Spotted Ratings, Monday 7/15/13

WHAT MATTERS:
  • Week four of Under the Dome was the CBS hit's first steady episode-to-episode result.
  • NBC saw a two-tick drop in week two from Get Out Alive, and it brought increasingly awful-rated Siberia down another notch with it. ABC's Mistresses also hit a series low.
  • ESPN was the top network for the whole night with baseball's Home Run Derby (2.6), which finished just a tick shy of Dome for top program overall. The Derby was down a tick from last year.

We've seen summer breakout unscripted hits aplenty in the last decade and a bit (Idol, DWTS, Survivor, probably others I can't think of right now), but not a summer breakout *scripted* hit.

Let's face it, only CBS could possibly have even considered trying it to any meaningful extent, much less pulling it off. Their record with anything unscripted not called Big Brother in the summer, combined with their scripted-heavy in-season lineup (repeats of which they lean on far too heavily in the summer, although in fairness their lack of serials really helps), meant that they were in position to give a promising drama (one I'd have given a chance in the fall with the presold concept!) a summer run.

If the 24 reboot storms out of the gate too, I don't think ABC/NBC will be left with any option but to genuinely take the year-round programming memo far more seriously, and by that I mean scripted shows that could work in the fall.
