Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 6/17/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • An early end to the NBA Finals meant ABC dropped 81% week-to-week. However, this was of no help to the only network really trying on this night; NBC's America's Got Talent (2.6) was flat and The Night Shift (1.3) actually dropped two tenths after a steady first three weeks.
  • ABC aired an original Extreme Weight Loss (0.8) to very low results; it probably got hurt to some degree by program guide confusion (as many listings still indicated an if-necessary NBA game). And Fox made marginal improvement by pulling its reality bombs in favor of comedy repeats, though most of that came from Family Guy in the opening half-hour.
  • TNT brought back Rizzoli and Isles (1.0), down considerably from last summer's 1.4 premiere, and Perception (0.7), down less considerably from last year's 0.8.

I think the second half of the season is the perfect thing to air in Thursdays during the hiatus of the Shonda dramas come midseason. It won't do anything spectacularly but it will be reliable and probably and spare them the investment than a new thing would demand. I would do Reality/Astronaut Wives Club/Rookie Blue there.

I figured that Rookie Blue must be very cheap for ABC. Then again, rerunning its serialized shows like Grey's Anatomy or Scandal would do worse; I'd rather spend a little money to gain a few ticks and have the appearance of keeping the lights on. Plus ABC's summer-fare is usually in the same tight mediocre range so it'd have to be a big disappointment to get canned.

The super-sized season 5 order is a bit surprising; my best guess why it happened is either the show is a hit in Canada or it's a way to avoid renegotiating with the actors for a season "six" (since it sounds like its Canadian network is also this go-around in a split-season fashion).

This does kind of beg the question if specialized labels a la Fridays should be formulated for summer shows since viewing levels are different this time of year. But cost is probably a bigger factor here than the September-May season; it makes me wonder how cheap is Sony making Unforgettable for CBS given the show barely crested a 1.x average last summer.

I agree about the summer-specific labels. I'm hoping to get to that by the end of this summer.

Cool! Looking forward to it! Although I wish you good luck trying to fit Season 1 of Under the Dome in them!

Summer megahit maybe?

I like that idea, but that 1.0 it had for the premiere doesn't put it too far ahead of the Taste

To be fair, I don't think the taste did as bad as people were claiming. The goal was for it to improve on repeats of GA and Scandal at lower cost and I think it managed to do so, even at it 1.0ish level. Plus, it was facing a still quite strong American Idol and The Olympics (and in some weeks, the big bang theory), so I think its ratings were acceptable.

I do think ABC could aim for a stronger-than-repeats performance for their winter filler stuff, but I think they should phase it out. I would like them to see attacking one hour strongly, with something like Astronaut Wives Club, which seems to be very on brand for them and have potential, but I still would go for low-cost, relatively safe and risk-free options on the other hours surrounding git.
