Spotted Ratings, Tuesday 2/4/14

WHAT MATTERS:
  • As usual, the post-Super Bowl exposure was meaningless to the lead-outs in their regular slots. But this might have been even more disappointing than usual, as New Girl (1.6) and the 9:30 debut of Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.4) were significantly down from their last originals. (Worth noting that those last 1.9's came against basically no competition; they were on par with the episodes before that.) The real winner on Fox was probably Dads (1.5), which held onto its recent against-no-competition 1.5 level despite the returns of NCIS (3.1) and Agents of SHIELD (2.2). This may well end up being better than what Glee does here later in the season.
  • On a nearly all-original night, almost everything else was pretty steady. Perhaps Tuesday's weirdest result was a major spike for CBS' NCIS: Los Angeles, though it was tempered just a bit in finals. And NBC wrapped up The Biggest Loser's season (2.2) at 19% behind the 2013 finale number, though this was the first time since the new year that TBL has cracked the 2's.

No crossover. But they did do a story about a Blackwater expy trying to cover up war crimes by murdering people stateside.

Loser>Shield.
Dads to be renewed?
I expected NG/B99 to get exactly 1.9s again, and they did somewhat worse, hmm; the third time in 4 years that the SB didn't help its lead-out at all.

Dads are dead, and New Girl is certain renewal. But Brooklyn Nine-Nine ... not good. Stronger (though less compatible) lead-in and Super Bowl exposure resulted in usual mid 1's rating. Meanwhile, Mindy W18-34 ratings had been at 2.0+ in 2 of 3 January episodes (1.93 average during those 3, something like 2.05 for the season).
For the first time since the series-low 1.4 in 3rd episode I see B99 as likely cancelled. Not dead yet - ratings aren't awful, so Fox might renew it simply to avoid negative PR for cancelling Golden Globe winner. And it could also survive if Mindy totally collapses during its last batch of episodes in April/May. But is not looking good.

Maybe the Super Bowl boost only works for series or season premieres. Undercover Boss and Voice were pretty strong after their SB lead-outs.

If that was true, then Grey's Anatomy would still be on Sundays...

I get NG being a certain renewal. It will have 72 (or so) episodes come May. Dads being dead? Seems a bit premature, especially since B99 was usually within a tick or two of it. Plus, we don't know how powerful the Seth MacFarlane Factor is, nor do we know what the Sunday line-up will look like once Cosmos leaves.

Fox cut episodes order for Dads, season finale ... sorry, series finale is in February, and show's ratings are 4th out of 4 their not-so-well doing sitcoms. Dads is cancelled.

I was pretty down on FOX airing New Girl after the Superbowl as I thought launching the Following would be more beneficial, but seeing as it has fallen apart this year, even with the NFC boost, I can't think of any show they could have aired that would have seen a huge boost. I now wish they'd just have gone Simpsons/Family Guy or Bob's Burgers. Just because it would be cool to see Simpsons ratings after the Superbowl in '99, '05, and '14

Feels just like Almost Human to me. Discounted too early, and the "better option" (Following, B99) isn't proving to be so. Unless Glee perks them up *snicker*, FOX comedies could be in the low-1s come spring.

And they still have a locked-in full season of New Girl to come!

The only silver lining is they skew so young that they're more valuable than they look. But even so...

I wouldn't agree it's the same case.
Dads are 4th on the totem pole of 4 not-animated Fox comedies. They need to premiere some new comedies in fall = Dads are dead.
While I don't think Almost Human is completely dead. AH would be dead if it remained in mid 1's, but if it can somehow continue its streak of good ratings, then Fox might change their stance. I'm sure they won't considered it for fall with 3 dramas already renewed and 4 new ordered, but there exists chance it's renewed for summer or as a backup player. It's a long shot, because AH really cannot allow ratings drop, and Fox scheduled it against Olympics and The Voice. But that great 2.0 and 1.9 from last two episodes were unlikely too.
