, because Rake is already down to 0.8. I mean, Enlisted/Raising Hope combo would surely do better on Thursday than it. I'd say this is last time we heard about Rake.

But maybe Kitchen Nightmares at 8 PM and Idol at 9? If they're not too proud to admit defeat.

Spot said...

Maybe they can bring it back along with Heroes. lol

Actually, I think it can be successful again if they ever revive it. Then TBL could rest for some time too.

Ever since they released their Fall schedule, I wondering WTF the hit show was doing as a bridge between an unproven-and-not-so-compatible newbie and a solid-but-no-so-strong sophomore. Maybe they were aiming to improve Elementary's ratings, I don't know. :S

IMO, Two and a Half Men should've been at 9 since the start of the season.

Vikings returned below most of last season's episodes.
So unless I'm wrong that still leaves just 5 scripted cable shows at 1.5 averages: zombies, vampires, dragons (among other throne-gaming plays), bikers, and witches (among other horrors), yes?

Spot said...

Well, they've done everything imaginable to strengthen Elementary in that slot, up to and including a post-Super Bowl episode. They probably legitimately thought TCO was a worthy anchor too, and it may even have been a late audible after NBC plonked MJF at 9:30 back when that could legitimately have been projected to be a hit (NBC's upfront was Monday, CBS's was midweek).

A DoND revival kept getting floated by the game show fandom. People forget just how badly the final season rated, and the show seems to have faded in most international markets. (The exception of its native Netherlands arguably proves the rule: the DoND section is merely an extended bonus round with the first half of the show devoted to an audience-participation elimination quiz to determine the contestant - in fact, the quiz predates the DoND endgame, which was introduced upon the transition to the euro in 2002 - and the show airs in two chunks of 5-6 weeks each year. Interestingly, ABC piloted the show with the quiz in 2004, when they were obviously looking for the next Millionaire - were it not for *that* development season shortly afterwards, they might have regretted deciding not to pick it up.)

I disagree. Vikings was definitely in line w/ most of the episodes that didn't have The Bible backing it up, as I recall its ratings history.

Spot said...

Factually, you can't "disagree." It was below the ratings of 7/9 previous episodes.
If I said it was "disappointing," you could disagree. But I didn't. I stated a fact that is correct.

Spot said...

And maybe dowagers. But we don't have PBS A18-49 data. They only revealed Season 4 averaged 8.3 million viewers So if it skews 77% old, that would be 1.5. But I always suspected it skews very old, like more than 80%.

Spot said...

Oh I actually found one 18-49 data point! http://tv.yahoo.com/news/ratings-downton-abbey-second-only-super-bowl-194321301.html
That would put you exactly right, if the demo % is super stable - 77% were outside the demo. Though technically PBS isn't cable.

Spot said...

Factually speaking, it could very well be ahead of as many as six episodes, something we don't know yet since Spot hasn't posted the number out to the hundredth.
