The War of 18-49, All American

Beginning on the Bubble

In fall 2018, the CW gave the lead-in for one of its hottest shows, Riverdale, to another teen drama called All American. On premiere night, the choice looked very underwhelming; All American premiered with just a .19 in the demo, holding less than half of its Riverdale lead-in (0.53). Things perked up quickly from there; after another .19 in week two, it grew to a .25 and .31 the next couple weeks, and held onto 0.3's for a few more weeks before dropping to high 0.2's at the end of the fall.

But the audience kept falling away after the new year, putting it back south of 0.20 by February. All American was looking like the weakest of the network's three fall drama launches (Charmed and Legacies) and a borderline renewal decision. It actually missed out on the CW's usual round of early renewals and came down to the wire, but it squeaked out a renewal on reports of strong streaming performance.

The Meteoric Rise

In most cases, the 'strong streaming' reports fail to materialize in the Nielsen ratings. But with All American, the impact was very real. Boldly sent off to anchor Monday night, All American returned in the fall and matched its raw series high of 0.31 on premiere night. It fell to 0.24 in week two, but it hung in the high-0.2's for most of the rest of the season, then had some low 0.3's in a strong run late in the season. It was a highly successful sophomore season, topping season one in raw numbers and coasting to renewal much more easily.

Due to COVID-related production delays, All American didn't air for roughly ten months after the season two finale, but it came back in January 2021 with a huge bang. The 0.39 season three premiere blew away the previous series high, and it had several more weeks at 0.3 going forward. It fell off in the second half of the season, in part because it was forced to air deep into the summer, but it still eked out a second straight positive season in raw numbers. It had been a bubble show with a 0.22 average in 2018-19, but with a 0.24 in 2020-21, it was now the highest-rated show on the network.

The growth was done by season four, as All American premiered with a 0.23 and quickly dropped to low-0.2's and even some high-0.1's later in the season. It looks like it's not going to make it to Riverdale's heights in Plus. However, it squeaked out a second straight season as the network's biggest series in Live+SD, and it's done something else that Riverdale couldn't: launch a respectable-rated spin-off in All American: Homecoming. The All American duo will air together on Monday night in fall 2022.

The War of 18-49, FBI

Dick Wolf Comes to CBS

When FBI premiered in fall 2018, it had been a decade since the Tuesday post-NCIS timeslot had gone to anything other than an NCIS spin-off (Los Angeles, New Orleans) or a series featuring a major NCIS lead (Bull). But CBS was willing to give the showcase to Dick Wolf, who had created multiple huge procedural franchises at NBC (Law & Order, Chicago).

Like the Chicago-verse, FBI had somewhat humble beginnings. It started with a 1.3 after NCIS' 1.4, but it was down to 1.0 by week three and frequently lost more than 20% of the NCIS lead-in. In the end, season one certainly did well enough to get renewed, but it had worse retention than the previous occupants. In season two, FBI grew a bit in Plus, but so did NCIS, so it wasn't clear that it was picking up much steam.

Taking Over Tuesday

The dynamic changed somewhat in season three, as NCIS fell off again but FBI kept growing. Its post-NCIS retention was better than 90% that season, and that inspired CBS to make an even bigger bet on the series. It had already launched a spin-off, FBI: Most Wanted, in the 10/9c hour, but for fall 2021 CBS moved FBI to 8/7c and launched another spin-off (FBI: International). That bet also paid off, as FBI looked stronger than ever in the lead-off role. It matched what NCIS had done in Plus the previous season while NCIS went off to create massive improvement on Monday night. The FBI night became a huge part of CBS shoring up its schedule, and will return intact for 2022-23.

The War of 18-49, The Conners

Roseanne Without Roseanne

Of all the revivals that have been trotted out on broadcast TV in recent years, none hit bigger out of the gate than the spring 2018 premiere of Roseanne, one of the biggest TV ratings moments of the entire decade. Bringing it back for the 2018-19 season was a no-brainer, but things got really complicated when series lead Roseanne Barr became embroiled in controversy. What ended up coming out of that was The Conners, dropping Barr from the cast. A decline from the enormous heights of the Roseanne revival was probably inevitable with or without Barr, but The Conners still hit it relatively big out of the gate, launching to a 2.4 demo (well within megahit territory). It fell pretty hard in week two to a 1.7, actually inched up to a 1.8 in week three, but then dropped again to 1.5 in week four. From there, it was pretty steady at borderline-big hit levels, making it one of the biggest new comedies of the A18-49+ era (even if the 'new' distinction was a bit complicated here).

The Conners held onto the Tuesday 8/7c slot in season two, and while it couldn't come close to the megahit heights of the premiere, the year-to-year declines became much more manageable later in the fall. A big part of the year-to-year decline in season two simply resulted from the show having a much longer season (20 episodes vs. 11 for season one). Like many other series, it was probably rescued from new lows in the spring by the COVID lockdowns in 2020, but it seemed pretty stable before that.

Off to Wednesday

With Modern Family off the schedule, ABC looked to consolidate its family comedies alongside The Goldbergs on Wednesday, moving The Conners into the old Modern slot at 9/8c. It appeared to hold up OK initially, premiering with a 0.9 in October 2020, but things got rough pretty quickly. It fell all the way to 0.6 by the end of the fall and pretty much stayed there after the new year, making for year-to-year trends that were even worse than season two. It was still strong enough to renew, but a big hit from just two years earlier finished the season below the league average.

As ugly as the comedy night got in 2020-21, the 2021-22 season at least provided some hope that the anchors had found their bottom; The Conners was even in Plus and The Goldbergs bounced back a bit. In 2022-23, ABC will once again bring a Tuesday anchor (buzzy sophomore Abbott Elementary) over to Wednesday, and The Conners and The Goldbergs will join up in the 8/7c hour with The Conners leading off.
