The Breakdown: Fox Monday in 2021-22 (9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, The Cleaning Lady and more!)

It's time for a journey through the Fox Monday schedule in 2021-22...

Fox was happy to have 9-1-1 back on the air in the fall after it got delayed all the way to mid-January in the COVID-hampered 2020-21 season. This lineup grew massively year-to-year as expected vs. last year's filler, but unfortunately 9-1-1 itself had to deliver 100% of that growth. New drama The Big Leap was an epic fail in the 9:00 hour, only matching what last year's leftover Filthy Rich did with almost three times the lead-in.

9-1-1: Lone Star took over at 8/7c during the mothership's hiatus, the same way the two were scheduled two years ago (and will be again next season). It got paired with another new drama called The Cleaning Lady. The show was looking quite promising in its first month but trickled down to more moderate levels by the end of the winter. However, even its late-season deliveries were a huge improvement vs. The Big Leap.

The spring saw the 9-1-1's reunited for the first apples-to-apples comparisons of the season, and their y2y trends basically matched the trends for the full season: down roughly 10% in Plus.

9-1-1: The 9-1-1 franchise may finally be on the way down, as both the mothership and the spin-off were down around 10% in 2021-22. The trend probably warrants a C but I'm being a little kinder because 9-1-1 is still a very strong program and within the tight range of the first four seasons (all five have ranked between 144 and 169). May not be as generous if it falls out of that range next year. Grade: C+.

9-1-1: Lone Star: Unlike last year, this show didn't get a full season alongside the mothership, and it was fine leading off the night in the winter. But airing at 8/7c after local programming probably isn't much of a downgrade, as the trend didn't really change when they were reunited in the spring. Grade: C+.

The Big Leap: As I mentioned last year with Filthy Rich, Fox actually has a pretty long history of huge flops in this timeslot with roughly the same Plus, dating back to stuff like K-Ville, Justice and The Mob Doctor. The Big Leap had a way bigger lead-in than most of those shows, and especially bigger than Filthy Rich, so if I gave Filthy a D- then my hands are pretty much tied here. I would still say the biggest flop of them all was the two-and-through 2010 drama Lone Star, but Big Leap was easily disastrous enough to warrant a Grade: F.

The Cleaning Lady: At least in Live+SD this looked very similar to the winter episodes of season one of Prodigal Son from a couple years ago (also airing after a similar-rated 9-1-1: Lone Star), and certainly a breath of fresh air following the Big Leap debacle in the fall. It was tracking for an even better grade in January (hitting a series high 0.55 in week four) but tailed off into less impressive territory in the second half of its run. It will get to join the 9-1-1 mothership this fall. Grade: B-.
