The Question, Thursday 2/27/14: Will Grey's Anatomy and Scandal Get the Bad Taste Out of ABC's Mouth?

At the 2013 upfront, ABC announced that several of its serialized dramas would go on an extended hiatus, allowing for long original runs without interruption. They didn't fully follow through on this (Nashville and Revenge both came back in January), but they stuck with the plan with their strong Thursday duo. And while The Taste was surely an inexpensive way to get through the hiatus, it couldn't have been that much fun seeing it get slaughtered in the ratings each Friday morning. Now, Thursday order is restored, as Grey's Anatomy and Scandal are back, promising to put ABC on the Thursday map for the first time since the new year. Will Grey's Anatomy and Scandal get the bad taste out of ABC's mouth? That's The Question for Thursday, February 27, 2014.

Grey's Anatomy Fall 2013 Scandal Fall 2013
3.4 (premiere, 9/26/13)
2.81 (average)
2.7 (fall finale, 12/12/13)
3.6 (premiere, 10/3/13)
3.06 (average)
3.2 (fall finale, 12/12/13)

First instinct says the shows will come back about even with the fall finale numbers. ABC's weak returns on Wednesday aren't a promising sign, but the one show that's actually been getting numbers for ABC over the last few weeks (The Bachelor) is also the one show that probably shares a lot of audience with the women 18-34-leaning Grey's/Scandal pair. So a lot of these shows' promos have been seen.

Grey's Anatomy PLUS Scandal Over/Under: 5.85.

I think they'll each be a tick or two below their fall finales, so under.

Grey's: 2.6
Scandal: 2.9

5.5 and Under

Under.

I have no idea. But I like round numbers, so I'll say 2.5 + 30 = 5.5.
Of course, tomorrow I'll learn fall finales left some huge cliffhangers, and therefore tonight's ratings went through the roof.

Nobody watched ABC between december-february and despite both shows (plus Modern Family) being the only network hits (Castle, OUAT and SHIELD are solid, but they are a step below), so:

Grey's 2.6 + Scandal 3.0 = 5.6 and under.

Grey's is usually pretty good about returning up in January and last year in January was when Scandal really became a solid performer. I'm going to be optimistic, over!

I don't think Scandal ended the fall run on too big a cliffhanger so I'm going to guess it returns down a tick at a 3.0. Say that Grey's returns even and we get a total of 5.7, under.

Grey's-2.9
Scandal-3.2

Over.

Boy, tough line. I'm gonna say they're both in line w/their previous averages... which equals a 5.87... so, by juuust a hair, OVER

Spot said...

Grey's-2.8
Scandal-3.2

6.0. Over.

Spot said...

Shot in the dark: UNDER.

The Wednesday collapse makes this easy. Under.

I think there are fine arguments to be made either way. I've tended to say Over in these situations, but I'm still really surprised from last night. UNDER

Spot said...

Greys (2.6) + Scandal (3.2) = 5.8. Under.

I'd say over, but after the debacles that have happened every day post-Olympic so far for the alphabet, I'm going under.

Uhhhhhh over? I feel like knowing what the plotlines are currently would help, but not knowing this, and seeing very weak competition I'll be blindly optimistic.

First time posting here and I say under. It seems like barely anyone watch ABC during the winter and knew their shows were coming back

Spot said...

Under! I hope they both overachieve but I find that line very very high

Spot said...

Over.

Grey’s Anatomy “Take It Back” (ABC) A18-49: 2.8

Scandal “Ride, Sally, Ride” (ABC) A18-49: 3.2

TOTAL = 6.0

I'll guess "over."
