War of 18-49 Update, Modern Family (2013-14)

Let's take a look at the 2013-14 season (the fifth overall) of Modern Family on ABC.

Rating the Ratings: Modern Family had another very big season, but it continued its slow descent from its 2011-12 zenith. This might be considered a mild disappointment considering the show got heavy syndication exposure this season, and the Wednesday landscape softened a bit with the singing shows' declines on Fox. The good news for Modern Family was that it trended better in the second half of the season. The premiere was down 24% and the season down 20% as of the end of 2013, but the gap was cut to -16% by season's end. It held up uncommonly well through March and April, then had only a couple bad points (April 30 and May 6) before regaining some heat in the last two wedding-themed episodes. The finale being even year-to-year is a somewhat inflated trend, but its decent second half and some more promising companions could bode well for 2014-15. Grade: C+.

Here's the now updated War of 18-49 post for Modern Family.

I would go with a B- (I think I will always judge them less harshly than you lol). You penalized Castle so much for the fact that it was down during the second half of the season, while MF had the exact opposite trend that I feel it deserves a bit of an upgrade there. Besides, I feel the show was hurt a bit by the unsuccessful Wednesday night landscape. Back in the Game, Super Fun Night and Mixology were all duds like no others that have been on Wednesdays as far as I remember (correct me if I am wrong) and I feel that has hurt Modern a little.

Modern Family had a tough season with crappy lead ins and lead outs. But I have a feeling since it will have The Goldbergs as a lead in and an actual family comedy as a lead out, and with more syndication exposure, it will do better next season.

It's 3rd season has certainly helped by a growing out of the Middle Suburgatory as its lead in and buzzy Happy Endings and Revenge as lead outs

The Middle/Suburgatory/Modern Family/Happy Endings/Revenge was one of the best lineups I've ever seen. If only they kept it that way....

I agree with this 100%. I do feel that even anchor shows get hurt when they are surrounded by duds. I felt the same was happening with New Girl last year (even though its collapse this year might suggest otherwise) and definitely with Modern Family this year.

Likewise, I feel that there is a certain phenomenum that when you throw out duds together in a surrender night or so, the combination of the duds creates an even greater "dudism" than the usual sum of parts would lead you to expect. I felt that way about ABC Tuesdays (DWTS/Happy Endings/Apartment 23/Private Practice) last year, about CW Mondays (Hart of Dixie/ Beauty and the Beast) this year and last year (90210/ Gossip Girl) and NBC Thursdays this year (Parks/Welcome to the Family/Sean/Michael J.Fox and Parenthood), just to give some examples.
