Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 7/23/13

  • Last Tuesday's biggest story Whose Line Is It Anyway? held up splendidly in week two, down just a tick from the original in the 8:00 timeslot last week. The second and final Tuesday edition of Perfect Score was also down a tick. Its next original airs on August 9 alongside the Top Model premiere.
  • America's Got Talent also had a good week, rising by 12% in its first live episode. The year-to-year comparisons are somewhat unfair because Talent was a few weeks deeper into the season at this time last year, but even a fairer comparison (corresponding episodes) has seen the trend improve of late.
  • USA's Covert Affairs (0.8) made a nice recovery after premiering weakly last Tuesday.

Whose Line repeated very well too. The CW must be delighted. I'd guess it's more expensive than a typical unscripted CW show, due to cast salaries and format costs, but a fraction of the cost of a scripted show.

It'll be interesting to see how The CW schedule the show going forward. It would take an awful lot of restraint to hold it until next summer. My guess is that they will repeat it on Friday after ANTM ends with new episodes turning up in spring and airing into summer, but I'd forgive them for bringing it back earlier.

My hope is that they fast-track a half-hour companion comedy, whether scripted or unscripted, to go with Whose Line. An adaptation of Dan Patterson's other unscripted British hit, the panel show Mock the Week, perhaps?

I think the problem with Improv-A-Ganza was that GSN wasn't in a position to market the show, especially without the Whose Line brand.
